So, question: Let's say you want to abridge a series that is insanely difficult to find on DVD, like Cardcaptors or Digimon Adventure. I'd definitely buy the DVD if it were available, but the only available ones are quite possibly bootlegs (which we all know nobody should be supporting. What do you do in that situation?

Audacity: best program for adjusting sound. I agree about Windows Movie Maker, simple, limited, often glitches and messes with timing of tracks. I love MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus, difficult for some (WMM lovers XD ), but gives so much more freedom (I'm so sick of AMV's made with WMM). Reading these comments made me laugh. People have trouble using Windows Movie Maker!? I've wondered about what editing program Vegeta3986 uses. Can't wait to see your input on Naruto Abridged!
When did Lanipator do that 0:10? If someone makes a Rosario Vampire abridged series they won't be able to use DVDs yet. Zeldagamegod doesn't get all technical with this. He says you can download stuff from youtube. That can be convenient if you don't want to pay for the anime series. Damn my computer is so inferior I can't make any videos. I made a flash video but unfortunately it couldn't be sent to youtube. I would use photoshop.

The reason i'm doing this is because I do own the whole series and im a big fan of it, and I figure it could be abridged pretty well. I don't believe that matters to DVD Decrypter, but I could very well be wrong-- I've never tried ripping anything besides Region 1 or occasionally the odd region free disc myself.
I've decided to make the Final Fantasy Unlimited abridged, it'll give me something to do and I LOVE FINAL FANTASY my favorite being VI and IV.
Hopefully people like it, only problem I might have is the voice acting, I've never taken an acting class in my life but I'm a great writer.
One question if I owned the DVD but my computer can't burn DVD's would you think it would be fine to download because I technically own it or should I wait until I get a better computer so that i could burn them?
A good PC DVD-ROM drive can be had for under $20 nowadays, so there's no reason not to just get one. Ripped footage will be much easier to work with and yield higher-quality results (useful now that YouTube videos don't necessarily have to look like crap any more) than downloaded footage in any case.
Thanks for the reply, it might take me a while to do the series because I'll have to re-watch the entire series, beat a few more Final Fantasy games so I can make sure I can get all the reference I can, and practice my voice acting.

You can get Soundbooth with Adobe CS3, which can edit sounds. If you have a friend with accss to an Iraqi Bazaar, you can get it for a decent price ($5.00)

I don't see why your comment was down voted. But anyway, just look for raws, or see if there's an official download somewhere (which will cost money, in yen.). Or you could go to a place that sells imports, and see if the dvds are on sale there.

funny thing about that.i found a leather jacket in about my size (but with a long size(low waist) and short sleeves for like 30$ at a liquidation store(and a trench coat for like 20$) but mine was a womans jacket(or so my mom sez) and may not be real leather.

everytime i use the noise removal on audiocity it leaves some wierd echoish sound and my voice comes up slightly altered because of that noise. how do I stop that?
About the mic, I just wait till everyone's gone and do a slew of recordings with Audacity, at which point I also chop the noise before it even becomes a saved file. Of course, sometimes it sounds like I'm speaking into a tin can, but if you voice-over instead of killing the original audio, it sounds a little cleaner.
2.) If you MUST download, avoid Real formats at all cost. RealPlayer is clearly the work of some malevolent demon who wants to taint your computer with the stench of crap.
Agree I tried making one once but had to buy a program to convert real player and though it worked viewing wise it kinda didn't let me make some stuff into videos but thats probably somewhat from the fact I only have WMM. Everything is on hold now...........
OK ive got the DVD BUT its my dads there the old speed racer DVD episodes so does riping mean when I want to watch the DVD will it be there or erased?
Most DVDs(I believe all comercial ones, actually) are read-only. That means short of doing something like scratching the disc, braking it, etc., you can't lose the data/video. So don't worry about losing anything when you rip.
Realplayer doesn't work with the latest firefox, so you'll have to look for plugins to replace it. And every abridger uses a disclaimer somewhere stating that they do not own the rights, and some say SUPPORT THE OFFICIAL RELEASE. Tends to make the original owner less likely to make a legal issue.
Real player files only good perpose is space, it takes up very little space, but in return when you convert it, like I did by turning it into an mkv and then avi. it messes up the quality sometimes if it even coverts at all.
Wow, this has been infinitely helpful, and just in my time of need too! I was re-watching all of Berserk TAS, wishing that I could do a great abridged series like that. Then it hit me. Why did Berserk feel so awesome? It was because the creator loved the original work. (also that some of the character aspects were so insane in the first place) So I thought about which anime I loved the most. The anime started it all, for me. My number 1 anime of all time.

