lol when was 3 i couldn't finish this movie because it scared me shitless now i'm 18 and enjoy slice, dice, gore, and bloody as fuck movies and games. Who would have thought.
I love this movie, and I absolutely adore the novel. I've read it at least twice and I'm starting to re-read it again. =) The movie was a little unnerving for me when I first saw it, but I hadnt read the book before that. was "watership down" written in it, so ive been looking at every used book store trying to find a copy of the book with that cover on it but i cant seem to find it anywhere, if anyone has the cover with the picture on at least please email me so i know im not crazy, haha
so guys i have a problem that i was hopping someone could helpe me with, when i was real liltle i remeber having a copy of this book and on the cover it had three rabits in a circle that kinda resembles one of afis albums cover, well we lost it along the way and i thought i had just kinda imagined it untill about a year ago when we where helping my great grandma move and we found an old clock made out of clay and it had the same design on it and on the back
this is u correct it should be a p.g or 13 cuse of all the blood and scenes but i thought this version was best after i watched this i read the book and WOW you get that feeling at the end like shudder and depressed feeling :_: but the cartoony one was ok but not as good as this and the puppet version was awfull 5/5
I believe that the way this film effects people depends on their up bringing. For example, I live in a rural area of norfolk and see wild rabbits every day. Myself and alll those that live in the same area as me were not affected by the violence in the film yet those who live six miles away in a town were. I think we who live in the country and see what wildlife can be like know what to expect whereas those who wern't taught about it can only assume they're all friendly fluffy bunnies in cages.
@Maksimfan In short, some are more sheltered than others and see the world through glass panes than true nature. And they say us "country folk" don't know anything about "Life". Wildlife IS life and death, ... balance.
@PharohAmonKhan I completely agree! Those who have been wrapped up in cotton wool their whole lives, only ever seeing nature through a television screen have no chance at knowing the true balance of nature, its true beauty. I'd like to see them walk through the fields that I do now that there's Buzzards and Red Kites there. See the masses of partridge carcases and then say that this film was gory. haha. By the way, nice screen name :)
My Granma sent me this when i was 9 and i was so happy to get a new video i wacthed till the end and cried and went to sleep and wet the bed and had nightmares.
Fear can be an important learning experience. Why do you think most children's stories have frightening elements? Besides, this isn't just a children's film.
I'm merely saying that, when I was three years old, I didn't appreciate the numerous throat-rippings. Children's film or no, it's still a U, and all I said was that I didn't think it should be.
Okay bambi... lets have he-man and she-ra too eh? Lets have a denal of what is... lets have our children live in wonderland... lets do that... well lets.
W... what? I'm sorry? He-man? "By the power of Greyskull", and all that? What on earth are you talking about? Was I not allowed to find Watership Down a little violent for my three year old tastes?
Not far from the mark there, only the He-Man reference seems redundant.
The point I'm making is that we don't learn important lessons only from things that are pleasant, but also (and more importantly) from things that are frightening/hurtful.
You didn't like it? Fair enough, but do you think it informed your choices in a negative way as regards violence in your life?
I'm sure we do learn lessons from frightening things, but that's not my point. What I said was that I wouldn't have classified this film as a U, because I believe it's too violent for that. I have a perfectly clear understanding of violence without having watched a lot of it when I was very young. I mean, I'm in the army. You do learn about these things elsewhere.
To learn about certain things later in life can be a damaging shock for some, especially if they were sheltered from a good deal in thier childhood. On the other hand a gratuitous, or extreme depiction of violence could be equally damaging. I'm with the censors on this one, though I'm willing to concede that it was probably partially down to a degree of ignorance on their part in that the film is animated (they thought it must be for children).
Do you think that your perspective on violence is inappropriate? Are you badly adjusted to life with others? Do you think that this may have been a contributing factor?
As an adult who may, or may not wish to bring up a child these are important questions to answer.
If you think that you were traumatised by this film and have been damaged by it then you have reason to be concerned. If not... pretty simple answer; you were not.
I think my perspective on violence is much the same as anybody elses, and no, I am not at all "badly adjusted to life with others". I merely remarked in my original post that I "swear this film scarred me for life" - meant to be taken very much tongue-in-cheek - because when I watched this at around the age of 3 I found the scenes of rabbits' throats being ripped out rather gruesome. Simple as that. I was not being particularly serious, and didn't anticipate my comment being taken thus.
so is this movie worse than Ginga Nagareboshi Gin in violence and blood? Welll whatever I can take graphic animated scenes, but not real life thingies adaptations XD (me and my bad grammar)
i've heard a lot of people say that, but i don't really think so. i found the book to be mostly the same, its only difference being that it went into more detail than the movie, and it explained things better than the movie
The story takes place at a small hill north of Hampshire, named Watership Down. I can do nothing else than highly recommend it, if you haven´t seen the film yet, go see it. Watership down is simply one of the best animated movies ever made.
