I kinda had a mixed feeling about this game... it IS a good game, but i felt a little disappointed with the storyline. Mainly because it was set in this universe and secondly because it lacked most of the elements that made the other AC's so dramatic. But god... the DFM, JESUS CHRIST THE DOGFIGHT MODE WAS AMAZING! They sort of overused it however, as it was pretty much the only way to get kills with the machinegun, something that was pretty natural in the other AC's.
This game isn't bad, but it isn't a game for people who liked the previous ones. The problem for Ace combat veterans is that DFM is just about the ONLY way to get kills. DFM feels really restrictive when compared to the previous games more traditional dogfighting which was rendered impossible. This game is designed to attract new players from other games like Call of Duty and Battlefield. So if you've never played Ace Combat, I would highly recommend this game to you.
i have been playing since ace combat 1.. but then stopped playing when they exclusive the "ace combat 6: fires of liberation" to the xbox 360.. THAT pisses me off!! because i don have xbox 360, and i wont waste more money to buy another console just to play a god damn game. this game?? going to think again b4 buying, because i am still pissed. i know some of u wont like to see this.. i would say " FUCK OFF"
I am an ace combat veteran and I've been playing since ace combat 3 electosphere. All of them are supreme and I really wish I could get the new one but I don't have a next gen console (f***) but I'm ver glad it got a good review. DFM is definatly a revolutionary creation.
This game is sorely underrated. The campaign was a step backwards compared to the previous games set in Strangereal because, let's be honest, anything set with a "modern war" scenario is going to feel really samey right now. Multiplayer, however, is awesome. DFM is just what it needed. Playing AC6 online was a nightmare because not only was the skill gap far too large but the QAAMs were too imbalanced and deathmatch was the only real option.
I just wanted to say that I thought this review was really entertaining and fair, pointing out the much needed freshness in the genre, while also commenting on it's inherent flaws, nicely done! I too am excited to see the developers hopefully polish this amazingly fun gameplay element.
Also, I didn't think it was possible to rock a moustache like that without looking like a child molester, but I was wrong. I too wish to grow a manly cookie duster like yours someday! Keep up the good work bro!
Dude, Joe, WTF? Dog fight mode is annoying since this game made it damn near impossible to fit the enemy with your main guns unless you were in dog fight mode. I remember ace combat 3 when i'd be have amazing air fights against multiple enemies where i'd be rolling and flipping with my guns blazing and using missles on some so i can focus on dodging and fighting others.
~cont~ next, while i'm not saying that the way AC in the past has done missile capacity is anywhere near accurate. the maneuvers you use are, in real dogfighting combat the intensity is the standoff, you and your opponent using immelman and split s maneuvers trying to get a firing solution. that is aerial combat at it's best, while i think AH is a good game for those not really serious about true aerial combat, it should have taken the AC name off of it and just sold it as assault horizon.
interesting review, i gotta say though that i'm one of the ones who HATE DFM mode. one, you gotta be almost at gun range to engage it. two, your enemies don't have to be at that range to do the same. Three, you have limited evasion in DFM unless your enemy is in gun range then you can do the evasive counter or you break DFM. But the thing is, as any fighter pilot would tell you, is that you don't want a bogey on your 6 and in gun range, since there is virtually no possibility of a miss.

You don't need to have played the previous to play it. According to your argument people shouldn't review games like Fifa or Madden because there's been 10+ games with that title before it.

i see you like to use the f-35 its all right but its not a good fighter its more of a stealth bomber, if you want a good multi roll i would say to use the russian PAK fa very good multi roll

Only prob I had with the dogfight mode was it's way too scripted. I unloaded 9 missiles into an enemy ace but they were wasted as it was destined to crash into the same billboard every time and the dogfight mode simply needed me to go that way.
@yellowravenpro I don't think this one had the best script, intact it was probably the weakest of them all. Do you even remember what your companion's name was? Cuz' I shure don't. I remember every other ace I fought with, Grimm, Chopper, Swordsman, Pixie, Garuad 2 and so on... Also typing on a iPod is a bitch.
Right about one thing- its not ace combat. I had my doubts, especially when they said "Call of duty in the air is under selling it (I like CoD, but that stuff needs to stay out of Ace Combat)." Still, I picked up my pre-order with a glimmer of hope. DFM was fun...at first. Campaign was nothing to write home about, and multiplayer lost its glam when it was just one DFM fight after the next. DFM was flashy and cool, but quickly lost its charm after the first 50 times. I traded mine in for Skyrim.
In my opinion, the only issues of the game are the story, it could have been way better, but nothing is perfect; the final boss, which is veery easy; and the multiplayer servers and lobby, they should make them like modern warfare 3 becuase they have some issues, sometimes it takes a looong time to find a match.
the mechanics look good and everything, and im sure the gameplay is great, but i liked the fake world that they used to have. quite frankly, im tired of fighting the russians. anyone else?

