Frankie, Don Mare owes you. You sold me a set of his Super Sports. Had them installed this weekend. Awesome. I was a little dissapointed that I still can't play like you though. Maybe it's that Dr. Z...
I recently picked up a 1960 Relic Strat and it's a bit dark sounding. Not sure if pickups will make a big diff. I want more of that tone your getting. I was looking at Van Zandts and a few people I know keep telling me about them. I also played a guys 56 Relic this year that had Lollar Blondes in it and that thing had some power. Do you know anything about the Relic Strat CS pickups? I'm guessing they are a little weak in output. Thanks for the Awesome Vids!
@stratthead Thanks for writing. The Lollars are Alnico 2. And have a softer, totally different vibe. Funny, I actually ended up putting these Don Mars PU's in the cream strat you are talking about, and they sound a lot different. The blue strat has a little edgy sound, no matter what PU's are in it. Also, the bass on the amp was on one, or completely turned off. But, I can say this...I have tried a ton of different strat PU's, and the mare's are up there with the best of them.
@stratthead not better. different.. blondes have more of a strat ,, chimey clean sound,, this one are bitty and aggresive , blues with this one must me killer...
quick question: can you comment on the difference between the don mare super sport to the fender cs 69? I'm thinking of buying the cs 69 but might go with don mare if its smoother and have better 3D chimey bell quality.
Sure, The 69's are really nice sounding too...much brighter, and no hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4. The Super Sport's have more out-put, and are a little darker and smoother. You would have to request the RW/RP middle if you wanted hum-cancelling in 2 and 4. The SS bridge is hotter then vintage, if you like that sort of thing. He makes a set called the Josie/Vaughn which is the same set, but the bridge is bridge is not as hot, closer to vintage spec....
Thanks for the info Starman. I noticed the CS69 has really deep lows. Just wondering if the super sport has the same depth on the low end? And also if you don't mind me asking, why did you changed from the cs69 to the super sport? Thanks heaps

Sounds hard and midrangey, a little nasally. I heard a clip of yours with Lollars and it sounded much better. This sounds very narrow. No bass.
