  • hi! I think you're a good guitar teacher and a nice one too. By the way I'm Sgt Agustin from the Phil. Army, I used to play lead guitar in a military band. You're lessons are very enlightening and am incorporating them to my son's guitar lessons, keep up the good work bro..!

  • Dude i have now relized that ive been doing this whole thing wrong and wow just the melodies on one string can really tie all the others together GREAT JOB!!!

  • i want that guitar... <3

  • Hooooly Crap, this video is GREAT!!!

    Nextlevelguitardotcom 4 President!!!

  • it made me understand more! thanks dude.

  • I feel like this is how Slash learned how to play :p

  • Wow i've kinda been playing like this for years i noticed i'm always playing in the high E string/B and G, and just sticking to one string and coming up with melodies, at first i feared this was really a bad thing to do because i'm not utilizing all the strings , even if what i come up with sounds really good. But to see this video and him telling me what i'm doing is actually ok makes me feel more confident and less worried. Such an amazing exercise and should be easier for me to do thanks!

  • I have this guitar Wooooooo :D

  • @MichaelDesouza14 what is this guitar callled...

  • good guitar teacher!

  • ...His timing is terrible.Always remember to TAP YOUR FOOT.

  • @jimmmmybrady It can be hard to keep in time though on one string, having to reposition your entire hand in between notes. While I agree, hes got a decent excuse..

  • @HackFreeKingdom Actually I was referring to his opening segment, which was a totally out of time disjointed mess.

  • @jimmmmybrady Mostly, yes. I didn't even hear the backing track there at first.

  • damn its sound so good i must lean that so time to pick up the guitar :)

  • awesome improv, and quite a good lesson, made me pick up the guitar and play it `till my fingertips got so sensible i couldn`t hold my cigarette :] good way to practice quitting smoking :D

  • you're a top teacher dude!

  • this video really helped me in my understanding of the scales

  • guitar model?

  • 03:21 Me: Oh darn it 22 frets only... its okay

03:30 Me: Damn he got 24 frets and hes smiling at me!!! GRHHH

JK Your an awesome guy david, Thanks for sharing this with us!

  • what kind of pedal would anyone recomend for soloing like this.

  • @TheBlackroseEp its called practice

  • Grea Music Theory, man. I do believe that you have some nice, simple explanations and great playing! Please do continue posting videos, David. I highly appreciate what you've been able to help grasp on music.

  • I bet you listened to a lot of Iron Maiden back in the day! :) Glad you're being a great influence to the youngens! Need more like you in the world. Great work!

  • i like yr music.... n yr teachin

bt the thin is u speak too much n very slow.. sumtyms i get bored...

  • oldinfant23 you can buy a cheap guitar for less than 100 quid. save up and you can do it :)

  • I didnt know Dirk Nowitzki taught guitar!

  • Im just better than this guy and only been playing for 4 years....

  • @GuitarGuy366 you are maybe better in speed and such stuff but to improvise like him takes years of expirience

  • @GuitarGuy366 Aww man. Don't let your ego get the best of you. You'll always run into someone with a more interesting style no matter how long you've been playing. Please don't put yourself on a shelf yet. Wait another 10 years or so. Peace out!

  • 7:01 I now know how he picks up his woman

  • i want to learn... but i can't afford to buy electric guitar :(

  • I just want to say thanks, your lessons really helped me on my speed

  • this guy sounds a litte like james hetfield :D anyone agree?

  • this guy fukin rocks

  • YOU ARE A GOOD GUITARIST because U give me this lesson for FREE=D

  • Is site membership free?

  • thumbs up if the sound reminds yu slash wen hes playing

  • u should be famous :D

  • this guy and his associates have helped me tremendously, and becuz of that "my guitar journeys are going famously"

  • this is how to understand basic soloing

  • I like this guy. It doesn't feel like some random douchebag on the internet showing you a video of something you can't do, and then calling it a lesson. This guy is TEACHING and doing a helluva good job at it. He teaches it almost like a parent would teach their child something. (in a good way)

  • need to work on your rhythm and timing

  • he wasnt good:(

  • This guy is probably the best guitar teacher on the internet...He explains everything perfectly and you can tell he enjoys teaching!!

