I wonder if the 6 people who get rescued have anything to do with the 6 degrees of separation( meaning that everyone knows everyone else through 6 people or less). I don't know what this would have to do with the show but, lost does have an element of connection in it. A lot of the characters are connected and the writers have made it a point to show this.
