In a number of countries, they do in fact use the term "American" to say that one is from the Americas. In Canada and the US, however, American almost exclusively means "Citizen of the United States". Just a thing. I realise you are from the US, but I don't think I've ever heard a fellow Canadian reference themselves as "American".