@gmanhalflife I played the game and in my opinion is waay better than its predecesors in therms of script. I KNOW its the typical america vs russia but still is way more realistic and serious. However, the story could have been a lot better, but anyways nothing is perfect. Finally, yeah Pixy is a REAL boss; it took me like 10 times to beat him, while akula, well 1 and he was gone =)

Completely ignoring every one else and the only way to kill certain leaders is to go into DFM and fly through a scripted event and only at the end of the event are they no longer invincible and the thousands of rounds of machine gun fire you've already pumped into them starts to take affect. And the plot is the usual "OH TEH NOES RUSSIANS HAVE A (Inserts weapon here) AND PLAN TO BLOW UP AMERICAZ!!!11!one!!) , I miss Strangereal, I miss competent ACE's, ....
I'm got this game and I found myself immediately going back to ACE 6 and ZERO, Recharging heath in Ace Combat? WAT. How the hell does that even work is your fighter jet made of nano machines? I mean it's like they looked at COD and said "HEY THATS A GOOD IDEAL GUYZ, RITE?" At least in FPS I can lie to myself and say they're shooting Jam bullets. And the last battle against Markov is just constant leapfrogging with DFM. The AI is brain dead and you only have to go after the leaders...
i love this game and i dont have to many problems with it except that you almost have to go into DFM mode, which i like it but the game makes it almost neccessary to do this in order to get one kill, and the story is a little blan, but not to bad, i also miss the alternate reality they had, but its nice to have a change.
8. You have to download aircraft like the SU-37 Terminator and and F-155/MTD through Live and Network which is a waste of money.
9. The Free Missions are a joke and the scoring is ridiculous.
10. No after battle statistics aka seeing how many air/ground targets you destroy.
11. Can't give wingmen orders and when you are under fire, they say they are coming to help you out, but in the end, they don't. They sit around and watch you get shot.
7. The Foxhound is a useless aircraft. Why would you WANT to use it?
8. You don't HAVE to. They're nothing special.

If the Mig-31 isn't a good plane for dogfighting, then why was it used in the game? Hmn? The Mig-21 shouldn't have been added since it is out of service and can't stand a chance against the newest generations of fighters. Same goes for the F-4.
Well I would love to download the planes, but the SU-37 should be available in the campaign instead of in the downloads.

I don't need ASM to line me up for attacking ground targets. I just need to find my own attack route and take them down without having to fly to the pointless RP and hit the bumpers to engage in it, but of course it's the only way to earn points..
@MattKearneyFan3 The problem with the missions that had ground targets is that they *also had fighters you had to take out*. They can use DFM, you can't. That's what the multiroles are for.
And cry me a river about ASM, why don't you. It reloads your weapons faster and makes your gun overheat more slowly.
This game is a lot of Fun, I love DFM and I agree that the game forces you to master DFM in order to progress. I have been an AC fan Since AC5 and I like the shift to more of a real world campaign (No more flying battleships or flying down the barrel of a giant rail gun) The music made you feel like a badass and the new multi-player modes are pretty good.