well 4kids does come in other languages as well its very possible he did that i made a pokemon greeting card for my cousin i had to download it in italian(i know right!). But its much easier to get the dvds even if u dont have space to save u always have the dvd to go back to. (>^.^)>

non- abridged series what is it a fan dub? or what,in any case audacity is a program used to record audio and the mic is to make your voicing more clearer both adding up to a better voice for your character so yes this stuff will work for your series

WORD. And I feel that way about AMVs, too. I get so annoyed seeing people making videos of shows that have been out on DVD for awhile now, and the footage has subs! And this goes double for short shows, like Berserk (6 DVDs) or, say, Fruits Basket (only 4) that are easy to buy. Even if you have to buy them one at a time, every other month or so...

Hmm. I use goldwave for voice editing. It's not free, but it gets the job done way better than Audacity [when it comes to reducing noise that is]. Goldwave 5.23 is what I use because when it expires, you can actually download it as many times as you want again and again. And that SUCKS because my samsung mic was about 120 dollars and up. I guess I just really wanted a good quality one since I want to be a VA one day. Nice tips~

I haven't really ever tried to use Vista for editing purposes, I understand that in general it can cause some compatibility problems with software that was designed for XP, but I really have no idea which of the programs I discussed are Vista-friendly and which aren't.

I can help you there, when you are finished making your audio on audacity, go on File then to Export As WAV. click it and save it right after you are able to import it to your WMM ^^

eBay, much like most of the rest of that cosplay. They don't really make red leather jackets in men's sizes any more, that one is a vintage piece from the 70's. Thankfully it was also one of the cheaper ones I looked at, I only paid like twelve bucks for it. Now on the subject of Converting DVD files to AVI files.
A good DVD to AVI converter is 3GP Converter. It's good for people who don't want to do all the technical stuff. It's also free.
All you do is use DVD decryptor, get your DVD files, open up 3GP choose a certain setting(AVI), drag and drop the AVI file and there you go!
It also reduces the file size greatly.

The DVD file size for one episode of EVA is a 800MB - a gig.

Umm, what? I'm sorry, do you know what the word "Communist" means? This is like the third or fourth time in the last little while that I've seen someone using that word in a way that suggests that they think it means the exact opposite of what it actually means.

I don't see how dubbing companies would promote censorship(well 4kids kind of does). Also I think your talking more about a Toletarian State, which uses censorship at a full force which is mostly used in dictatorship.
Ex. Use of secret police, telling the newspapers what to report.
As for communism there are different types. But it was originally thought by Karl Marx. Communism was meant for no classes. When I mean no classes I mean no Upper, Middle, Lower...

Exactly. Totalitarianism is bad no matter what kind of political or economic structure it ostensibly exists within. It has nothing to do with communism.
Even then, comparing businessmen who have made some silly decisions that alienate part of their customer base to a totalitarian state is pretty ridiculous.

I don't see why your comment was down voted. But anyway, just look for raws, or see if there's an official download somewhere (which will cost money, in yen.). Or you could go to a place that sells imports, and see if the dvds are on sale there.

funny thing about that.i found a leather jacket in about my size (but with a long size(low waist) and short sleeves for like 30$ at a liquidation store(and a trench coat for like 20$) but mine was a womans jacket(or so my mom sez) and may not be real leather.

everytime i use the noise removal on audiocity it leaves some wierd echoish sound and my voice comes up slightly altered because of that noise. how do I stop that?

