  • Hi The bike came from Canadian Tire- $599 on sale.. the TAV you can get from various places- have to look around and check EBAY. I think Pep Boys in the States sells the Baja too

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Good vid but can i ask where you got it and for how much??

  • i have this exact one but it doesnt start any idea of wats wrong it been sittn for a yr or 2.

  • im 350 lbs and fet 68KM/Hr with a 60 tooth rear sprocket so should be zero issues for u

  • I weigh 170 will this go 40 mph with tav

  • when i look up torq a veter many different kinds come up can you tell which one i need for my mini baja bike

  • thanks for the video

  • what is all the info to buy one? i think i need to know the chain size how to i know what size it is?

  • @realhockeyman15 Hi Please read previous messages I have answered this several times.. join the minibajaownersgroup o yahoo groups

  • i have a modded mini baja. same frame as this one and everything just with a swapped 6 hp tecumseh, a comet tav-2 torq a verter, and im thinking about turning it into a trike with rear suspension. this thing moves quick, everytime i takeoff it jerks and trys to wheelie, but i dont let anyone ride it anymore my uncle in law crashed today tore off the front mud guard footpeg and tav2 cover

  • is it a 10 tooth sprocket or 12

  • @secretasianman840 Hi I have a 10 tooth on the TAV and a 60 tooth (non stock) rear sprocket- The original is 50 tooth and way too fast for trail riding- on road OK but to climb either get a 60 tooth rear or the easier way is to order a 9 tooth for the TAV end. Unfortunately Comet is now out of buisness so parts are an issue. There are some other manufacturers now of the same product out there.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • I'm just wondering do you sell Baja Motorsports Mini Baja? And will they have the TAV, and front breaks installed?

    Thank you

  • @minacan121 Hi No sorry I just modified my own, I don't sell them

    Cheers

    Dave

  • how did you get the speedometer to work. i bought one for a bicycle but you need to put a magnet on the spoke which this doesn't have. did you buy one for a bike? or a special one

  • @realhockeyman15 Hi I made a bracket and sttached it to the hub on the far side of the brake (I have an additional rear drum brake wheel ounted on the front) To see how its done in detail- join the yahoo group "minibajaownersgroup" and you will be able to look at all the various ways its been done.. more pics of my bike are there. you can reach me there as cpc1100scoper

    Cheers

    Dave

  • what kind of converter do you need? there are 4 kinds

    whats the model number

  • hey i have a couple questions,i have the same bike i would like to know where you got the front break, speedo and tourque converter thanks much apreciated

  • Hi All the details are in previous replies.. I have answered these at least 4 times. Unfortunately the torque converters (Torq-averter) Were made by Comet Industries, now out of buisness, another company may offer them soon)

  • hey so when do they come back and when they do contact me and if you can find me on personal message me the site please i really really need one

  • i have that exact same bike

  • I just found out that Comet ,the maker of the Tav2 converter has went out of business and every site I searched for today is out of them. I need a 3/16thx 2 1/4' key for the jackshaft on my baja.....any ideas?

  • Any hardware store has square keys for a few cents.

  • thanks, as a matter of fact ,a neighbor had told me just that and I have a about a foot of the stuff now...thanks for the info ...

  • how do you install a torque converter?

  • Read past posts and join the minibajaownersgroup on yahoo..all answers and tutorials are there

  • Some mount onto a jackshaft. Otheres have a bracket that mounts to the 4 holes on the engine case.

  • oh alright tnx

  • Also, its not a constant velocity transmission. Its a constantly VARIABLE transmission

  • Why isnt ANYONE using punctuation? 5 line sentences? DO NOT adjust the governor without REMOVING it completely. If the engine revs higher then it was ment to, the governor can break inside the engine cause all sorts of damage.

  • Comment removed

  • Vmax, i was saying that to henshalldood. He did not use one single punctuation mark. Sorry you think im a moron. Im not here to insult anyone. Im just trying to get the idea across that punctuation does matter. Read his post outloud without stopping, the way it should be considering there is no punctuation. You shouldnt be out of breath after reading a youtube comment. ANYWAY. Sweet bike, i just got a DB30 and put a modded 6.5 in it. Im pushing about 10hp. Way faster then i ever imagined.