are you limited as to how to fly the plane or are you still allowed to do tricks? in a lot of the videos that I have seen the flight technique looks extremely novice
balls . . in DFM you have no control over your plane . . . . you bounce off buildings and water . . controls are messed up . . OPTIMISED dosent let you roll your plane . . this game is a disgrace to the Ace combat series . . . but the reviewer wont know that cause he hasnt played them
I didn't like the game, i know it's an arcade style game but it's to accade like. you can't barrel roll to chase enemies, and i find myself fighting with the game itself to pursue enemies when recovering from a loop the enemy will turn one way but the games mechanics try to auto right the plane the other way sometimes, overall good but not my favorite of the ace combat games.
DFM made the game to damn easy. Maybe I'm wierd but I like the Ariel dance of a dogfight, not this easy mode where you just have to get close to an enemy and shoot 'em up. The problem of past games and the "10 minute dance" as you put it could be solved simply by making the enemy pilots realistic, and not the superhuman, laws of physics screwing computers that are always in fighter based games. I gave this game a 1 out of 5. It looks good, and has a good soundtrack, but not much else.
just got the game . I am a big ace combat fan and just found time to play it. The Dogfighting mode is boring as hell!!! It should be a choice to enter DFM but this fucking game MAKES you do it every time! The fight control feels wrong, the graphics suck when you are close to the ground and it seems like you are invincible to ground buildings. You don't feel like an ace at all...just madly pressing buttons. They actually expect you to pay for colored variants of the plane!
Well, I tried the demo of this game at my local Gamestop, and was slightly put off by it.
I've played the other Ace Combat games, and I found the DFM a bit annoying. I'm used to flying my plane the way I want to shoot down enemy aces... I found just following them around too easy. If you're an Ace Combat veteran, you'll probably hate it.
But when I did have control of the plane, I was just owning the computer. I wanted to check the difficulty setting... lol. Didn't have time too though.
@terrywest111 I reckon it's pretty cool, and that's coming from an oldschool Ace Combat player (Belkan War is favourite). And if you didn't know, enemy ace's are scripted to not take damage until in DFM. So, you can engage DFM and then back out so you can take them out the 'old way'. But hey, that's just my view on the game.
I personally don't mind the scripted DFM mode because it reminded me a lot about star fox 64 (my first star fox game before playing the original during the gamecube days). I liked the demo and am heavily considering getting this. I think I'll start with this then move on to ace combat 5 and zero, if possible if I can get them before Soul Caliber V.
I won't lie, although the graphics are amazing, and I approve of the idea of adding more diversity. However as an Ace Combat fan I loved trying to out manuveur the ace's and with the DFM you can't. The radar is more than useless. I think it could of been amazing, but please can we have the option to turn the stupid "lets make it possible for the people who don't know how to fly planes to see cool cinimatics" off. It's like the best bits of the game are played out by DFM :(
it would be like playing a racing game where every time you go to overtake the computer takes over, it goes to another view, and the game shows the manvoeur in a cinematic form, which is pre determined by the game developers. All you are controlling is the camera angle. Kinda takes the fun out of it.

You're an absolutely amazing reviewer. You should replace IGN and Gamespot. Honestly, I have played all of the Ace Combats up to this one. Although it does have its flaws, this game makes my heart pound at every dog fight. It actually seems like your enemies know how to fly their planes unlike the last Ace Combats. The aces are BRUTAL! Especially on the hardest difficulty. Keep up the good reviews!!!
I got Ace Combat 6 for Christmas back in '08, and It still hasn't worn its replay value... especially if you play Star Wars music in the background. :)

Only prob I had with the dogfight mode was it's way too scripted. I unloaded 9 missiles into an enemy ace but they were wasted as it was destined to crash into the same billboard every time and the dogfight mode simply needed me to go that way.

Right about one thing- its not ace combat. I had my doubts, especially when they said "Call of duty in the air is under selling it (I like CoD, but that stuff needs to stay out of Ace Combat)." Still, I picked up my pre-order with a glimmer of hope. DFM was fun...at first. Campaign was nothing to write home about, and multiplayer lost its glam when it was just one DFM fight after the next. DFM was flashy and cool, but quickly lost its charm after the first 50 times. I traded mine in for Skyrim.

In my opinion, the only issues of the game are the story, it could have been way better, but nothing is perfect; the final boss, which is veery easy; and the multiplayer servers and lobby, they should make them like modern warfare 3 becuase they have some issues, sometimes it takes a looong time to find a match.

@gmanhalflife I played the game and in my opinion is waay better than its predecesors in therms of script. I KNOW its the typical america vs russia but still is way more realistic and serious. However, the story could have been a lot better, but anyways nothing is perfect. Finally, yeah Pixy is a REAL boss; it took me like 10 times to beat him, while akula, well 1 and he was gone =)

Completely ignoring every one else and the only way to kill certain leaders is to go into DFM and fly through a scripted event and only at the end of the event are they no longer invincible and the thousands of rounds of machine gun fire you've already pumped into them starts to take affect. And the plot is the usual "OH TEH NOES RUSSIANS HAVE A (Inserts weapon here) AND PLAN TO BLOW UP AMERICAZ!!!11!one!!) , I miss Strangereal, I miss competent ACE's, ....

