The one that started it all... It's Wonder Boy! Simple arcade platforming by Sega and Westone (formerly Escape). You might as well consider Wonder Boy as Alex Kidd's spiritual twin since both series had drastically different sequels...
And let's not forget the three-way (sorta) licensing between Sega, Hudson and Westone. No other franchise had dealt with what Wonder Boy has gone through.
