By the way, Megadeth was influenced by Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. I can't remember the guitarist that directly influenced Dave, but Dave mentions in his VH1 interview that the guitarist helped him evolve his melodic style.

I have to disagree here with Dave about the whammy bar thing except for one occasion and it's Steve Vai. He just wrecks all of his solos and songs by overusing the whammy bar and that's just ugly to me so if you don't REALLY overuse the whammy then there is no "wrong" way of using it.

I always heard it was Kerry King that did both solos on that album as a paid favor to Rick Rubin. The funny thing is that when you give it that context and then consider the history between Mustaine and King the obvious question becomes did Dave know that when he made the comment. And if he did it could be interpreted one of two ways. Either he was shining King on or he was trying to give props to King which is common given Daves bi-polar nature with other musicians.

in terms of Picking, I think that a good example of someone is Dave Amato from REO Speedwagon is a good guy to at the very least just observe...& my father grew up with him (Framingham, Massachusetts) & if you watch him, regardless of picking speed, according to my dad (Chip Walsh) & my guitar teacher (George McCann) who have both played with Dave MANY, MANY TIMES...there's no alternate picking....Dave's all down-strokes...so go check him out...his name's Dave Amato....