I'm got this game and I found myself immediately going back to ACE 6 and ZERO, Recharging heath in Ace Combat? WAT. How the hell does that even work is your fighter jet made of nano machines? I mean it's like they looked at COD and said "HEY THATS A GOOD IDEAL GUYZ, RITE?" At least in FPS I can lie to myself and say they're shooting Jam bullets. And the last battle against Markov is just constant leapfrogging with DFM. The AI is brain dead and you only have to go after the leaders...

i love this game and i dont have to many problems with it except that you almost have to go into DFM mode, which i like it but the game makes it almost neccessary to do this in order to get one kill, and the story is a little blan, but not to bad, i also miss the alternate reality they had, but its nice to have a change.

If the Mig-31 isn't a good plane for dogfighting, then why was it used in the game? Hmn? The Mig-21 shouldn't have been added since it is out of service and can't stand a chance against the newest generations of fighters. Same goes for the F-4.
Well I would love to download the planes, but the SU-37 should be available in the campaign instead of in the downloads.

This is the worst game ever..Reasons?
1.Doing a remake of the series and making it real world instead of fictional.
2.Storyline is a joke. A guy loses his wife and starts a war to seek revenge? Boo..
3. Missions limit you with only specific aircraft.
4. SP weapons are not as good and the game doesn't have some of the best like the FAEB.
5. No return line to let you reload/switch out SP weapons.
6. DFM and ASM does everything for you and it's the only option to take down the enemy and score point

I don't need ASM to line me up for attacking ground targets. I just need to find my own attack route and take them down without having to fly to the pointless RP and hit the bumpers to engage in it, but of course it's the only way to earn points..

This game is a lot of Fun, I love DFM and I agree that the game forces you to master DFM in order to progress. I have been an AC fan Since AC5 and I like the shift to more of a real world campaign (No more flying battleships or flying down the barrel of a giant rail gun) The music made you feel like a badass and the new multi-player modes are pretty good.

I didn't like the game, i know it's an arcade style game but it's to accade like. you can't barrel roll to chase enemies, and i find myself fighting with the game itself to pursue enemies when recovering from a loop the enemy will turn one way but the games mechanics try to auto right the plane the other way sometimes, overall good but not my favorite of the ace combat games.

DFM made the game to damn easy. Maybe I'm wierd but I like the Ariel dance of a dogfight, not this easy mode where you just have to get close to an enemy and shoot 'em up. The problem of past games and the "10 minute dance" as you put it could be solved simply by making the enemy pilots realistic, and not the superhuman, laws of physics screwing computers that are always in fighter based games. I gave this game a 1 out of 5. It looks good, and has a good soundtrack, but not much else.

just got the game . I am a big ace combat fan and just found time to play it. The Dogfighting mode is boring as hell!!! It should be a choice to enter DFM but this fucking game MAKES you do it every time! The fight control feels wrong, the graphics suck when you are close to the ground and it seems like you are invincible to ground buildings. You don't feel like an ace at all...just madly pressing buttons. They actually expect you to pay for colored variants of the plane!
Mission is boring.

Well, I tried the demo of this game at my local Gamestop, and was slightly put off by it.
I've played the other Ace Combat games, and I found the DFM a bit annoying. I'm used to flying my plane the way I want to shoot down enemy aces... I found just following them around too easy. If you're an Ace Combat veteran, you'll probably hate it.
But when I did have control of the plane, I was just owning the computer. I wanted to check the difficulty setting... lol. Didn't have time too though.

@terrywest111 I reckon it's pretty cool, and that's coming from an oldschool Ace Combat player (Belkan War is favourite). And if you didn't know, enemy ace's are scripted to not take damage until in DFM. So, you can engage DFM and then back out so you can take them out the 'old way'. But hey, that's just my view on the game.

I personally don't mind the scripted DFM mode because it reminded me a lot about star fox 64 (my first star fox game before playing the original during the gamecube days). I liked the demo and am heavily considering getting this. I think I'll start with this then move on to ace combat 5 and zero, if possible if I can get them before Soul Caliber V.

I won't lie, although the graphics are amazing, and I approve of the idea of adding more diversity. However as an Ace Combat fan I loved trying to out manuveur the ace's and with the DFM you can't. The radar is more than useless. I think it could of been amazing, but please can we have the option to turn the stupid "lets make it possible for the people who don't know how to fly planes to see cool cinimatics" off. It's like the best bits of the game are played out by DFM :(

You're an absolutely amazing reviewer. You should replace IGN and Gamespot. Honestly, I have played all of the Ace Combats up to this one. Although it does have its flaws, this game makes my heart pound at every dog fight. It actually seems like your enemies know how to fly their planes unlike the last Ace Combats. The aces are BRUTAL! Especially on the hardest difficulty. Keep up the good reviews!!!
