  • beautiful fiddle playing and singing

  • Which groups or albums would people recommend if you are just looking for typically quintessential English music?

  • @jmsbk12345 You could try "Folk Songs of Old England" vol. 1 & 2 by Maddy Prior and Tim Hart of Steeleye Span. Good albums.

  • @jmsbk12345 I would recommend you check out Cecil Sharp who was a collector of British ballads (Cecil Sharp House, London), He was the equivalent of Francis Child (Child ballads) who collected ballads in the USA. They are both featured on utube. The best collections of British and USA ballads. Hope this helps.

  • There was a video, since gone, with barely mediocre sound quality, of an amazing version of this song 1997 with a great Woods/Prior performance.

I would consider that the best version of all time.

  • You are all too picky! Appreciate it for what it is. Pure and folksy, I think! Also takes me back to my youth - that becomes important! Mu x

  • I love all songs of Steeleye Span

  • And old favorite...

  • RIGHT Yees all odd! I like it but thats what makes the world go round ...... maybe see you in Hell!

  • atfatw secretly worships england and everything english. he begins his day on bended knee before a portrait of the queen. don't deny it atfatw, we know who you are.

  • @bwanna23 Whats wrong with being an anglophile? This band itself celebrates english folk songs.

  • How nice not to see some comment by that di*khead, atfatw. Hehehe.

  • rogerfluk,

I say old bean you are a nasty immature

poofy punk aren't you? ha ha

  • When i think back to the time when i was a young man and listening quite often to SES, i knew they were good. Now many years latter i realize they were quite exceptional at their craft.

  • Awesome! Maddy sang this when I saw her back in April. She's just as good!!!! Thanks for posting.

  • kickass performance!

  • P.S If you dont like this song, dont view it or comment on it...SIMPLE!

  • I'm thinking that in view of your comment, it'd be all right if I mentioned that I've been a fan of SS, especially Maddy Prior for over 30 years, and that I love this version of the song. Just having you on, tansbell...

  • this is the BEST version of this song that I have EVER heard!!!

  • This is an interesting version and one i have not heard. Love the acoustic guitar and slower tempo. thanks so much for posting this tune.

  • you many want to check out the live version of thomas the rhymer uploaded by nigihayahi 06-18-2008...its much more upbeat!

  • R.J.Stewart is a Scottish feary seer and he plays the psaltry. He does a marvelous version of Thomas Rhymer but I have only heard it in person. He has recordings and did a lot of accompaniments with 1960's and 70's British folk musicians Maybe he is online someplace with that.

  • I'm sorry, but I really hate this version.

It ruined the beauty of the song.

  • Perhaps you could name a version you like better so we could check it out? I like to hear as many versions as I can of my favorite tunes.

  • I've been trying to find one with the traditional tune, the child ballad version.

But I can't seem to find one on Youtube, all I can find is this horrible cover.

  • @OrlopRat42 Steeleye Span have released at least 4 versions of Thomas through the years; 'Now We Are Six' (long version) in the UK, 'Now We Are Six' (short version) in the US, at least one live version, and a new one on 'Present - The Very Best of Steeleye Span'.

Most people are familiar with the short version from Now We are Six that was released as a single. It has a sharper intro and more edgy rock beat - you'll find it at: watch = D4IMtejYZgE

  • @OrlopRat42 Me too, prefer the original track with the deep bass.

  • @transferXmofts ........the version by Newfoundland singer Pamela Morgan is gorgeous (on her CD Ancestral Songs)...don't know if you can find it where you are but you will never hear the song the same way again

  • It is all about the music and it is all the better for being different have some of you never been to a concert where people don't lip sync this is a great version of a epic song.

  • If you can't turn crap into something useful how come gardeners always want maure for heir gardens?

  • Awesome song, crappy pictures. NO ONE can change my mind.

  • True. It's hard to change a lump of crap into anything useful.

  • 1.I'm afraid that the pictures were taken from the sleevenotes of the album.

2.You have to admit, the song itself is awesome.

  • No, they were NOT taken from the sleevenotes of the album, as far as I know. I don't even own the LP, I have it on CD. I found the images doing a Google image search for "Thomas the Rhymer". And even if they are, so what? I consider the images unimportant, I'm just presenting a tune for folks to listen to and hopefully enjoy. I'm not making a music video. It's the music that counts, not the pictures.

  • I already said that I like the song itself very much, thanks for adding!

  • But the chorus is kind of boring. Much more elaborated in the "Now we are six" version.

  • What album is the full version of this song on?

  • It's on "Present--The Very Best of Steeleye Span" which consists of new versions of earlier songs. Good album, worth getting.

  • So this is the new version then, yes? Must be because its a bit different than my Below the Salt version etc. Still excellent though. And its nicely extended....

  • ***oops. I meant to say 'Now We Are Six' album... Not 'Below the Salt'... I need another mead. haha...

  • Be careful here - the Shanarhi CD version of Thomas the Rhymer on "Now We Are Six" is not the same as the original, full length verion, which is on the Chrysalis UK LP record. However, the remaining tracks are the same.

  • Ok then... where can I find the original extended/full version on CD?? and while we are at it... what are your 3 most favorite Steeleye Span albums??? cheers!

  • You can find the full version of TTR (or True Thomas, as it is sometimes known) on "A Rare Collection 1972-1996".

Because there are so many anotholgies around, it is difficult to say which I prefer. However "Parcel of Rogues" and "Now We Are Six" both contain some of my favourites tracks". I'm not enamoured of "AA My Hat" & "Stookey" (a TV theme song).

  • Wonderful song. Thanks for posting!

  • this kind of melody make me feel relax...........

    its great...

  • And after True Thomas' Seven years in Fair Elfland, he wanetd homeward. The Queen then offered him a rare parting gift, but un-named, which Thomas did accept. She told him then, that her gift was a tongue that would never lie. Oh, did he try to graciously decline, but she said that what she gives, none can return. So True Thomas did homeward to this world, the most gifted troubador. His music had unearthly improved in Fair Elfland. But, Oh: 'Ware the questions you would ask of him!

  • Thank you for posting this superb work!

    Francis J. O'Reilly

  • Perdy.

  • I love the pictures you found! Love love love. Almost as much as I love Steeleye Span =)

  • Fantastic.