  • My bad , you are correct on all accounts. I guess I see many on here that go crazy about grammar and punctuality in a post . I do apologize ...

  • Hey, thanks. I appreciate it. No one one youtube ever has manners and apologizes. Thanks. keep spreading the good-ness around the net.

  • if u want it to go a little faster there is a spring connected to a lever with a hook it it that is underneath the real gas tank it makes it go at least 5 mph faster and for cool sound take off the wimpy exhaust pipe thats what i did and it goes even faster but since my chain broke i just need to buy me one of them torque averters from comet or somethin

  • Comet went out of business. Torque converters are no longer made. Parts are still available however.

  • if you are a member of the "minibajaownersgroup" then look in the photos section.. they are all there... if not... join the group and Pete will approve you right away...

    Dave

  • how to i get to the tutorials on yahoo groups..( ps.. i am allready a member) and i hav questions about the tav2 or aftermarket parts 2 make it faster

  • Hey dragunslayer i resently requested to join your mini baja owners group and in the discription i wrote what you said not to wright which was interested in minibaja or just got oneindicates you did not read this introduction and you will not be granted a membership in the Yahoo Minibaja group.

  • Yo i wanted to get into Dirt Biking , Well not so much Dirt Biking just like riding on Streets paths trails shit like that , So i was wndering is the Baja Heat a good bike for me ? because i want to know if it will be good im 140 pounds and 5 foot 5 soo can u let me know if this will be good shit terible ok man thanks

  • The bike is fine.. I am 6'-2 and 350 so if it can drag my ass around.. it can your's

  • Comment removed

  • i have the same bike can you tell me what you used for the front brake

  • Just adjust the idle screw higher- its right by the throttle rocker on top of the carb- Join the yahoo group all can be helped there

  • hey does anyone that owns one of these ever have a problem with the bike ideling too low? like it wants to die at low speeds or if you are going full speed or even half speed then you go to slow down and it wants to like die so you have to rev it? anyone have that problem? i do. please respond!

  • easy install- NO

    more involved install- YES

Join the Yahoo group and look at the tutorials

  • so you have to drill new holes?

  • i have the 2009 version that one looks so different from the one i have

  • Anytime! .. I urge ANYONE that owns one of these to join the group.. a huge wealth of info and experience there... if its possible.. we have already done it!!

    Dave

  • Yes it still uses the chain.. join the yahoo group "minibajaownersgroup" and look at the tutorials all will be revealed tere are a few different ways to install the TAV. We can answer all questions there...

    Cheers

    Dave

PS No extra holes need drilling

  • I joined the minibajaownersgroup its sweet theres so much stuff on there its so worth signing up its awesome thanks dave

  • hey is it easy to intall do you have to drill ny new holes and do you still use the chain to spin the back wheel and how hard is it to install? please respond i really need to know iam thinking about geting one

  • Hi.. Starting out there's little difference to the stock clutch.. it will start as slow as you want depending on throttle opening. There is no resistance at the back wheel when you spin the back wheel, it free wheels just like the stock arranegement.. remember its still centrifugal clutch so its totally disengaged unless you spin it fast enough for the clutch to start grabbing.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Thanks so much for the response. I'm working on a special purpose winch and needed to know about the TAV2 in actual use and your info helped to answer those questions. Appreciate it!

  • 2 Question if you don't mind:

    1) Can you still start out very slowly if you wish to while using this torque converter, or do you find that it ONLY wants to take off fast? I need something that will also allow me to start out very slowly on occasion and was hoping the TAV2 would work.

    2) If you try to spin your back wheel while the torque converter while the engine if off, how easily does it spin? Is there any resistance from the torque converter mechanism if you try to spin the wheel?

  • @AviationDad its just going to take off fast. i have the tav2 also and whenever i hit the gas it jerks and the front tire lifts a few inches off the ground thats the purpose MORE TORQUE

  • i have the baja heat and whenever i try to pull start it it pulls back almost pulling my arm out of the socket. Can anyone help???

