This is a song from Paul wrote to Art (or Tom as he was called when thet started out together as a teenage duo called Tom and Jerry) when Art left the group to try his hand at acting (he was flying down to Mexico to film the movie Catch 22) - makes sense that Art stands at the back for this!

@michaelpoplett Not sure about that. Just from the perspective of their stage performances, Garfunkel often steps backs when doing backing vocals, Simon steps back when Garfunkel is singing lead. It make sense in this song particularly, the way they've organized it, i.e. focusing on Simon singing the lead and then lighting up (Garfunkel and the other musicians). These guys have been through so much together over a long period of time. They're clearly aware of each other's effectiveness.
