I was a kid about 9 or 10, and my older siblings had "High Flying Bird" and the Whiskey Hill Singers albums. Her version of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" is what sticks in my my. "The Salvation Army Song" is great, especially live.
Some fifty years after first hearing her has given me perspective. Judy is essentially a blues/jazz singer, and a great one. If Electra had seen this early on, instead of just riding the folk craze, she would have had a much longer run.
I had the record but could not afford to get the record back to Canada...My whole record collection completely gone because I was not given money to move after my husband died. I love Judy Henske...I think her personality enhanced her talent . Very gutsy singer.
In the seventies at the gay bar Unicorn in Baltimore, Captain Jack used to do this song as part of a drag show and dress as a Salvation Army lady. It was great. He used to make a few bucks during the chorys when the whole bar would throw nickles and dimes at Jack. Most trying to hit him. He was a beloved patron and I iss him and those times.
My mom used to have this album - if I remember the liner notes correctly, this was recorded at The Purple Onion. Not sure of the year though. Thanks for posting it!
Ahhhh this brings back memories of my childhood. Back in the days when you could go to the library and check out vinyl records. I still remember my mother bringing this record home and enjoying the humor of Judy and learning a little about the "colorful" side of life!
How wonderful to find this song! I lived in San Francisco from 1967 to 1973, at the heyday of the gay bars there. There was a bar called the Fantasy, and they had comic drag shows several times a night, and always did the Salvation Army Song. I loved it, and do to this day. It was a real treat to hear it again. Thank you, Judy.
this is where the hindu real estate brokers and the nypd get their up to date information.(the salvation army data store)the jewish buy alot of INFO here too.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that who so ever believes in Him shall not perish bu have eternal life. WE give so we can show them Jesus. We do not agree with their ways but Jesus loves them too. We do not drink but we do reach out to those who do.
@sankow2 Wow is right, because this is a fact that she does not know who started The Salvation Army, or what country is its international headquarters, she thinks The Salvation Army was started in the United States, and she is wrong! The Salvation Army was started by a gentleman by the name of William Booth, and was started in London in the United Kingdom of Great Britain on the Isle of England, and William Booth was their first General!

Coolest lady ever ... and this is one of the songs that made me who I am today, a happy little born-again Gnostic . . .