About the mic, I just wait till everyone's gone and do a slew of recordings with Audacity, at which point I also chop the noise before it even becomes a saved file. Of course, sometimes it sounds like I'm speaking into a tin can, but if you voice-over instead of killing the original audio, it sounds a little cleaner.

Agree I tried making one once but had to buy a program to convert real player and though it worked viewing wise it kinda didn't let me make some stuff into videos but thats probably somewhat from the fact I only have WMM. Everything is on hold now...........

Most DVDs(I believe all comercial ones, actually) are read-only. That means short of doing something like scratching the disc, braking it, etc., you can't lose the data/video. So don't worry about losing anything when you rip.

Realplayer doesn't work with the latest firefox, so you'll have to look for plugins to replace it. And every abridger uses a disclaimer somewhere stating that they do not own the rights, and some say SUPPORT THE OFFICIAL RELEASE. Tends to make the original owner less likely to make a legal issue.

Real player files only good perpose is space, it takes up very little space, but in return when you convert it, like I did by turning it into an mkv and then avi. it messes up the quality sometimes if it even coverts at all.

Wow, this has been infinitely helpful, and just in my time of need too! I was re-watching all of Berserk TAS, wishing that I could do a great abridged series like that. Then it hit me. Why did Berserk feel so awesome? It was because the creator loved the original work. (also that some of the character aspects were so insane in the first place) So I thought about which anime I loved the most. The anime started it all, for me. My number 1 anime of all time.
Time to gear up for the GR Project! ^_^

hbi2k, you said that the only excuse for not having the dvds is if it's so new, that it hasn't come out on dvd yet. but what if you were somehow incapable of getting the dvd, or that it was really rare, expansive or unpopular or something? or what if it's done by 4kids, and they only release the crappy censored version? (which makes me wonder how littlekuriboh did it...) this is the problem i'm having, because i'm doing one piece, and only 1 uncut funimation dvd has been released so far for it

well 4kids does come in other languages as well its very possible he did that i made a pokemon greeting card for my cousin i had to download it in italian(i know right!). But its much easier to get the dvds even if u dont have space to save u always have the dvd to go back to. (>^.^)>

non- abridged series what is it a fan dub? or what,in any case audacity is a program used to record audio and the mic is to make your voicing more clearer both adding up to a better voice for your character so yes this stuff will work for your series

WORD. And I feel that way about AMVs, too. I get so annoyed seeing people making videos of shows that have been out on DVD for awhile now, and the footage has subs! And this goes double for short shows, like Berserk (6 DVDs) or, say, Fruits Basket (only 4) that are easy to buy. Even if you have to buy them one at a time, every other month or so...

Hmm. I use goldwave for voice editing. It's not free, but it gets the job done way better than Audacity [when it comes to reducing noise that is]. Goldwave 5.23 is what I use because when it expires, you can actually download it as many times as you want again and again. And that SUCKS because my samsung mic was about 120 dollars and up. I guess I just really wanted a good quality one since I want to be a VA one day. Nice tips~

I haven't really ever tried to use Vista for editing purposes, I understand that in general it can cause some compatibility problems with software that was designed for XP, but I really have no idea which of the programs I discussed are Vista-friendly and which aren't.

Do a Google search for "text to speech." There are lots of different programs out there; the one I use is called Power Text to Speech Reader.

Hello hbi2k, I am a won't to be abridger, by your advise, I downloaded a audacity program. learning how do use it is kind of easy, but i'm one of those losers that uses windows movie maker, and I don't know what to do after you have recorded what you need and then save it. ok you do you convert it so you can use it on a WMM or what ever. sorry if this is going to be annoying to you but i'm just an idiot.

I can help you there, when you are finished making your audio on audacity, go on File then to Export As WAV. click it and save it right after you are able to import it to your WMM ^^

eBay, much like most of the rest of that cosplay. They don't really make red leather jackets in men's sizes any more, that one is a vintage piece from the 70's. Thankfully it was also one of the cheaper ones I looked at, I only paid like twelve bucks for it. It's a nice jacket, too, it's really soft and worn-in and really comfy (not so much in Tucson in July, but still). (-:
