The new (Michael Pluznick) MP Eco Pro 12 and 13" djembes are now in production! They will be available in the USA at X8 drums. We will also be shipping out in minimum orders of 10 drums from Bali if you live somewhere else. Contact me here if you are interested in ordering.
I noticed that too. In his instructional videos when he is playing by himself there is a more cupped slap and when he is performing there is more of a closer in djembe slap. I saw the "cup" technique in Mali as well.
Yes and yes. You are very observant! I am also conga player . However, having said that...in Mali I was also shown the hand technique for making a drier djembe slap. I do this in videos when I am teaching so that it is easier to distinguish the slap from the tone. I find that with high pitched drums, it is harder for students to decipher..so I use this. You'll notice in the ensemble shots I am not using the "cupped" hand.

Is your cupped hand slap a technique used in Mali or do you play a lot of congas?
Thanks for posting, I really enjoy your regular drumming videos :)
