  • Silly question, but I'm curious...what pen are you using in this video? lol sorry....other than that, thanks for posting this video...i was considering learning this system so when I go back to med school I can keep up with the profs lol

  • God, this video makes it look so easy....

Personally I prefer Handywrite but it always feels weird using it, as it's made by speakers of American English. Being British, it's hard for me to transcribe sound like the 'o' in 'hot', because to me it's not the same as the 'a' in 'father' like it is in (most accents of) the North American Englishes.

  • @jamesS0289 it's like the 'o' in 'soft' or 'nor' or something like that, right? I used to have the same problem in reverse when I would buy old used books from the 50s that taught another language like Greek...the pronunciation guide would always be based on British English...not that there's THAT much difference, but we do pronounce words differently...that negatively affected my ability to learn the langauge appropriately.

  • In your opinion, what is easier to learn, Gregg or Handywrite? I find Handywrite easier.

  • What exactly are you using to play the voice? A website or program of some sort that is used to practice shorthand? I would love to know so I could do the same for when I practice. I guess I could just google it. :P

  • How difficult is it to learn shorthand?

  • can u teach us this?

  • I've been looking around, and I can't find an answer, but can Handywrite Shorthand be used to take notes without LATER transcribing them to longhand? That's something I really can't find anywhere....

I really like this video btw. I congratulate you on getting 100wpm. The video is a tiny bit blurry, but still very good. :D

  • @Mtangel16 This is one thing I prefer Handywrite for; you don't need to transcribe them to longhand because all information needed to read the words are already there. You don't need to use dictionaries or memorize ideographs. you could read something you wrote years ago as if you wrote it today.

  • I am trying to learn shorthand right now. I'm a college student and I take tons of notes...professors speak fast, you can't afford to NOT try to learn it...

  • nice job

  • i am learning pitmans shorthand now, and the trouble that annoys me is the silent e at the end of words that ur brain tricksu into accidentally adding

  • Can you easily read what you have written? What has made you choose learning Handywrite over mainstream Gregg? Thanks.

  • I do Pitman shorthand and I have certificates for 140 wpm. I am now nearly 60 and although still working, no longer use shorthand on a daily basis but it's certainly a skill worth learning.

We may live in a technological world but sometimes old skills are still sought after. When there is a power failure, computers stop working - but my pencil still whizzes across the pages of my notebook!

  • Pencil tip breaks... aww ****!

  • short hand is a lost art in the 60's people when take notes in shorthand in court hearing i mean it goes way back very lost art

  • Me and Mom are watching these now

    Love that table

  • p.s. how do I find "IhaveaKugelschreiber" 's video?

  • This is one of the more impressive things I have seen!

I am an afficionado of Gregg shorthand, but I'm definitely a lightweight with little aspiration beyond Gregg as an art form.

What I would like to know is if one can obtain a drawing pad and stylus plus software that can be used to write Gregg shorthand and transmit it to another user in real time.

Do you know of anyone who has looked into this possibility?

Thanking you in advance for your kind reply,

    Your devoted fan,

    Jeff Leer

  • Thank you for the kind words!

There are tablet computers available and shorthand can be written on them fairly easily. However, I don't know if there is such a program to transmit. See "IhaveaKugelschreiber" 's video for a tablet-written Gregg example.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has that as a possibility but it would be excellent if we Gregg-writers could initiate something!

    Thank you,

    Brian

  • Thank you Brian,

when the thread begins here somebody is amazed at what you accomplished in 3 mos.

    what are they talking about?

is this how long it took you to learn Gregg?

also how old are you? your hands look like you were born to write shorthand.

    Best, Jeff

  • @ocergnairb Opencanvas is a drawing program that uses networking. Too bad I don't have a tablet I enjoy using :P If you do this you might want to use a networking tool like Hamachi.

  • @gharialas As I am not ocergnairb, I can't say for sure if he could teach it to you, but it's something you can teach yourself pretty easy. :p I've recently started learning how to write in handywrite and would recommend the fallowing website as a start. It's a bit challenging at first, then it just sticks in you mind. ;P

As I'm also learning handywrite, feel free to pm any cool sites you guys find on the subject. :p

To get to the site, just google "Alysian Handywrite." It's the first result. ^^

  • @ocergnairb I think OpenCanvas, which is free, would work. The version 1.1 has network connection functionality.

  • By the way, ocergnairb, following our previous discussion I revised my 3-part video on Pitman Shorthand, gave it a snappier title sequence, and now it is much clearer, the paper at its whitest like a bleach commercial, lol!

  • Hello -

    Cool; I'll check it out!

    -Brian

  • Wow, that is pretty impressive. I guess now is the time to start retracting my statements about how bad Handywrite is!!

Although who knows, if challenged by a system like gregg, you might be able to fly at a record speed. The greatest praise of your skill is that you have nearly no pauses between words. It means that outlines come readily to your mind.

    Good work

  • Thank you very much!

Unfortunately, because I've been kind of stuck at this speed, I haven't practiced in awhile.

I've gotten slower now; however, I think I could easily pick it back up.

  • Getting stuck is natural. It always happens and those that push through it are the ones that really get fast.

I sincerely recommend you go for gregg anniversary. All the material (and theres lots of it) is available online, and you'd be able to fly with that system. In the end, this system is loosely based on Gregg, so the adjustment won't be too huge. The longer you delay the harder the adjustment will be.
