Dowd was obviously near the end of his life, must've been from '02. In "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music" you can see how he ages throughout the documentary which took 5 or so years to make. He was able to discipline self destructive musicians in the studio because there was so much respect. Butch Trucks told a story of Dowd sending the band home if something was off and he didn't like the way the band sounded.
@zisoul Thanks man...yep we are still working on it....I hope to get this done soon...the sooner the better I say...lol... yep that show they did about Tom was damn kick ass... wow...
Such a shame this man isn't in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. I mean Aretha Frankin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton. The guy produced albums for all of them. He invented muti track recording. He changed the way music is recorded. Greatest producer of all time.
I love all of the musicians he helped. And while I was aware of who he was, I never realized his tremendous contribution. A person who posesses that kind of genius
normally isn' t that kind and caring. He did seem to genuinly care about the people he worked with.
@ahhah53 no problem..that was a kick ass documentary they did...just about 4 years ago...amazing footage from the archives and they captured Tom while he was working...it was something else!!!
@ahhah53 I do apologize,, A few years ago I recorded on my DVR a documentary on Tom Dowd from PBS. It did not include this footage. Sorry again for the misconception
A musical genius talk's about a musical genius. Tom Dowd and Ronnie Van Zant, a prolific writer and a prolific recording engineer. Many people don't know this, but Tom Dowd is responsible for the recording of some of the greatest albums of our time. He's definitely responsible for the greatest live albums of all time. The Allman Brothers Band-Live At The Fillmore East Lynyrd Skynyrd Band-One More From The Road. He also mixed and recorded Clapton's Layla album with Derek and The Domino's.
The technical skills that were lost when he died will never be replaced. Most people who record, are just people who record, but he was a real audio engineer.
the best true words I've heard in years!!!!! ....yeah this seems to be the problem in Nashville over 800 recording studios in town..and most suck at it...not to mention the scammer producers nowadays
Yea many guys today are lost without tech support. I'm one of them. He was a great man. He went from vinyl to tape and then to ones and zero's he could do it all, he was also apart of the Manhattan Project. His documentary should be shown in audio recording university curriculums.
Exile - that's indeed the same man. A brilliant man, no question. There's a great segment on here with him playing with the various parts of "Layla" and it's just magic, for anyone who really appreciates rock and roll.
It's significant to note that Judy Van Zant mentioned him as one of the three people to thank at the Rock Hall of Fame Ceremonies, along with Lacy and Marian Van Zant.
RIP, Tom, we'll remember your art for a long time.
Rich its not been edited yet...still waiting to get more interviews so we can do a good edit for the dvd ...it will take time...Tom talked for 6 hours...not all about Skynyrd either...
Tom Dowd was an amazing human being (as 'Little Big Man' would say) His smile was infectious, his positive personality was infectious. His spirit was and STILL IS infectious!!! Great clip. Thanks for posting this.
Ronnie Van Zant was/is and will always be LYNYRD SKYNYRD...He was the straw that stirred the drink...He kept everybody in line..I know Allen and Gary were founding members but without RVZ there...It JUST WASN"T THE SAME..I have seen the current lineup a couple of times..Even went to the FIRST SHOW AT THE VOLUNTEER JAM in 1987...But after that it got old....Put it to bed Gary...IT was great while it lasted..But Skynyrd was RVZ" band and for anybody to say different doesn't know Skynyrd..
i do not agree that its horrible but skynyrd will most definately not ever live like it did with RVZ but gary is still keeping the skynyrd flame going and for me, unfortunately not alive during there golden period of music i still saw them at least once but i do know my skynyrd history i am thankful for gary for still keeping it going even though it isnt the same nor ever will be again
I have my days where I think it is good for them to keep the music going so a new generation of fans will keep it alive....thats very cool.....but I have days where I think they should stop and take care of their health and just let it be....to me they have proven a point ....I think Johnny and Donnie should make more records together....they do well with that....
When I first saw the documentary on Dowd, it just killed me at the end when it said he'd died! He seemed like such a great guy. I cant wait to see this doc on Skynyrd, been waiting for 30 yrs for something like this!
this is just another video trying to prove my daddy was violent,he wasn't,he was normal,we had gators in Florida, and they would attack family pets, and the homeowners should testify to this, but they won't,..'cause publicity sells.
This didnt make Ronnie look bad. Dowd's comment "This is where he came from" says it all, and that fits the profile of someone who wants to protect his family and pets from harm.
Tom told me a story that happened when the band was recording at Muscle Shoals, I believe. Something about Ronnie taking out some jalousie windows of a BBQ joint that was closed on a Sunday. Ronnie just had to have him some ribs. If I remember the story right, Ronnie left some money and a note for the owner who called the sheriff and had Ronnie picked up at the studio for B&E. I believe Tom said the owner dropped the charges against him. He changed a lyric about how many times he was busted...
yea i know, but from what i know ronnie knew the plane was having trouble, and he went aboard saying the show must go on. maybe it was one of those meant to be things
Did anyone catch the special about Tom Dowd that aired on IFC? GREAT show - what a fabulous, interesting life he had. Who would know that he was a nuclear enginerre before he got into music?