  • join the Yahoo minibajaownersgroup group and ask there.. someone will know immediately

    I do not myself.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Sounds like the engine timing is wrong, be carefull as you could injure yourself badly from trying to start it by hand. Might be that the flywheel has moved on the crank and its igniting the spark before the piston reaches the top of the cylinder TDC, causing the engine to "kick back" (spin around the other way). Take it to an expert or find out how to fix it yourself.

  • thank you so much.

  • No problem :)

  • there cheap i bought mine for 500 and the steel motor plate broke not the weld the steel the clucth keeps going

  • no problems with mine!... and I know dozens with no problems either...I am way above its rated weight limit for the rider.. yet it works great and again no issues... every product may have the occasional "friday" unit.. for 500 what u expect?

  • if u want to make it eaven faster take off the front ender the fake gas tank and the bak fender i flipped myne so i took them off and it made a huge difference

  • yeah but then it will look goofy and spray you with goo whenever you get into dirt

  • I doubt 20 pounds, if that will make any noticable difference. If you think that small amount of wight matters, dont ride with a full tank of fuel, fuel is heavy,

  • read the responses earlier I have answered this a few times with part numbers.. call comet and ask for a local dealer

    Dave

  • where can you get the torque converter?

  • it all depends on the type of install you do.. I have seen 3 specific different ways...Mine being the most elaborate. Join the yahoo group minibajaownersgroup and all questions will be answered including loads of tutorials and photos

  • Thank you for the link I have been trying to fidn some advice on modifications to mine

  • You are welcome.. hope you join the Group..I am there frequently if you need assistance.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Could you let the moderator know Northerbrewerca is waiting for permission to join?

Have you ever tried to mount the Chinese

    21 / 7 / 8 tyres on the stock Baja rim?

Have you considered the Tillotson HL carb as an upgrade for the stock Chinese .

I bought mine with a blown engine for a song at the dealer I have Jin Dong engine ( from god knows what but was free ) and the vibration reminds me of an atomic jack hamer, resonates. Need some vibration attenuation any thoughts?

  • How long did it take to install the converter? and is it hard? cause I'm trying to do the same to mine

  • nice bike but you dident need to buy the tak because if you but about 6 holes in the exaust with a drill and cut the throttle stopper it goes about 45 but you have to have a zip tie to hold it back so you dont break the stopper and it works amazing,.

  • Then there wouldnt be much to see now would there??..

You get a nice one with the TAv thanks very much!

  • u need a belt cover

  • No...and no

    Join yahoo group minibajaownersgroup

all will be revealed there in pics and tutorials

    Dave

  • when u buy the torq o verter is there anything else u have to buy with it, and is it easy to install?

  • i shimmed the motor up 1and a half clears frame with ease but the exhaust is under the seat burnin up but my god is it faster. I can keep up with cars!

  • Nope... don't fill it too much....try replacing the gasket.. and join the minibajaownersgroup on Yahoo groups.. a store load of information, tweaks, tutorials etc......

  • yeah there is a fine line to the gas level have you had problems with the back tire mine went bad in a week was shaped like an egg. I ordered the tav cant wait got a new tire airing it up today no rear suspension uuuggghhhhh hard in the desert

  • PUNCTUATION!

  • Hey does ur gas cap leak mini does ??

  • Mine does

  • mine does

  • read previous posts and answers

I pain 249 canadian from a canadian distributor..call comet-hoffco and find a distributor in your area..part numbers on previous posts also..

    Good luck

    Dave

  • yo i got the same bike . where u get the Torque convertor . and how much ?????

  • join the yahoo group "minibajaownersgroup" all tutorials are there including my own----also read my earlier replies to people..i have said this numerous times..

    thanks Dave

  • Hey i am awaiting membership im doink let me in

  • join the Yahoo group minibajaownersgroup

There are lots of tutorials pictures and decriptions how to do this... there are a few different ways to install......

    Enjoy

  • Hey i joined the group and am awaiting aproval

  • I'm very interested in adding front brakes and speedo to my mini baja carbon. i got a torque a verter in rout. where can i find these mods?

  • ive heard people say its easier to lift the motor an inch or two that way you dont have to cut the torq a verter

  • How long does it take to install this? Do you have to drill holes in the plate & grind on the plate?

  • brilliant!!!

    thanks,

    Lance

  • Anytime!

