  • Is he playing wrong?

    It says that the scale contains ACDEG notesbut he play's with 1st and 3rd finger which means that he hits 5th and 7th fret which is wrong because 7th fret is B note, not C...

    Or am I just dumb?

  • Because that is how this scale is built. That's the note before the key note. If you play blues in A, you start from G. Try to play solo listening to "queen of space" (eric clapton). You'll hear that it sounds nice ;)

  • keeps you in key when playing a lead. this is a basic map. there are more passing notes, but I'm sure he didn't want to make this a hard lesson to learn. it's a very good lesson. I've used this scale for years. you have to know what key you are in. like the key of D, is D,C,and G

    or the key of A like what he is teaching are the chords A,C,G the root note is the note the key is based around. start on the root and end on the root for starters. and learn your keys. try playing with backing tracks.

  • Okay i just have one question. would you locate A,C, G, D notes around the fret by moving them with octaves? Like how the c note is 8th fret low e, would you locate it again on 5th fret d string?

  • take this scale and move it around to the root note to the low E and you can answer your own question.

  • you have to know the first 12 frets on the low E the thickest string. from 1-12 are open is E, then F,F#,G,G#,A,A#,B,C,C#,D,D#,E. frets 1,2 3,4 5,6 7,8 9 10,11.12

    take this scale he is showing you,and move it where it apply's. he explains this in A, so now you should know how this works.he didn't explain the best places to bend though. try bending the G string, and also the high E string.then try hitting the 2 notes that came before it in the scale. also try sliding this scale.

  • okay let me see if i got this,, when i jplay in the key of A ,, and the cord changes to the D i just do the pattern in the D box? and then when it goes to E the E box.. and back to A ,,, is this how i would do lead in the key of A>?

  • Bugman63 no if you played a basic blues chord sequence with A, D and E they are all in the key of A so you would only play A blues pentatonic over the whole thing, e.g. Johnny B Goode is B pentatonic blues the whole way, over all the chords.

  • it always helps to try a new style and blend whatever your playing with it. Especially something expressive like jazz or flamenco or some funk

  • you can start on g and still be playing the a minor petatonic scale becasue A,C,D,E,G, are all the notes in the a minor pentatonic scale

  • good lesson,but i also think it'd be good to practice the higher end of the exercise using your 4th finger more,for exmaple using the 2nd and 4th fingers to fret the G and A note on the B string and C and D on the E string, to help get strength in the 4th finger and also to get you into the habit of using it instead of finding ways not to use it

    i have a fender music master from 1960's

    i got this when i was in grade school.

    what can a person play with one these?

    i think it only has 1 pickup on it.

    i have a matching fender tube amp that i got at the same time.

    i listen to rock, metal, blues and anything like it.

    i would like to try and play again.

    any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    i really dont feel like clapton flyies all over the neck...he is usually in one position..and he plays is still amazing at what he does....isent that worth people's respect more than anything ?? being able to stay in one position, and still be as they say "a guitar god" rather than having to fly all over the neck to get the same effect ????

    let me give you an example where he uses mutiple positions... wonderful tonight....

    the intro riff is played somewhere in the 12 fret position... the solo he does uses the 3rd fret position and 15 fret position...

  • no what i mean is he isent the type of player that flies all over the fretboard like lets say SRV...if you know what i mean...

    and to answer your question check out the layla solo...live...at the madison square garden.....

    there is a version of it here on youtube....

  • well....in the layla intro he plays the little bass melody.... thats one position....and then he plays the bass meoldy octives higher along with the lead....another position....and techniquely in the solo, he uses the expanded scale so thats another position... thats 3 positions he used in that song.

  • It seems to me like Clapton actually plays different shapes, though it's mostly first, second and third shape pentatonic stuff with some added notes. But i do agree with you that playing relatively simple stuff that still sound amazing is more impressive than shredding all over the neck.

  • LOL i was 10 at the time my next door niabor went to the same high school as i went to the same years later but Randy and him would play guitar together at the time Randy and Kevin and Kelly there was one more named Drew i think, didnt see much of him , they were all friends playing locally in Burbank, CA where i was born, i was 10 so he showed me easy stuff he first showed me what an arrpaggio was knowing him but of course i didnt get it. blues scales the same ones Dave here shows.

  • yeah, Kevin was cool but wa always moving around like he was on speed or something, he would walk to the corner to get us some drinks or something he didnt pay to much attention to me like Randy did Randy saw me as a potential student i guess lol he loved to play, he would tell things like remember your root 3rd and 5th notes or get your g-chord down and will talk more lol, but i also remember Randy from my friend who would tell me that he would get colds a lot and not go to school somedays.

  • Guitar God huh well i guess but to me he will always be Randy someone i looked up to, someone with a great heart, very kind, he would laugh a lot at things , jokes , things of that nature, pulling pranks i think was Kevins style they would go shopping for clothes on sunset and on the weekends i would see them in these cool stage clothes, stripes , Randy with his bow ties crazy stuff like they were millionares, they were later on but to me those guys were like homeboys to me.   • well im not sure how he has that habbit to stick it there but try playing stuff that makes ur pinky perpare to land on the fret board. maybe that might help ur pinky atleast be hovering over the frets.
