  • I, Partridge - track 2 !

  • I'd love to of been at that concert !!

  • I've still got this on 12"

  • Ok three things, I wouldn't send my worst enemy to hear what any shrink had to say and secondly, Gary Numan was ground breaking in 1979. Nobody was doing this type of stuff.

Thirdly, go to iTunes and sample the piano version of this song and I will bet you will say that it is among the most beautiful music you have heard. Yeah, he does look kind of "out there" in this video but that was the 80's man. Let me guess, you weren't born yet?

  • @mdboucher Totall agree about that piano version. It's gorgeous.

  • @mdboucher his look is amazing!

  • like if you were brought here by the foo fighters cover of this song!!!! :)

  • we are unworthy

  • Gary is the one and only !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This man was the god of electronic and futuristic sounds back in the early 80s and late 70s,i was crazy for his music and now 25 years on or more i still play his music..

  • well thats the yanks 4 ya... all mouth an no vision

  • @hasanrolf Your mouth IS our vision. Can you name even one palatable British dish?-no. How many times have you eaten at Kentucky Fried Chicken or McDonalds?(before you answer, I've been over there and it's ALL you greys eat) There isn't a single british eatery anywhere but Britain-no vision. The only brits that badmouth us are the ones who can't afford to move here.

  • Its so unfortunate that everyone in America who actually knows who he is only remembers him for cars

  • @TheShplaa I'm Canadian and was 12 when I first heard this and still get goosebumps.By the time "Cars" came I started to lose interest shortly after.I still love Gary and think he is amazing *-*

  • @TheShplaa Speak for yourself, I remember a LOT more than that!

  • Umm for the audiance of 1979 it was the music of the day, so no were weren't sitting in our mud huts wondering if aliens had landed! Gary Numan still IS a pioneer.. and he's still alive, touring and making music today!

  • I remember watching cable TV when it first took off here, in TN. Cinemax or The Movie Channel, or possibly HBO didn't have much to run, so the same movies would play daily. In 1980, I was about 6 and this film called "Times Square" was always on. I fell in love with it and it was made at a time when soundtracks were expected to do better than the movies themselves. This one had the Ramones, Roxy Music, Joe Jackson, Talking Heads, The Cure, and this gem by Gary Numan. Bought it on Vinyl, double

  • Wow all these years I thought he was just some nameless one hit wonder. Fuck the over marketed music industry for branding this guy unfairly. Have you seen how he's portrayed? It's the reason I've missed genius, and my stomach feels sick with guilt. I can hear the influence of David Bowie. I'm thankful Gary had such musical influences because the children of today have nothing, not a damn thing. A beaver, and the country of Cyprus, and all of these parasites from the ghetto aren't music.

  • @aaronscrewme YES!!!!! some content from the land of the aware!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for your realization, pass it on.

  • TeeHee Numan used to stalk David Sylvian, and accosted him once in a car park for COCOASHUNT. TeeHeeTeeHeeeeeeTeeeeHEEEEEIII!!! XoD

  • @ariesscorpiorising cocoashunt??

  • @saganemc2 Yeah, u know, buttinvasion. Gary used 2 stalk the band Japan, when they were on their last tour in the country Japan. Its a true story- VERY FUNNEEEEEIIII, look it up in google, I'm not even kidding. U cant make this shit up, Gary, yeah he's coooool and his music's BITCHIN, but honestly, what a DWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEBBB!!! TeeHEEEEEEEEIII!!!! XoD

  • the only live version of any song i like better than the original

  • @saganemc2 I also agree

  • 22 spores

  • Gary's got mad dancing skills.

  • absolutely sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 22 people have broken ears.

  • manson's single version is awful, but live version is the best i heared.

  • I love this song, Foo Fighters do a version of it on a bside, original is the best though, as always

  • I guess I was born too late.

  • This is on the (first) X-Files album, this is intense as good as the X-Files album version.

  • @PoserExposer awesome username!!!

  • He does make some Bowie-esque facial expressions(esque?)

  • Slow Metro?

  • Funny thing: the one Marilyn Manson song I liked turned out to be cover:-)

  • this guy is early ENO..make-up..music and all..how you get BOWIE out of this is beyond me..now, i'm not saying this is bad..i like it..but man let's call a spade a spade..he even looks like BRIAN ENO..

  • @801liveable But this guy is Gary Numan. GARY NUMAN

  • @kerstmanneke82 yeah, but if it wasn't for ENO, their would be no GARY NUMAN..same with ROXY MUSIC..no ROXY..no TALKING HEADS..no CARS..no RADIOHEAD..no DURAN DURAN..no ULTRAVOX..no BE BOP DELUXE..no DEPECHE MODE..no HUMAN LEAGUE....on and on we go...but i do like this song..

