The degradation can also be defined as a regression back to point time zero: the point of a person's birth. And also the elimination of universally applicable empirical self-consciousness: the knowledge that all of mankind can have in common gathered through their senses. Then "art" became the pinnacle antithesis of what art should be. To simply paint a picture of some "thing" never "seen" before, show "it" to the "child" mind: which had regressed back to point time zero, and watch them react.
In 1480 Leonardo da Vinci produced the world's first, and only, visual musical equivalent. This is what enabled art to acquire the title of "Art." This visual music contains a mathematical syntax. Experiencing of this syntax requires a developed cognitive capability. a prerequisite to this is a person's ability to cognize "space." We can actually "see" this ability degenerating from 1480 to 1880, with the introduction of Picasso, and the elimination of "intelligence" in and of "Art."
@MrMikeludo I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I couldn't agree with you more, people like him degrades and demeans true artistry and talent. it's a shame that some lawbreaking drug addict with no talent whatsoever be given such honors. even one of his quotes was " believe it or not I cam really draw" what an insult.

Basquiat's paintings look like shit, I would only let him scribble over my paintings if I knew it was going to make me some serious cash by selling it to rich fucking-idiots.
@illustriouschin art does not have to be pretty, it does not have to look like something you recognize, it is not about any of that elementary stuff, it is about seeing it and feeling connected to the piece, some do not get it or like it and that is cool, everything is not for everyone but the intelligent response is not to discount it but to just say it does not speak to you and not display ignorance by calling people idiots, it makes you seem like one.
@kimmyrabb I could eat off one of his paintings which means I can use it as a plate which means it has a use besides just being art which makes them not art. And yes, not only do rich idiots exist, but rich fucking-idiots exist, I don't have to sugar coat it because I do not fear the rich fucking-idiots even if they sent their own personal hit squad to come kill me, it doesn't make them smarter.
@kimmyrabb I beg to differ, I believe when people express an opinion as to what is considered artistic or not, does not mean they're not "connecting" it simply means that they don't think something should be called art. I like some of his strong color conbinations and compositions, but I don't think he was particularly talented. most art critics are a bunch of self-proclaimed visionaries, but I think most are clueless. so, talent does matter to some of us, peace
@Choosilicious please dont even attempt to call lady gaga unique or special as that amazing guy in the video. honestly lady gaga tries to be a collaboration of all the unique artists out there.. WHICH IS A FLOP.
@wiggin2 Gaga is not unique, she just isn't. I am old enough to remember artist that were far more unique and they had the nerve to have to be that way in America when the society was WAY MORE conservative and when being very political, out of the closet, dressing in the strangest ways could end your career so it was much more dangerous back then, now it is just show-biz, not that big of a deal. I have seen it before and I have seen it done better but the kids think she is new, she is not