I watched this film for the first time when i was 6 and let me tell you it did not go down well i had nightmares about it for two years and i was scared to go to the loo on my own cause i thought the blac rabbit was going to pop out of the cupboard. But now when i watch it i laugh at myself for how silly i was being and its now one of my fave movies. Weird or what :D xxx E
Heh, I watched this movie when I was very little. Maybe around... 5,6,7,8? And strangly...I was never bothered by it, even the gore didn't seem to scare me. I was a odd child...
It's an amazing book, and though the film does it justice very well, the book has many excellet points that were left out. I particularly like how Blackavar's character is more important in the book.
this was one of the sadest movies i ever watched in my life, it was so realistic and the truth was so sad. Thanks for uploading this movie! Sad/Awesome movie!
I remember being very freaked out with this film, when I first watched it, so I changed channel and watched "An American's Tail" instead lol. I still slightly freaked out by it, but it is a brilliant film and the book is really good too.
I have loved this novel and movie since I was a wee wee lad. Now I have collected a million movie stills and have all kinds of watership down Tattoos ...my whole upper body!
It's Fiver, because he was the fifth and runt in the brood. It's all explained in the book, they have names for things in their own language like Tharn and Homba.
He's not evil... he's simply death. Death comes for all things, and though it is an ending, it is also a beginning. The scene at the end where Hazel dies and the Black Rabbit takes him actually helped me get over my fears of death as a child. He can be likened to the Angel of Death in the mythology of the Abrahamic religions. He is a servant of God (Frith).
Especially at the end of its scene. Those sound effects they use to accompany the Black Rabbit are like they were designed to press some of your most primal "OH NOES PREDATOR-LIKE EMBODIMENT OF DEATH AT 12 O' CLOCK!" buttons that were first installed into evolutionary ancestors that were small...and delicious.
I've always enjoyed movies like these. As sad and violent as they are, it's the honest truth. This is how it is for rabbits in the wild. To me, it's like a homage to the animals who have to endure this on a daily basis.
Ive read this book more than any other. as a child this film scared the fuck out of me.the bit where the field bleeds use to reduce me to tears. no joke.
i was 9 year old hispanic seeing in 1979 this on showtime cable for the first time and it confused the hell out of me. i cried for the rabbits who got torn up by the dog.
An incredible socialism critic in all forms of society structures. Throught provoking aswell, turning death into a beautiful thing (in some cases) which is part of every life.
i watched this YEARS ago and i cried , it was so sad and creepy .. al i can remember is a black rabbit stuck in a rabbit trap with blood coming out of his mouth ... :(
but ims gonna watch it again .. :)
this film is ALWAYS on at christmas , its so wierd
good to hear cuz im reading the book cuz i think the movie is kinda scary and i dont like watching rabbits being beaten to death even when its a cartoon becuz i love rabbits! and my old rabbits lookd like fiver! lol
Im 12 and i watched it and it scares the shit out of me! i love rabbits, but the first time i saw it i was 8 and i couldent sleep cuz i watched it befor bed, but i rmber crying when hazel got shot, lol, i know humans will do anything to look pretty or cool wearing rabbit and fox and that stuff, im so happy becuz in ireland ur not aloud wear real animal fur!
i know! iznt it AWESOME!!!!! i was disapointed by the movie though. it left out some HUGE details it was a good movie though....if you havent read the book.
i saw this alsoooo as a kid......i had a flashback 2nite of it for some dumb reason...and looked it up and here i am hahah.....warped.......late 70's early 80's really had some legendary shit
i love this movie; thanks a lot for uploading this..i couldn't find my VHS of it, so i started looking for the DVD and couldn't find it anywhere..but now i got it right here on youtube!! score! lol.. but yeah, one of my favourite movies, no matter how violent it is haha
This movie was terrifying when I was a kid. Now that I'm older I want to see how messed up it really was. I'm only on this first part but the damn fox is scaring me already!
On October 7, 2008 Warner Home Video will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic fantasy film favorite with the DVD debut of Watership Down Deluxe Edition
Man.. I just started watching this last year and it ended up coming on TV. Pretty good movie... Weird a fourteen year old is watching a movie made a long long LONG time ago XD

An incredible socialism critic in all forms of society structures. Throught provoking aswell, turning death into a beautiful thing (in some cases) which is part of every life.