  • @801liveable dont you mean no kraftwerk no gary numan?

  • @RealMusicTV yeah, i can see KRAFTWERK, also..i guess they just slip my mind being such a big BRIAN ENO, fan...

  • hate mansons version all you want..but who covers gary numan? only the peeps that realize what good music was...come on..dont give shit to the wrong people..give it to the right people.

  • @Khongbiet1000.... Yeah I agree .. It's not bad but as in most cases ... Nothing can beat the original... To me that's a proven fact .. Look at all the BS movies that were re- made... I'll take the 70's& 80's versions better then the new .. Cars as well..

  • still crazy after all these years....

  • I think he looks like a better version of Alan from two and a half men. :)

  • I was fortunate to see Numan on this tour in Cleveland, OH. He was a great showman and the stage setup was crazy cool!

  • @MightyHickory It was a great show! Too bad the sound cut out partway through this song.

  • David Grohl ... If you ever heard of him ( Nirvana,Probot,Queens of the Stone Age,Foo Fighters) did a cover of this and it's not bad .. I believe it's on the new Foo Fighters album

  • @jayman6677 Thanks for the info fella.

    Just listened to it.

    It's ok,but lacks Gary's distinct melancholy.

    Original is the best.

    Thanks again.

  • I personally think that Manson's Down in the park does not have the same charm as this song. I do not like his version nearly as much, even though I am a manson fan.

  • he looks so awkward

  • @xcrunkxcorex thats what made these guys like him and dudes later into the 80s so interesting!

  • I cannot find a psyciatrist that can tell me why this is so good.

  • @ffejgib In a nutshell.....existential angst requited, reminscient nostalgia for real creative music (unlike music now), haunting and mesmeric synthesizer, which hits the amygdala just right, a feeling of acceptance and cameradeship in a dystopian world (unlike the everyday dystopian world), and a bit of Schadenfreude (it's fun to 'watch the humans try to run'), which is id gratification. I am hypnotically drawn to this tune also....so it must be a good functional defense mechanism. Cheers

  • Why is this giving me a boner?

  • @killmrmanson bad news, YOU'RE GAY !

  • @raptorjp4 bad news?

  • @deathtothemushroom Very Bad...

  • @raptorjp4 little homophobic are we?

  • @saganemc2 Nope, not accept gays, is not being homophobic :DDD use your little brain ;)

  • @raptorjp4 lol bad news? lol I'm gay and I don't regard it as bad news...

  • @RidingMad125 hahahahahah SHAME ON YOU GAY HAHAH LOL

  • @raptorjp4 Lol Go take a long walk, Keep walking until you find a big cliff and walk some more. Either that or go find a boyfriend and realize what you're missing big boy ;) x x x x x x x x x x x x x x

  • @RidingMad125 Okay... so if you're gay, everyone must be gay?? that's sooooo stupid, INSANE MIND....... YOUR BRAIN IS FUCKED, BYE GAY !!

  • @raptorjp4 Lol of course i don't think like that, Mind you can catch it from us!!! Bloody idiot

  • Christian Death had a good cover of this, it is almost as old as the original so not many people know it.

  • @Gazerich Sorry pal.I have to say CD's version is good.

Just Not As Good as the original.

Thanks for the heads up though.

  • Gary Numan is easily one of the best artists when it comes to ingenious lyrics that are also very dark. This man's song is a masterpiece of imagery, while still being highly connotative. That's probably why his music is so unique, and kick ass.

  • When I first heard Tubeway Army I loved it, when I first saw Blade runner I loved.

Critics hated both, how wrong they all were? Numan and Blade runner are now part of our everyday lives. Our friends are now most certainly electric.

  • When I first heard Tubeway Army I loved it, when I first saw Balde runner I loved.

Critics hated both, how wrong they all were? Numan and Blade runner are now part of our everyday lives. Our friends are now most certainly electric.

  • everyone just forgets about the steller cover done by the foo fighters?

  • The audience must have thought they were in 'Bladerunner" or something. When to 'The pleasure principles' concert he was touring in Auckland,NZ, about 3 weeks ago. So awesome. Very forward thinking artist. Well ahead of his time.

  • Gary was wayy ahead of his time ... If he made this album again with the same hits... It would be on the radio all day and then we'd get sick of it...

  • @Discle.... You make a grown man cry ....

