I really thought this was an effective and eye opening speech. I don't know much about the speaker, but I hope that other people see the effects of his words and that he continues to stand up for what is right.
If you really think your comment is worth anything, I believe video response is a better way. (Putting dignity, and power into your words by showing your face.)
Its kind of funny to see how different a student can get from a college education. When you have this guy when his great speech, and another guy who was complaining about being force to watch "Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore ....check out the "A Student's Mandatory 'Truth'
Wow, the comments on the speech are amazing to read and they show how idiotic some people can be. I was there for this guy's speech and I thought it was a very well-delivered and meaningful message. This person gives me hope that there are still people in the world who care about things. To all those who posted dumb comments about NYU and this speaker, why don't you actually describe what you don't like, instead of just name-calling? Your comments just make you look stupid.
This young man's speech gives me hope. Not much else does lately......
Education is the key to success and we need many more people like Marc in the world. We have become a nation of self-absorbed, game-playing morons with little social conscience. I long for the 60's and 70's. I worry about my children and grandchildren's future so. Apathy and ignorance will be our downfall. We deserve everything we get. Sad.
Unfortunately the future does look bleak, almost irreversible. Each one of us fortunate enough to know the issues at hand can only do their best to combat climate change and hope others do likewise. I wonder what would happen if the world population became whole-hearted Buddhists?
As I enter my freshman year of college studying Biology, I realize it's people like us that will save the earth and it's biodiversity. The people leaving the nasty comments on here are the shallow ones he mentions in his speech. I hope all you shallow narrow minded people open your mind up to see what is really happening around the world. As a christian and Republican, I realize these groups have ignored the environment and it's my turn to change that.
HIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER!!! BUT I LOVE MY MOM AND DON'T WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES! If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours
You could have easily talked about funny college experiences or made the usual jokes about using Wikipedia to write your papers, and you probably would have gotten a laugh. Instead, you chose an uncomfortable topic and you delivered it forcefully and convincingly through personal experiences. People will look back on this speech one day and realize how right you were to give this speech in the way you did. Outstanding!
It's about time someone actually said something in a commencement speech. Thank you for challenging students to face the problems of environmental degradation.
Authenticity, yes. Originality, definitely. What about courage? This speech demonstrates extraordinary bravery -- even in front of a mostly agreeable NYU crowd. I'm proud of you, Marc -- and hope that the rest of us have the grit and creativity to face this problem!