  • i kinda think this is about the best of the bunch!!he seems like hes trying to help me !!

he doesnt show off and ramble ya know it is hard to teach and i think hes pretty good

  • I don't mean to be a dick but this guy's phrasing is terrible. No feeling behind it.

  • @nxzo2 His phrasing is worse than mine.... he shouldnt be doing lessons on this. :S

  • Im really liking these vids, Ty so much. I am confused though when he switched to the B-string improv/scale ... when he got to the G on the 22nd fret he said that was the root note. Im confused as to why that is the root, for that scale on that string. Ty in advance.

  • @XxUndeniedxX well, he is playing G-major scale, so all the G notes on every string is root notes. For example if you're playing E-minor scale your root note is E no matter what string you are playing.

  • WOW! this is the freshest vid ive seen in a long long time!!

  • Anyone with this amount of playing and teaching talent and time invested in his work deserves to get paid. Great lessons! Hope your doing well financially as a result. Whiners be gone.

  • @berlits but wait wouldnt that mean that ur playing to different keys at the same time argh fuck i wish i could get this!

  • @berlits so minor fall under the major scale rule?

  • what type of pedal or mode are you using?

  • April 2011 and I have just ordered the Next Level Guitar Delta/Chicago Blues 4 Disc Set and am eagerly waiting for it to arrive here in the UK. I thought Id browse to see if David any other lessons and came across this. Fantasic. I hope the DVDs are as good. CAN'T WAIT! Tony

  • @berlits im only beginning to learn most theory but forgive me if im wrong man but if its for example c major does that mean that it goes like this in the order?

    CDEFGAB

  • Thank you! Man. This is an awesome way to learn licks on the first and second string. It is is great for a beginner like me. It sounds so great when you play it !!

  • Brilliant lesson. So simple yet it taught me so much. Just wanted to ask what tone settings you have on that amp in this video... gain, mid, bass, treble etc? I'm not great with amps so finding a tone I like is difficult sometimes.

  • you teach and explain very well... two thumbs up ;)

  • He and Marty Schwartz are the absolute best

  • its rocking!! loved ur lesson!!

  • so all the notes he's hitting are the ONLY hte notes from the major scale?

  • This lesson really just showed me the light of my skillz on guitar thank you O wizard mage from mars , cuz of you ima be awsome

  • real teaching

and can i get the backing tracks for this scales

  • GOOD TEACHER

  • B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L

  • Whats the name of the song that he plays at the beginning?

  • lol he basically played Free Bird

  • im so lost i have no idea what any of this has to do with ne thing im using ur videos for chord pergression and fingure strengthing so far so this is all new to me and im lost beyond belief lol

  • wht guitar is that?

  • @UNFORGOTENSOLDIER PRS i believe...don't know the model, but it's a pretty looking thing ain't it?

  • @UNFORGOTENSOLDIER his guitar is a Paul Reed Smith but i dont know what kind.

  • wht guitar is that?

  • whats the song that he plays at the beginning?

  • this tutorial has helped me a lot to memorise the notes on the neck of a guitar... you are a great teacher..

  • holy crap i never got that notes for soloing method and how the whole neck is connected until now! thank you so much! doing 1 string at a time and seeing what notes fit and then putting them together is just amazing method of teaching this

  • This has to be one of THE best methods of memorising string notes & scale notes, thank you so much for an invaluable lesson!!

  • yo the best man thx a lot homie!!

  • dude i used to watch on google video back in the days x) like 2006 haha i learned "Bad moon rising" , "Sweet home Alabama", etc.. thanks man

  • Washington is next!

  • there's nothing better then free guitar lessons <3

  • sounds, like a kid playing.....

  • @beerdeddi sounds, like a kid commenting

  • @Ycjedi and the piont goes to you! But the sound is really weird, and the guy has not much prsctice. I play better.

