Customers don't care about VW's past. They are in the market to buy a car for what it is, not it's history. This is reflected by VW's current success in this economic crisis. If Jeremy Clarkson says the cheaper R32 is a better and faster car than its BMW equivalent the 130i then I'm pretty the R32 is the better car. Why you would pay more for a car that has no room, is impractical and will probably have numerous reliability issues in the future? For example the E46 M3 is known widely to have numerous problems with gearboxes, diffs and engines. I wouldn't exactly call this a premium.
VW nowadays aren't just cheaper, they are as I said before for the most part better cars as seen by a recent influx of glowing reviews across the whole range. People aren't prepared to pay the "premium" anymore when there really isn't a premium.
First off, jeremy clarkson's opinion is just that, AN OPINION. There is no right or wrong in motoring, someone might like the BMW, someone might like the VW ( the most likely factor to make the decision is the buyer's budged limitations). The fact is that most people who buy BMWs buy them because they are logo whores, not because they need a fast car.
So when we have a bunch of people who just want to show off money(and everyone does this to some extent) they will most likely spit out the extra cash for the brand name. If someone wants a car that is faster then a GTI, they automatically have to look to another manufacturer. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that a BMW is any harder or more expensive to maintain then a VW, my sister's 05 golf has been through tons of problems in its lifetime.

BMW are having huge build quality issues atm particularly with running gear. Most of their components are outsourced, and the twin turbo in the 335 is new territory for BMW.

Customers don't care about VW's past. They are in the market to buy a car for what it is, not it's history. This is reflected by VW's current success in this economic crisis. VW has been extremely wise in the sort of cars they are producing and that is why people curently prefer them to BMW's. They are just better cars for the most part.

If Jeremy Clarkson says the cheaper R32 is a better and faster car than its BMW equivalent the 130i then I'm pretty the R32 is the better car. Why you would pay more for a car that has no room, is impractical and will probably have numerous reliability issues in the future? For example the E46 M3 is known widely to have numerous problems with gearboxes, diffs and engines. I wouldn't exactly call this a premium.

VW nowadays aren't just cheaper, they are as I said before for the most part better cars as seen by a recent influx of glowing reviews across the whole range. People aren't prepared to pay the "premium" anymore when there really isn't a premium.

First off, jeremy clarkson's opinion is just that, AN OPINION. There is no right or wrong in motoring, someone might like the BMW, someone might like the VW ( the most likely factor to make the decision is the buyer's budged limitations). The fact is that most people who buy BMWs buy them because they are logo whores, not because they need a fast car.

So when we have a bunch of people who just want to show off money(and everyone does this to some extent) they will most likely spit out the extra cash for the brand name. If someone wants a car that is faster then a GTI, they automatically have to look to another manufacturer. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that a BMW is any harder or more expensive to maintain then a VW, my sister's 05 golf has been through tons of problems in its lifetime.

What I said was that some people don't care about the speed and agility of a car because its almost impossible to legally use a car to its full potential in north america and so buying a fast car serves no further purpose then to show off that you can afford a car like that(some enthusiasts remain).

an evo x is a based on a proven rally race car. I don't think that the R32 has any "racing technology" like that of the evo x (not the fq400, I know, dont freak out, I'm just talking about the normal evo). I have never disputed that an evo x isn't a good car with racing technology. What I do know is that the evo that was pitted against the lambo in top gear wasn't an evo x and it was the FQ400 version of a previous evo (I think VIII or IX). And BTW how fuck did you start talking bout evos'? I never argued against them I just ridiculed your ridiculous comments whilst comparing BMW's and VW's. And please define "racing technology". I guess the brakes on an R32 could be based on racing technology.

Im glad that my ridiculous comment about BMWs and VWs served it's purpose.I started talking about evos because you were saying that a gti is better then a 130i in every aspect, I said that an evo would be an even better bang for the buck then the gti. My point is that there is always an alternative to a "premium" car, but people choose to buy them anyways because of the extra cache and cash. So in reality a "premium" segment is still very much alive because the market keeps it that way.

I never mentioned a GTI. I mentioned an R32. You then continued to claim that evos are better bang for the buck considering on top gear an evo beat a lambo. I then pointed out that this evo was a FQ400 which costs a lot more than a stock evo. BTW this wasn't an evo X. So realistically the more expensive evo x is no better bang for the buck than an R32 considering the whole package of luxury, relative comfort and performance you get in the R32.

I meant an r32...I'm sorry to have offended you. lol, I think I told you very clearly that I understood the fact that on top gear it wasn't an evoX, but I said that the evo x would sodomize a gti in a track(pardon all my references to violent sex). The bang for the buck is much higher in an evo x, first of all, it doesn't pretend to be something it isn't, it is a japanese care and is therefore much more reliable and easy to maintain then a R32, it also has a much higher resale value then a VW.

I can assure you the reliability and resale value of an R32 is first rate. In fact, in certain reviews I have read, the editors seem to believe that it one day will become a classic considering its limited production and VW's choice not to use the 3.2 anymore. Maintenance costs probably would go to the evo x but servicing for the R32 is at actually surprisingly cheap. And please elaborate on "pretty much everything else".

By racing technology I mean non-simplified technology that is used by a car company in actual organized races. No car company, including nissan, claims that their cars have racing technology, its an implied thing. for example, nissan is japans premier sports car maker so its no surprise that the car pwns pretty much every other sports car within $150000k in practicality and dynamics. the GTR is just a way for nissan to show off.

But if we put away all the value associated with a brand then I can name cars that would be better then the r32 at the same price. An evo x starts at around 40k and that car would rape the r32. And that car has rally "racing technology"(you like that phrase). Jeremy clarkson; which you seem to think of as an all knowing god who can be quoted as a reliable source and whose opinion is above all others, he tested the older evo against a lambo in a racetrack and it beat it, could an r32 do that?

Yeh that was a evo FQ400- a specially tuned evo in Britain with over 400 horsepower. That car costs a lot more than an R32 and the normal evo wouldn't stand a chance against the lambo. Let me list why you would buy an R32: It is fantastic long distance tourer, its luxurious, it's comfortable, it's a hoot to drive, it's fast and it sounds bloody brilliant and for all of this it is quite cheap. Evos and STis firstly are more expensive and none of the cars you mentioned are synonymous with luxury, comfort, practicality or refinement. The g35X was never designed to be an AWD and many reviews comment on its unwillingness to turn in and luckluster steering feel.