    Dave

  • Well the bike you see above (mine) drags my ass around with absolutely no issues at all and I am over 350..So nuff said (I do have a 60 tooth rear sprocket so I have scads of torque. It climbs like a champ!!

  • whats? the max weight these can handle,,i bought my daughter the 96cc mini bike and i would like to ride with her.

    thanks.

  • ive got one, it's got enough torque to pull around just about anyone with no problem. As long as you're below about 280lbs it should be fine.

  • which bore size is recomended i checked your other coments you didnt say you said u recoment the 12 tooth but u never said the bore size it either 3/4" or 1"

  • The output shaft of the motor is 3/4" the driven sprocket needs to be 10 tooth 40/41 series chain #218353A is the comet number

    Cheers

    Dave

  • holy shit that was down to the nitty gritty there , thats a lot

  • You're welcome

    Dave

  • i have this its sick

  • how fast do u think it'll go w/ the torq-a-verter???

  • stock motor with 60 tooth rear sprocket

    39-40 mph

with stock motor and stock 50 tooth 46mph

    Dave

  • which specific torque a verter is it the comet one ? and if soo which type casue theres 4 choices to buy plz respond

  • read previous messages from me its all there ..thanks

    Dave

  • gonna buy one soon im 21 weigh bout 155 and never owned a real bike, just a japenese pocket bike the motor seized up in a month but i rode it day+night man that thing was fun theres one at checkers for 523$ so im thinkin on gettin it i live in arizona usa and close to the mohave dessert so wonderin stock if it would be able to own the rocky terrain and how fast ? maybe leave me a message on my homepage.

  • in stock form you can expect maybe 25 mph.. The TAV drastically increases this.. I would strongly recommend joining the minibajaownersgroup on yahoo groups.. I am there as cpc1100scoper theres everything there you could ever want to know about the Baja..cheers

    Dave

  • well i have a baja mini bike just like that and now im going to buy a TAV how much do you want for the bike

  • Well the bike is very low use... Spare front wheel and tire, Helmet, 4 sets of brake pads and a bunch extras..was asking $800 canadian thats with the Installed TAV (modified engine position) and 60 tooth rear sprocket, new 40 series chain, chain tensioner, spare 50 tooth sprockets (2) New and matched brake levers (2) speedometer etc etc... I have also added a regulator to electrical system to clamp the magneto output to max 14v

I am just north of Toronto

    Cheers

    Dave

  • thats a nice bike u got there. how much faster does it go know

  • Hi with the larger rear sprocket..my bike does 63km/hr which is over double the previous speed. I sacrificed a little speed for incredible climbing ability.

The Bikes for sale if your interested. complete with front brakes, taillight, spare parts aluminum foot pegs and much more.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • how much do you want? :)

  • I am located in Ontario Just north of Toronto..I was asking 800 canadian thats complete with TAV and install, front brakes, 3 spare sets of brake pads, new front wheel and tire, new brake levers, rear light, chain tensioner and 60 tooth rear (with spare 50 tooth sprocket), new 40 series chain (heavier than stock), voltage regulator installed and custom billet machined aluminum foot pegs, oh and speedometer- I am somewhat negitiable but I have over 1000 in the bike with all the upgrades-thx

    Dave

  • Its a bicycle speedometer..I answered this same question earlier. Bought it from canadian Tire..made by Raleigh...DO NOT buy the wireless one the engine ignition interferes with it.. buy the one thats wired. The magnet is attached to a small strut fastened to the front wheel hub (I have an additional rear wheel assembly on the front so I could add front brakes.)

The speedo works great and acts as an odometer as well..

Join the Yahoo minibajaownersgroup lots of info there and info on the speedo

  • Where did you get the spedometer and what does it hook to? Thanks

  • trust me join the yahoo group you will see all the info you need!!

    minibajaownersgroup

  • thanks a lot u really helped

  • if i put the TAV or TAV2 on do i need to buy a chain tensioner?

  • no..i did because I moved the motor and I wanted to .. see Yahoo group and see for yourself.. I cant say that enough

theres years of experience there and Lots of tutorials including my own

  • is that all the TAV2 is an aluminum back plate what dose that do dose it really make a difference?

