LOL Gibson is a Blues guitar, and Martin is a Bluegrass guitar. Gibson owners eat your heart out. Your Gibsons can't come close. Martin tore your Gibsons up while picking Blues.LOL
My dad had a 1963 D 28 w Brazilian back and sides he bought new. It is considered the Holy Grail of tonewoods. Not only is that a factor in the sound of this guitar but the long bridge saddle nonscalloped braces and bone nut saddle and bridge pins play a major role too. Not to mention the adirondack spruce top and 60 years of age! That's why they cost 20 grand if you can find them in this kind of shape too tho lol. Wonderful instrument!! Thanks so much for sharing
That is one lovely sounding Martin. A friend of mine once loaned me a 1955 D-28. What a gorgeous instrument. Regrettably it is not in as good of shape as this.
i can't decide between d28 or d18, the d28 is less bright than a d18, but more bassy. the d18 is more bright but less bassy.. i want a hybrid!!!! hahaha i'd porbs go with a d28 if i haadd to pick tho...idk it's like pickinga favorite child
Definitely the STANDARD right there. Very stunning D-28. The only way you can beat that sound is with a 40 series Martin because they are much more balanced then the 28's and 35's. My HD28 is a canon (2005) and so is my D-41 special (2004) and D-45 (2004). If you want the cadillac get a D-45 but play a few of them...truly the most balanced, deepest instrument out there.
@Bigsbeee I agree with you to a point....it would take a guitar with some age to beat a guitar with age. Don't get me wrong that is an AWESOME D-28 but when you play a 45 beside a 28 of the same era you can hear the difference. The tonewoods are much "better" on the 40's series Martins. The 28 will always be the standard and it just gets better from there. Also scalloped braces to me sound much better, more open. Just my thoughts :) Keep playing man, sounds great!!!
Dude, are you actually wearing a pocket protector with pens in it??? Seriously though, that's probably the best sounding old Martin I've ever heard. I have a 1953 D-28 with Englemann Spruce top that sounds pretty amazing too. Mine is much more beat up than yours though...Great picking!!!
I think those strings are brand spanking new....a lot of people love that fresh tinny sound...but you're doing the overall sound of the guitar a disservice if you want to show off the 'great sound' of your 50's D28....all I can hear is the brand spanking new strings you put on it. Now come on.....what does it really sound like?

Boy howdy, you've got yourself a keeper there, MK! That sound is why Martin is who they are. Everybody who buys a Martin thinks it sounds like that one. . . but only a small percentage of them really do. Hope you play it a lot--that one deserves to be played & heard! Martin's making some fine guitars now, no doubt, but you can't build in the seasoning that comes with age. . . what a sound!
You just don't find many people in life that regret buying their D-28s. I still love mine after 30 years, but a new set of strings and a good set up by a luthier will make most guitars sound a lot better. Guitar store super sounders lately for me:!!!! I found a Gibson J-45 that sounded like a dream. Love that full SJ 200 Gibson too. I found a CA grand Auditorium (Graphite) that stunned me with its sound . Really suprising deep bright sound., Taylor GS series guitar was SUPER!! Best I've heard.
oh and I was set on getting a martin d28 when I went to buy a new guitar because I already have another Gibson but the Songwriter deluxe from Gibson prevented me from buying a martin
the Songwriter was just to well balanced to pass up
i would have to disagree my d-28 is about the best acoustic i have ever owned or played and it is only a year old.martins just get better the older they get just a shame i wont be around in another 60 years to get the benefit ,
@heinzdziurowitz Go play A new HD28 or HD28V with the forward shifted X bracing...You can't get much better than that. Martin is putting out some GREAT stuff. I have an 08 HD28 and it is a cannon.
Wow rings like a bell. Beautiful sound.

@desr2395 Buy a D-23 then - see we can be helpful, they'll make it in the Custom Shop :o)
I have a D-28 with medium Elixirs on it and it's bright as a button. Good bass and treble. But nobody's opinion other than yours matters. Have fun.

@morgansibley
why would a 40 series beat that guitar..take something very special..maybe a well played 70's straight braced, Alpine topped D45.
Balanced = straight braces like this 1950 D28..most abalone Martins are scalloped.
Great sounding D28
