Wow some of these comments are downright disrespectful and show how little knowledge still exists out in the mma community. The bottom line is Rickson was the best during the early stages of mma and an absolute legend in the jiujitsu scene. Numerous Mundial level jiujitsu players would roll with Rickson and speak of getting owned by the man. For Rickson to fight Fedor is absurd. One thing you guys have to understand is that when the Gracie's say jiu jitsu, they are viewing it not just as Gracie or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but as a continuation of the original Japanese art. Conde Koma never told Carlos Sr. he was teaching him judo, and he started training before the founding of the Kodokan.

So when Rickson says no one makes it in mma without learning jiu jitsu, he is right. Judo, Sambo, BJJ, all come from the first art.

The Gracies overdo it with their ceremonies. All these guys have weak MMA records. Yeah Jiu Jitsu is a great art but its about 30% of MMA and of self defense. The standup, boxing/muay thai etc is just as important and something you dont learn at their gyms.

bjj may not be the be all end all of the martial arts but it is the foundation that everything else should be built off of. You can be an amazing striker or an amazing wrestler and up against a bjj guy you will lose. The only way to beat a bjj guy is to know bjj yourself. At least enough to nullify their game. On the other hand without knowing any striking you can still do relativley well (look at demian maia) of course you will never make it to the top.
