I have a hunch Fred Allen did by his line questioning - "Physical Activity? - Your very attractive......- "Do you work with a living creature?" (watch Daly's eyes flutter) "Would you consider this to be a dangerous animal?"... He knew....
Man, I wasn't even born when this show was on, but when I see the way the women dressed and styled their hair back then, it makes me wish these styles could make a comeback. Even the secretary, who's a bit plain-looking, looks great in that dress and hairdo.
Sometimes I have a feeling that they are hinted at if not completely familiar with the line of the contestant or the identity of the mystery guest for the way they choose to ask their questions. Still, WML is still highly entertaining and I love it!
I assume she was his secretary at ABC, where Daly was VP for News (as well as Evening News anchor). So there would be no reason for the panelists to know who she was.
@kxx46 Daly only did that after he left ABC in a huff in November 1960. He was furious that they started election returns an hour later than the other networks in order to run regular programming. After that, he continued to do WML on Sundays and whatever free lance work he could get the rest of the week.
The producers displayed a genius for casting. Dorothy's pointed questioning of panelists, amusing combativeness with Daly, New York sophistication, and love of the game still contrasts well against Arlene's warmth and wit in questioning. I watched WML Sunday nights 8:30 p.m. as a child. DK, AF, BC still seem like relatives, because they appeared at home weekly for years. I liked Dorothy best then as now. I loved to write. She wrote and got me interested in reading political news columns.
I find it fascinating if not reassuring that after 50 some odd years, WML still entertains viewers and viewers still get into discussions about Dorothy Kilgallen (bad cop) vs. Arlene Francis (good cop).
I expected more of a reaction from the panel here. In fact I found the whole clip a little flat. Perhaps that's because at a number of points WML was in danger of becoming the "Fred Allen Show". In fact, I really don't like it when the attention shifts to just one panellist for too long.
really? i love arlene she's just got that sparkle or should i say had?lol anyways dororthy had a really weird life dont ya think the wayshe died was supposed to be questionable?
I think many people are threatened by displays of intelligence and class, especially when those qualities emanate from a woman. But I've heard similar negative comments about Bennett Cerf and John Daly.
I have nothing but admiration for Dorothy Mae Kilgallen. I think it particularly noteworthy that she achieved such success in what was then very much a male dominated field, and at at a time when prejudices against women were so rampant.
I don't believe they don't know who this woman is. This is a coy little act! : )

Am I missing something, or did he genuinely mispronounce the name of his own secretary twice? I felt really embarrassed for him.
Bobstew68 1 year ago
@Bobstew68 I'm sure he did it to throw the panel off. If he's mispronouncing her name, why would they think he would know her?

@Bobstew68 it was an act to make them think he didnt know her lol

The panelists should have picked up on the clues early - like Daly mangling Miss Elson's name.

Delightful, and aided immeasurably by the frisson of her acquaintance with John. Thanks very much.

From other comments, it seems probable that Fred Allen was "fed" some of his questions.

I had forgotten he was at ABC.
He also , I found out, sometimes guest hosted "Today Show" on NBC when
Dave Garroway was away.