  • im A Huge fan of Down In The Park of Numan

  • I love this song. And its proof of, if you're a good enough lyricist and songwriter, it doesn't matter how fucking tonedeaf you are, it's gonna work!

  • Foo Fighters version is pretty awesome too

  • What a COLD/ DARK place our PLANET would've been without all those UBER ANDROGYNOUS creatures that used to make the MOST fucking MIND-BLOWING music during the 80's ( the BEST fucking ERA in music EVER!!!...) and for some odd reason seemed to REPRODUCE "exclusively" in the "United Kingdom"!!!....

  • @petermurphreak A Man , Amen, brother ! YEAH! I LOVED his TELEKON...! :)Z

  • This is cool but Manson's is better. Well both are different :))

  • I'm in a fucking TRANCE looking at this SEXIER than FUCK demi-god/pseudo-alien MUSICALLY and VISUALLY BLOWING MY MIND out into another fucking DIMENSION!!!.. What a total MIND-FUCK this is!!!...

  • After her sings the last line, "a different faces but the words never change," he sings a line that is not in the original lyrics, but I can't make it out. Can anyone tell what that last line is exactly?

  • @Discle I can't quite figure that last line out, either. "You alive will make me cry?" I'm pretty sure it's "You (two syllables) will make me cry."

  • I hate to break it to you "Taliam86" but this is Gary Numan's song from the early 80's and Marilyn Manson did a cover of it many years later.

  • That guy sure does love triangles...

  • @Taliam86 - You *do* realize that this version came first, and that both Manson and the Foo Fighters have done covers of it? Next time maybe you do a little research before you spout off a bunch of insulting nonsense.

  • He's my hero, I play my Roland SH101 and pretend I'm Numan I don't care what my American friends think.

  • sexay

  • Why the hell is manson being compared to numan just cause he copied down in the park.Of course he could never recreate talent because hes a talentless psycho satin worshipper trying to be an artist.Get the hell off this page and go talk about your manson love somewhere else!

  • @crjdemte couldn't have said it better myself

  • 2:42 :-)

  • I was there...........this was E P I C!!!! GN was the leader of the pack....and when you met him, as I did :-D, a really nice bloke, who seemed a little bit in awe at what he'd created

  • I was there...........this was E P I C!!!! GN was the leader of the pack....and when you met him, as I did :-D a really nice bloke

  • Early Gary Numan and real early Human League Rule.

  • Rumour has it that in a Spinal Tap-esque balls up, the stage dominating pyramids came a bit short of the mark...

  • If you known this before, Manson cover sound lame. GN is the MAN

  • 21 people went outside when the rape machine _wasn't_ looking the other way

  • For the audience in 1979 this show must have been very very modern & futuristic. Gary Numan was a pioneer.

  • @kzbxvz It was, trust me.

  • @kzbxvz its still modern and futuristic to me in 2011 because music is just now starting to take sound as this, In my opinion atleast.

  • @kzbxvz It still is futuristic and modern..and actual people played the instruments, not a computer.

  • @kzbxvz it still is

  • @kzbxvz It isn't futurism, rather it's cyberpunk. Numan is drawing on artists like JG Ballard and playing with scifi imagery.

  • @shirehorse91 It's Numan, plain and simple. Let's not insult with genre specific classifications. I am a Numan snob because I CAN be, he allows me through his body of work.

  • @saganemc2 I'm referring to his motivation. No one is being insulted.

  • i love Down In The Park of Numan , i hate Down In The Park of Manson

  • @240SX77 mansons is ok but he is no numan

  • @240SX77 Manson is a poser of Alice Cooper.. Numan is unappreciated.

  • @240SX77 Manson is a poser!

  • @240SX77 I like the Manson version because that's what led me to discover the real one.

  • where is the button for epic? Sounds like fu**in Kraftwerk Blues!!

  • I still think he should have quit making his own songs and joined Frank Zappa's backing band. The world would be WTfuck

  • Gary Numan and spinning gay Pyramids. Lol I like him but that is a cheesy stage complete with spinning gay pyramids. at least these pyramids coulda helped his career a little but, no they just spinned around w/o a care

  • @espinozafn It's not like the pyramid was gonna or even should turn into rape machine right on the stage, am I right or am I wrong?

  • gary numan is a great song writer but not much of a vocalist marilyn manson is a better vocalist and musician he has worked with trent resnor which is where a lot of his musical talent comes from not to say his pre resnor stuff isnt awesome its just not as dynamic. also the statement that the foofighters version is better than mansons is fucking retarded mansons version is way better and darker manson really captured the depravity of this song in a way that even numan couldnt

  • @EvolvedHuman fuck off idiot. manson is a shit vocalist, i can say that and ive been a manson fan since 1998.

hes great but a shit vocalist.