People have to stop justifying the scribbles of this junkie, as notable artwork. Basquiat is a joke. "Amateurish", would be a compliment. It's the worst of the worst. It's juvenile. And it, generally, only appeals to the smallest minority of the populace, whom can relate to him racially and economically. God, his stuff was bad, and not only in the sense of opinions. He was a man who's only novelty came in emulating typical toddler art, one can find scattered on a refrigerator.
The worst even is that the minorities that are supposed to get any ^benefit^ from his work, from his ideas, wont ever understand his work, not even the people who buys it, is all about the critics and is all in the name of money, if one artist do work like this and want to be SERIOUS, he cannot accept money. then... that would be a nice start.
Reminds me of the story of the Emperor's New Clothes, like so much of Modern Art. Amazing that supposedly sophisticated, intelligent collectors could fork over millions for this rubbish.
People: I have criticized art for some time. I have looked and looked, but have found no deep artistic talent among any works of Basquiat's. This is hyper modernism run amok, praise worthy only to those idealists who value the political fashionability (poor, black, street) of the artist, over the art. If you can duplicate a piece in a matter of moments, it is probably not art. This is the worst/best example of the depraved devolution of art. I have to say it - Basquiat's work is a joke.
I'm sure the drugs didn't help, but he had legitimate health problems that caused that. When he was a kid he got hit by a car, causing internal injuries and having his spleen removed. I believe his skin was predicted to get even worse over time.
Abstract art is bullshit, so easy a 3 year old could do it and get labeled as a genius. Nothing but random shapes and colors that abstract art critiques mark as Masterpieces, and as a result the public gets a predetermined bias when actually viewing said pieces, that's how abstract artists become famous from a bunch of clueless sheep. Basquiat couldn't draw worth shit all he did was throw paint at a blank canvas like a damn caveman he had no more artistic skill then a toddler.
I never said that everyone that makes abstract art makes millions, there is a fat chance that you would actually be able to pull something like that off, you just have to be in the right place at the right time and have the right person see your work. It's a coincidence that Basquiat became famous. Have anyone make some abstract crap and it's probably not going to become famous unless some noteworthy clueless art critic or gallery owner labels it so.
@SupremeCommander360 If you knew your art history, you'd know that this "coincidence" you speak of is applicable to every artist. Is it not a coincidence in the first place that art is so esteemed so as to allow artists to make so much money? What art isn't abstract? Art is simply a representation of a signifier. That in itself is immensely abstract. Why don't you just leave art alone and reside in your world of perpetual meaning.
@SupremeCommander360 it was the idiosyncratic feelings he instilled into his work and that was felt by those who viewed it that made his work so special.
he just had a special style that many people saw as vibrant and 'cutting edge' and a lot of people ended up taking notice of it because he knew the right people to show it to and the rest is history as they say...
@SupremeCommander360 actually the general public commonly has the sort of reaction you have. i think you've got it all wrong. as far as everything else you have said i don't even know where to begin. its like the teabagger videos; all i can do is shake my head in disgust.
Could someone confirm whether or not the kid in Gil Scott Heron's video for 'The Bottle' is a young Basquiat? I've found no mention of it anywhere but it looks so much look him! I've done a bit of research and he would have been just the right age for the boy too in 1972 when the video was made- in New York too! Kid comes in at 27 seconds!
Warhol mocked popular images and commercialism, but he became as greedy as any businessman. Basquiat was totally original and anyone who only sees childish doodeling in his artwork...doesn't own an imagination.
his work is not childish at all, but that doesnt have anything to do with the fact that most of it is crap, with a nice random idea thrown in. I go for Soutine anyday.
i thought andy warhol was a singer for some reason. this jean - michal Basquiat(?) dude is horrible. i stopped at :42 seconds and i literally said outloud "thats fucking horrible".
@xMy3Dx art is what ever you want it to be. I love Warhol, Basquiat, Pollock, Rothko because they speak to me. They may not speak to you and that is okay also because everything is not meant for everyone, there is no one way to say this is or is not art.
Before Basquait arrived in the late 70's most acceptable art was minimal art, she changed that, he made people uncomfortable and rethink art, that is the mark of a great artist. Make people think, even it they do not like it., think.
@omahaskye It is Slippery People but it's definitely not the version found on Stop Making Sense, the female back up singers do not sound like they are singing lead in that version. And it's not the version on Speaking In Tongues. My guess is that it's a cover, which I didn't know was even made. Going to research that.

Basquiat's paintings look like shit, I would only let him scribble over my paintings if I knew it was going to make me some serious cash by selling it to rich fucking-idiots.
illustriouschin 10 months ago
@illustriouschin art does not have to be pretty, it does not have to look like something you recognize, it is not about any of that elementary stuff, it is about seeing it and feeling connected to the piece, some do not get it or like it and that is cool, everything is not for everyone but the intelligent response is not to discount it but to just say it does not speak to you and not display ignorance by calling people idiots, it makes you seem like one.
kimmyrabb 10 months ago
@kimmyrabb I could eat off one of his paintings which means I can use it as a plate which means it has a use besides just being art which makes them not art. And yes, not only do rich idiots exist, but rich fucking-idiots exist, I don't have to sugar coat it because I do not fear the rich fucking-idiots even if they sent their own personal hit squad to come kill me, it doesn't make them smarter.
illustriouschin 10 months ago
@kimmyrabb I beg to differ, I believe when people express an opinion as to what is considered artistic or not, does not mean they're not "connecting" it simply means that they don't think something should be called art. I like some of his strong color conbinations and compositions, but I don't think he was particularly talented. most art critics are a bunch of self-proclaimed visionaries, but I think most are clueless. so, talent does matter to some of us, peace