  • the plate holds it all together.. strong and light and easy to work with... its the backbone of the drive

  • do u have to do any thing when u get the TAV to make it go 60k or can u just put it on the motor and that will make it go 60 or do u have to mess around with the gears and shit a have a stock mini baja if i just put the TAV on will it make it go around 60k

  • stock with TAv it will go faster than 60k

with 60 tooth rear it will STILL go faster than 60K... It literally almost triples speed with the 50 tooth rear..I recommend buying the 9 tooth driven gear to slow it a little- see past posts and the Yahoo group

  • another q? it says no welding on the package of the TAV is that true i also read that only 2 of the bolts fit onto the existing motor and he had to grind the TAV plate down will i need to do this? as well is it good if i use it for only off road or is it made for road driving more so?

  • Jin the Yahoo group already mentioned its all there I cant keep typing the same things over and over- 4 bolts hold it on ..Yes grinding required and yes you MAy have to cut the aluminum back plate depending on the installation you do ( see pics in group- many many to see)

  • The TAV is a fully variable transmission... good for ANYTHING.. road offroad..grass dirt..hills trails etc etc

Just makes the bike 3x what it was before the change out..Princess auto has spare belts if your in Canada

  • When accellerating the top of the chain is tight, during decelleration the bottom of the chain gets loose..due to chinese crappy manufacturing the sprockets arent perfect and theres loose spots and tight spots.. the tensioner stops the chain flopping around (My chain is longer because I moved the motor forward almost 2" thats 4-5" more chain

    DAVE

The tensioner was made from the existing one and a polyurethane roller off a dirt bike (new)

  • what dose the chain tensioner do i know it makes the chain tighter but what dose it do or help with?

  • whats the difference between the Torq-a-vert and the

    Torq-A-vert 2 or is there a difference?

  • Torq a vertor has a steel backing plate- being phased out

the TAV2 has an aluminum back plate and is easier to work with if you dont have a welder and steel cutting tools...most use the TAV2, I did

    Dave

  • i have a mini baja 5.5 hp and am buying a tav is it ok to just pput it on with out doing anything and if anyone knows where to see vids on how to tweak it or install the TAV plz message back i really wanna make this go faster but am not sure what to do r the tires ok if i just put the TAV on or do i need to do something plz someone help!

  • Tires are fine.. noones had issues

Join the Yahoo group and all will be answered

have mine upto 60-65 km/hr and no issues

    Dave

  • The 12 tooth would be way overkill.. you would have a lot of top end if your a light rider and only on level ground.. The 10 tooth is plenty of speed for the baja remember the cheap tires?.if I were you I would even consider a 9 tooth (they can build it with a 9 tooth) it will lower your top speed 10% but give you way more torque and climbig power... Stay away from 12 tooth.. you will also have clearance issues with the chain and the frame if you go that route (12 tooth)cheers Dave

  • hey. I am planning on buying a TAV2 and I'm not sure whether to get the 10 tooth or the 12 tooth. What is the difference?

  • hi i have 2 questions, 1. is the installation of the torque-a-verter hard, and would it work on the doodlebug instead of the minibaja,

    thanks

  • i have the same bike but stock may i ask where you got the spedometer and for how much

  • hello can you send me the info on the tav2 you bought. Like size, #, etc. I just want to make sure i order the right now

  • I very much doubt he will get that kind of speed...the 6.5hp motor just will not have enough power..ad more than likely the TAV will slip and not acheive the full overdrive with that kind of load. Your friend is ill advised to put a 33 toth on it.. if he wants more speed you can get a 12 tooth for the TAV far cheaper and easier to change than replacing the rear sprocket. Be careful at these high speeds you run a HIGH risk of the tires failing as they are no way near rated at that speed

    Dave

  • ohh ok.yeah it was mph.ok.and my friend is gonna get a 33 tooth sprocket.his dirtbike should go between 60 and 75mph once he does that.but it wont climb hills as good lol.

  • Just colour and stickers the bikes are the same otherwise

  • hey man what is the difference beetween the baja heat and the baja minibike u got? thanks

  • you said you got yours to do 65 down hill?my friend has a baja with the TAV installed, and we only got it to do 52 down a pretty steep hill.so how did you get yours to go that fast?