  • @beerdeddi

then wheres your video then? If you're better, don't just use your words, we need proof. Maybe we could learn something from your video when it comes out?

  • great lesson , the melody are very great and beautiful .. and its all on one string .

by not having the tabs it force you to understand and develop melody instead of just practicing someone else riffs

for those who wished they had the tabs .. just type "standard tuning fretboard" and you will find the whole note position on the fretboard . it helped . song is G minor so G-a-b-c-d-e-f# , find these note and practice on the string .

  • @artifact26 Gmajor sorry mistake while typing .

  • if i can learn this il be awesome.

  • I play bass and I do this some times too. Ill come up with a melody on my G string then play it the bass line in the Key of G with the other strings.

This is actually a very very VERY useful lesson.

Thanks man since ive started watching your videos my playing has improved significantly

  • Thank you very much David. <3 ur site , please upload more rock licks and concepts :P

  • Gary Schuts from expert village made 36 accounts and dislike this

  • @197syahnur

Actualy he has made a 37th

  • @197syahnur if you dont like it somethings up in your brain

  • David T. & Marty S. is the best Teachers. love you guys. Thanks for all yall have taught me.

  • I love how he stares at you :)

  • It is well done. Its always nice to polish up on one fingering...hell i need to find my Gf..where the fek is she lol

Nice work tho, helpful and intuative thx guv

  • erm..i`m self taught. but this helps. just one point i have. The "neck" is at the top of the "fingerboard" ..soz .

  • Dude ur a legend on guitar ur lessons are about 2 turn my alright playing into fucking shredding solos lol thanx david :)

  • my first string is the 2 n d string :(

  • Fantastic. Thanks a lot. This is really helpful.

  • nice Fuckin guitar...

  • this was a really good lesson i just got some pretty good ideas

  • Really cool lesson!

  • You and justin sandercoe should make a lesson together :D

  • I strongly agree! This guy knows how to teach! A lot of people that can play guitar can't teach very well. I have learned some very important steps that other teachers just haven't been able to get me to understand. When I get onto youtube to watch guitar lessons I look for this guy right away! I can't thank him enough!

  • one of the best teachers in guitar....you ROCK

  • i didnt know didrk nowtsky played guitar!

  • Good teach.

    Mamouth2000 seems angry???

  • @speaks66 Yeah.....

  • Amazing!

  • love it

    awesome thx!

  • thank you bro

  • What a good lesson cheers mate.

  • thank you for the free jam tracks! they were great, and keep on with the video lessons! theyre helping out soon to be great musicians

  • can i play G major scale on every song?

  • @zannaroo

no but you can play a g major scale of chords in the key of G such as D, C, Em....you just have to select the right modes within that key to their respective positions..for example, D is the fifth of G so a great major mode to play over it would be D mixolydian

  • @zannaroo

if its in the key of g then yes g major, but you can also use the relative minor being the minor 6th, e minor.

  • @zannaroo Not really the most important thing with a song is the Key that its in. Once you determine that you can then connect the right notes to complete the song.

From what ive experienced the shapes are more or less the same for alot of the scales, its just the starting note that differs and determines the "key"

Also the reason why he's showing us G is because thats the most popular scale for blues and rock.

AC/DC uses this scale ALOT. Led Zeppelin also like using it

  • Agree...he put alot of effort in these vid's just to help inform us. gota give him some credit and gratitude.

  • I got a Question. Can i play G major scale on every song which have G as key tune?

  • @raawnn If it's a song in G Major.. if its in G Major you're gunna sound a little off

  • @EJSMITTY17 ok

  • i hate wen people do vibrato and shake the hole guitar haha great vid tho

  • good method for beginers...thanx...

  • yes he is a good teacher mamouth he shows and goes slow

  • It's called PHASING.. The whole reason for playing on one string is to make you "FIND" each note using your ears. Once you tune in it helps you on all strings.