wiggin22x 10 months ago
@wiggin2 Gaga is not unique, she just isn't. I am old enough to remember artist that were far more unique and they had the nerve to have to be that way in America when the society was WAY MORE conservative and when being very political, out of the closet, dressing in the strangest ways could end your career so it was much more dangerous back then, now it is just show-biz, not that big of a deal. I have seen it before and I have seen it done better but the kids think she is new, she is not

This comment has received too many negative votes show
People have to stop justifying the scribbles of this junkie, as notable artwork. Basquiat is a joke. "Amateurish", would be a compliment. It's the worst of the worst. It's juvenile. And it, generally, only appeals to the smallest minority of the populace, whom can relate to him racially and economically. God, his stuff was bad, and not only in the sense of opinions. He was a man who's only novelty came in emulating typical toddler art, one can find scattered on a refrigerator.

zadeh79 11 months ago
The worst even is that the minorities that are supposed to get any ^benefit^ from his work, from his ideas, wont ever understand his work, not even the people who buys it, is all about the critics and is all in the name of money, if one artist do work like this and want to be SERIOUS, he cannot accept money. then... that would be a nice start.

Malleus7777 1 year ago
The artist Basquiat had something to say with his life .His work is worth million's and worth every penny.

He's actually kinda cute in this film. I assume before the drugs started. Years along his skin became very bad.
mizzpretee 1 year ago
@mizzpretee

SupremeCommander360 1 year ago
@SupremeCommander360 If it's so easy, why aren't you making millions practicing the premise of your well-cultivated and informed wisdom?
fasolplanetarium 1 year ago
@fasolplanetarium
SupremeCommander360 1 year ago
@SupremeCommander360 If you knew your art history, you'd know that this "coincidence" you speak of is applicable to every artist. Is it not a coincidence in the first place that art is so esteemed so as to allow artists to make so much money? What art isn't abstract? Art is simply a representation of a signifier. That in itself is immensely abstract. Why don't you just leave art alone and reside in your world of perpetual meaning.
fasolplanetarium 1 year ago 2
probably lack of contacts and promotion, and thats the true genius behind these guys...
trinitaterion 8 months ago
@SupremeCommander360 it was the idiosyncratic feelings he instilled into his work and that was felt by those who viewed it that made his work so special.
he just had a special style that many people saw as vibrant and 'cutting edge' and a lot of people ended up taking notice of it because he knew the right people to show it to and the rest is history as they say...

Kid comes in at 27 seconds!

what is art?
xMy3Dx 1 year ago
@xMy3Dx art is what ever you want it to be. I love Warhol, Basquiat, Pollock, Rothko because they speak to me. They may not speak to you and that is okay also because everything is not meant for everyone, there is no one way to say this is or is not art.
Before Basquait arrived in the late 70's most acceptable art was minimal art, she changed that, he made people uncomfortable and rethink art, that is the mark of a great artist. Make people think, even it they do not like it., think.

@romainvai It's the Talking Heads "Slippery People", it sounds like the Stop Making Sense version.
omahaskye 1 year ago 4
@omahaskye It is Slippery People but it's definitely not the version found on Stop Making Sense, the female back up singers do not sound like they are singing lead in that version. And it's not the version on Speaking In Tongues. My guess is that it's a cover, which I didn't know was even made. Going to research that.