  • 65 down a VERY slight hill..and thats KM/hr

I have a 60 tooth rear sprocket..versus the stock 50 tooth making mine slower but able to climb very very well...

You're friend is likely talking Miles per hour

  • hey i was wonderin how much a brand new baja mini bike like u have goes for

  • thank you for all the info ,i found it very helpfull. keep up the good work

  • No its amazing for all speeds.. as its a torque sensing drive it will automatically gear down when the bike needs power to climb..I can climb 30 + degree slopes with ease...

In stock form its not a climber at all... because as the RPM drops... the clutch slips..the TAV gears down to allow the motor to rev higher whiledriving the back wheel slower keeping the clutch nice and tight

    Cheers

    D

  • thanks

  • so is having a tav good 4 off roading or just high speeds

  • It isd a clutch and fully variable transmission- adjusts with torque load.. very neat drive.. its all u need that and a motor..

    Dave

  • does the torq convertor work as a cluctch or do you still need a clutch

  • They are pretty much universal.. all of these industrial utility engines have flat threaded areas around output shaft to put a power take off device...

So I would say YES!..Enjoy.. you can always contact Hoffco- Comet and ask them!...

  • can you put one of those torq avertors on any 6.5 engine ?

  • You can get a little out of it with adjusting high speed screw but the motor is governed. removing the Gov will speed it up but you risk the motor.

The TAV over doubled the speed from 25-30 to over 60 ..I have had it maxed on slight downhill at 65 before I ran out of space..

With stock gearing you can get 45-50 MPH out of it with relative ease with the TAV addition..makes it a totally different bike! and scads more fun

    Cheers

  • That would be 25-30 KM/hr and over 60 KM/hr max I get now is 65 KM/hr

Some guys wind them out to 50 MPH

    Dave

  • hello i have one is there eney way you can ajust the speed like on a quad cuz it only goes 25 mph stock speed is there eney bolt ineed to turn to make it go faster or do i just need to buy upgrade

  • Basically the clutch in stock form eats horsepower as does the pokey chain drive.. the TAV is a fully variable transmission (infinite adjustability through its range)it adjusts to the max speed it can give you with the torque load the bike has..more torque required, the higher the ratio.. the less torque (like a straight away) the ratio lowers to give you max speed at he back tire

its a gas ... quite , relaiable and gobs more power to the back wheel

    Dave

  • hello i have one is there eney way you can ajust the speed like on a quad cuz it only goes 25 mph stock speed is there eney bolt ineed to turn to make it go faster or do i just need to buy upgrade

  • what was the speed stock. do u think it was ok stock or did it definatly need upgrade?

  • how fast does the baja go

  • Mine does 64 km/hr faster downhill... they can go much faster but mine is geared for some climbing as well as speed

  • Is the front brake a disc brake or drum? How much does the brake cost?

  • Read my earlier reply the brake is a drum brake.. actually a new rear wheel put onto the ront with a custom bracket to hold the brake shoe holder to the fork. added a new lever and the same cable as the back one on the bike.. basically its the rear brake setup addded to the front... identical..works perfect

  • Look on EBAY a seller "sr" sells parts for baja dirt cheap.. he can supply a wheel/brake assembly.

    D

  • Does the mini baja use a 3/4" crankshaft and #35 chain? Thanks

  • Hi..the Baja has a 3/4" shaft and uses 40/41 10 tooth sprocket.. if I were you I would get a 9 tooth sprocket as well (extra cost) to gear it down a bit. The chain that comes on the bike is a 41 series chain...but the TAV will use either 40 or 41 chain..(I changed my rear sprocket to 60 tooth and the heavier 40 series chain (40 and 41 are both 1/2" pitch but the 40 is a 1/16" wider than 41

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Did you install a universal front brake kit (what brand is it)? Did you have to modify the front wheel hub at all, such as cutting some of the material off? Are the brakes hydraulic?

  • The front brake is the same as the back brake,,, bought a rear wheel and brake assy and mae a custom bracket... so basically mine has 2 back wheels... brakes are fantastic.. go to bajaownersgroup on Yahoo groups..join and tutorials and pics are all there for you

    Cheers

    Dave

  • how did you put the speedometer on

and at what store did you buy the torque a verter