  • my dad listen to him when i was like 3.... im 34 now and still love some of his stuff... cars is what most people know of him.. very cool

  • He's so unbelievably badass. I love Numan, I think he's brilliant.

  • @MrWhitneytraylor . Well, when he and Iggy Pop went to Berlin to get "cleaned up" that year, being there influenced his style like on the albums and photographs at that time, you can see it.I think it influenced a lot of the new wave bands image.Mike Score from A Flock Of Seagulls would admit to it.

  • Christian Death covered this as well as MM. I have always enjoy this version best. Gary took a rather unusual instrument (the Minimoog) and managed to pioneer electronic music as we know it. My hat is off to him.

  • just my option....im a child of the 90s not the 80s soo that may be one BIG reason...

  • @TinkerStinkersDaddy Are you kidding? Gary Numan is a legend, Marilyn Manson's version is annoying

  • @JohnnyLovely2 yeah lol! youre right ... this is better way better than Marylyn Mansons version.. I like the Foo Fighters Version though but nothing beats the original..

  • @TinkerStinkersDaddy Marilyn what ?

Only Gary Numan´s Down in the park is the real one, the better one !

  • He reminds me of Bowie during his Berlin era circa 1977.

  • @1ssjesus yeahh you're right !!!

  • Gary Numan rocks!!

  • Gary Numan kicks so much ass. He's the godfather of industrial music and an inspiration to many.

  • Your thru to the next round..

    Mint.

  • I really like this song I first herd it when Manson did a cover <3

  • Go on gazza

  • omg this singer is alan from two and a half men :D

  • TRON

  • LOVE this song.

  • wwwaaaayyyyyy ahead of his time..

  • a true original just like bowie makes modern music seem so stale and corporate

  • @DICKENS81 Exactly.

  • I was down in the park with a sweet youg boy.

  • Gary has been a lifelong inspiration for me. Love this live performance!

  • Gary's a really strange chap. wonder if he attended the riots the other day in London.

  • oh look there's america still the baddest mother fuckers on the face of the earth but without hardly any soul left only an older fuck like me can look back and thank god he's a marine and give thanks that he's a child of the 80's

  • oh look there's a rape machine il go outside if it looks the other way!

  • How can you say anyone done this justice and compare (re-visits) this is a "Tubeway Army" song & so it will remain

  • You can watch the humans try to run....

  • no way is this guy human, he's a machine

  • ahh. the days when music was played with one finger...

  • How can you even attempt to call this emo. It sounds nothing like Bobby Vinton

  • so freakin cool !!!!!

  • Girls Under Glass are the only ones who did this song any justice, the only way a great EBM band could.

  • Just spellbinding is all I can say

  • Gary has actual swagger in this footage. But what I want to know is if he still has that today?

  • @jrmetmoi not really, now he just does moody evil, i find it annoying

  • @fuckamericanidiot But he still looks hot doing moody evil. He has great legs and a tight round ass. Now those are NOT annoying! LOL

  • Wow this guy had some hidden sexiness? What happened to that man? The way he moves at 1:48, the Cars video does not show any of that. And now I can finally see what people were saying about Gary being a Bowie clone, yet so many people tried to be Bowie though back in the day so what was the big day.

Bowie influenced most of the freaks. Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, Bowie, and certain others influenced the freaks.

  • Calling this emo or goth is like calling E.A.Poe either. Those are labels slapped on tweener lifestyle options one may obtain in complete sets at the mall--music, clothes, makeup, books--probably all at one shop to better aid the obese 12 year old who hates his parents, on whose credit card it is all being purchased. This guy was creating music like this when there was no label for it. At least give him credit for what your generation sorely lacks: originality and creativity.

  • @nauort23 This certainly is NOT emo or goth, it was slapped the title of new wave or avant guard in the same vein as klaus nomi who was popular with david bowie a few years prior. I was born when tubeway army made their first album and a year old when I was very aware of this song and liked it even at that age. There is a resurgence of an audience for Gary because of his appearance and being mentioned on the Mighty Boosh. I miss real synthesizers that the 70's was all about. Today's sound muted

  • imagine what it felt like to hear this music in 1979... in context with what was being played at that time. Blew me away, and I will never forget !!

  • I love that he dances.

  • @400batman LOL, WTF, the foo fighters are shit compared to a pioneer like numan.

  • Just saw him on his Pleasure Principles tour, this song is great live! :D

  • He reminds me of a new wave Neil Young...

    Love it!!