  • U ARE GOOD TEACHER BUT NOT PLAY VERY WELL

  • i Think you are one of the best guitarsts in youtube, you also teach very well. Congratulations

  • @uekelele mabye he teaches good but he's defently not even in the top 50...

  • this is not going to be effective....

soloing on one string can be easy, but putting all together is difficult and I dont think anyone should be learning in this manner.

  • Awesome lesson! Pushing myself to a next level mh? sounds interessting

  • so beautiful...

  • sorry people, but this teacher has to study more

  • awsome!!! its so simple and sounds f* nice!!!!

  • Dude I dont doubt that you can play me under the table (guitar that is) but do you not notice that all your bends are completly flat? Its like listening to cat being stepped on.

  • how am i suppose tto know what notes r what?

  • Dave thank you for your classes , Here in Darjeeling we dont have many teachers and so naturally were on line... we enjoy your classses siping darjeeling tea. Thanks a lot. Pemba

  • can someone help me when im hitting notes on the low e string for example should i mainly stick to the G major scale notes(G-A-B-C-D-E-F#) on that string or should i just hit every note i want.

  • if i dont have distortion on my amp, will soloing sound as good or is it vital that i get distortion.

  • @JSSSLVVV U don't need distortion, but it really all depends on what type of music you play.

i.e. Metal- distortion u will probably need

Rock- most of the time yes but depending on the attitude of the song you may not need distortion

But for practicality just get a distortion pedal (or a fuzz) it'll come in handy

  • When i try to come up with solos and stuff i like to keep it on the G and B string and save the high E for the ends and really high bends and such.

  • woah :D

  • i am 20 year old and is it to late to learn playing a guitar...electric ofcourse becauze i love punk music

  • @yugoslavian90 never is too late to rock!

  • @yugoslavian90 No way man. Get started and don't stop.

  • @yugoslavian90 , I started when I was 20, so it's not to late.

  • That's a really good idea! Thanks!

  • this helped alot

  • this fucking works!!

  • Helpfull

  • This lesson helped me with improvisation most of all lessons on youtube ;-) thx :)

  • Man you Rock,

  • Anyone else think that the solo in the intro sounds really abrasive to the chord progression? It sounds.. bad.. Im not a negative person at all, and I try to be positive as much as I can.. But I really don't think these guys are good at teaching or playing.. These guys just want your money; they don't care if you learn anything. Guys like Pebber Brown give much better beginner lessons for free on youtube in my opinion.

  • @QuotidianHegemony Your crazy...these guys are awesome, they just want ur money, but they have over 700 videos on just about everything you could want to learn, they give free jam tracks and just gave away a Nice Ass see through Electric...I only wish he had more time just so he could slow down alittle...ive done rewinded it like 10 times and im tabbing it...ive only been playing a year, all self taught with youtubes help lol...and NextLvLGuitar Is Awesome....Keep it up...I love it

  • @SpadesFLush13 Well, if you like what he played there, I feel sorry for you... I have played for slightly more than a year. Im not claiming to be great or anything, and you can listen to my music and develop your own opinion on my playing. I personally think that I have progressed much faster than the large majority of guitar players primarily due to my personal practice routine, and lessons by pebber brown. I don't think these guys are any good at all.

  • @QuotidianHegemony You're a moron. These guys would pwn you in every way. Whatever you are best at in guitar, they would rape you on it. I've listened to your songs, they are good (especially if you've only been playing a year, which I doubt)...but that's besides the fact. These guys are producing lessons on the most general levels for beginners. I've been playing for many years, I hang out at guitar stores whenever I'm not working; these guys give the best lessons for what people want.

  • such a nice tone

  • HEY U FUCKING RETARDS THATS POST COMMENTS. HES A GREAT TEACHER AND THIS EXERCISE IS WELL DONE VERY HELPFULL. THOOSE OF U WHO DONT LIKE DONT WATCH JUST PLAY UR CRAP AND FUCKK OFF. DUDE GREAT VIDEOS KEEP UP

  • @mamouth2000 amen lol
