MFJ-461 Pocket CW Morse Code Decoder

I own opne of these, and it works fairly well. The trick is to set it to where the LED is just flickering along with dits and dahs of the code. I don't recommend using the mic on the decoder, it doesn't work well. Your best best bet is to use a cable directly from the radio to the decoder. I mainly use the decoder to help me along in contests until I got my code copying speed up a bit. They work, at least mine does, but they do have their limitations.

I have found it useless on HF CW

I aver exactly with Tang. This device will read a computer soundcard producing CW, but that's about it. The mic is very insensitive, the fine-tuning controls are located on the back and are hard-to-adjust trimmers. I have not yet met anybody who has found this device useful. Basically the only CW you want help with is the CW this thing will never in a million years read. Unfortunately, I own one.

I just bought one used from ebay. Slapped in a new battery. placed the reader near the computer speaker and copied exactly to the tee the same message as w4inf sent. I'm impressed. Thanks.

Do indeed pursue CW, its is a lot of fun, and very rewarding! However the MFJ decoder is mostly junk. Search Google for CWDecoderXP, its freeware and works a LOT BETTER! GL & 73
