  • The one year anniversary of my dear little bunnys passing is coming up. She was such a good little girl who tried so hard. I tried to make everything perfect for her but somehow she went anyway. Something broke her heart. I asked God to bring her back but He wouldnt. So every day I just go on. I have more bunnies now. They are so sweet but nothing can replace my little princess and all the hopes we had.

  • Magnifique interprétation !

  • You are par excellance!!!! You are a mistro!!! Thank you!

  • Maravilhosa interpretação da Pavane!!!

  • Absolutely beautiful interpretation.

  • Little Woodlawn, Thankyou for being in our lives, your little heart brought more joy than we knew,,,, You are running so happily now little friend, if you remember me maybe you can find me again and play again just a little,,,,,,,,,

  • The candles remind me of Ai Enma aka "Jigoku Shoujo" The music from the Anime show is awesome. Please take the time to look up on YouTube at any of the songs from the episodes. Most are played on a piano. There are 6 soundtracks of the shows. A real blessing.

  • I can never get enough of this song, even though I hate how painful the memories comes through my mind once again, making me cry

  • ♥ .

  • epic

    Gracias.

  • Hemming uses way too much pedal, it disturbs the stillness with its hidden depth of grief

  • The best version of this piece, I think, is from Cecile Ousset.

  • The pics are gorgeous, too.

  • Good job !

  • so beautiful, I like it

  • Affascinante!! :)

  • I find this to be the most compelling, beautiful and haunting version of this gorgeous song played. The mental images the float through my head are amazing whenever I hear this.

  • @Lilkenshin86 he first composed it for piano and then orchestrated it himself.

  • At 2.40 he played the same arpeggio (G major) in the left hand when it should be the C major in the left hand. Just noticed it, I've played this piece virtually hundreds of times, and I just heard the small error. (No offence intended, I make more mistakes than him!)

  • reminds me of murals of cowgirls and guitars painted on the sides of Dodge vans.

Merci

  • What??? He never did an orchestration.

  • @ManuelSpintoTenor Yes, first he composed it for piano and then orchestrated it himself. It´s beautiful.

  • @ManuelSpintoTenor Yes he did. First he composed it for piano and then orchestrated it himself.

  • Yes he did. First he composed it for piano and then orchestrated it himself. Beautiful.

  • he is awsome... i love it ...

  • Hemming just fucking owns.

  • I think Maurice Ravel owns more :-)

  • i had never listened to ravel, but i heard about it some time ago and i decided to try. Now, I love this song. and the orchestra version is awe inspiring too...

  • I only knew this piece in the orchestraic version. The piano version is just as soothing...

  • who is plyaing?

  • I'm not a huge Ravel fan, but this piece is definitely a favorite. It has many textures, colors, and overall, a fine level of emotion.

  • Thank you for uploading to this beautiful video.i love Fujiko Hemming plays Ravel:Pavane pour une Infante defunte.I feel silence and sadness of the unforgettable memories.

  • It's nostalgic, bittersweet, saddening ...it's the story of life put to a melody.

  • Beautiful and sensitive performance.

  • Rose, that is wonderfully interpreted, gorgeous!

  • フランソワの『亡き王女』、アルバムの最初の曲.しかも、その第1音が頭蓋骨にトーンと響く.最高ですね.甘さはなし.でも、酔っ払い^^;

  • I fell in love with this music the very first time i heard it. there's something special about the melody, and this particular piano solo is wonderful!

  • IT had the exact same affect on me! I went to a recital and heard an arrangement for Oboe, piano and string bass! I went home and looked it up and fell in love over and over again! there is something in the melody...that just understands me!!

  • quel talent!

  • this is aetheticism at its finest...indeed

  • the song is basically ART MUSIC, the idea of the title is that the dead princess is the one dancing...

  • This is straight from the back of my sheet music:

This work was given its world premiere by Ricardo Vines on April 5, 1902 and was the first of Ravel's works to achieve real popularity. It is dedicated to the Princess Edmond de Polignac, a painter and wealthy member of the French aristocracy.

  • You're almost right. Winnaretta Eugenie Singer was the woman Edmond married, dubbed the 'Princesse de Polignac'. She WAS Ravel's patron and he dedicated this work to her :) Everyone else FYI, the only potential real-life inspiration cited was the death of Margaret Theresa of Spain, wayyy before Ravel's time.

  • Actually the dead princess here (according to my teacher who teaches musical history) is not an actual princess but Ravel's friend's daughter who died at a very young age

  • Actually, I had read that Ravel chose the title simply because it was so mellifluous !

    PAVANE POUR UNE INFANTE DEFUNTE

It's a nonsensical title ! Why would one Dance for a dead princess or a dead young girl ??? No, he chose the title simply because it was so beautiful to the ear.

  • apparently he wanted to rhyme infante and defunte according to wikipedia.

  • Comment removed

  • In other words, he wanted people to play it simply and sincerely. IMHO, this performance accomplishes that.

  • This ranks as one of the most beautiful pieces ever for solo piano, IMHO, and the rendition is stunning. I love this piece.

  • I found some sheet music at the store :)

  • Ich liebe dieses Lied! Es ist schön!

  • Ravel wrote this for the piano though it has been transcribed for different instruments and full orchestra. Sheet music should be available.

  • Anyone know where I can get the sheet music for this?

  • Sorry, I do not think you can get anywhere. Because, I feel and hear this is this pianist"s own composition. And I do not feel any serious pianist would ever want to play it. I apologize for incorrect English, but my information to you.

  • Your English is fine, thank you :) We played it for orchestra once and I never thought of playing it on the piano, so I thought maybe there was sheet music...but you're right, the pianist could have arranged it himself. :)

  • No pianist would want to play a standard repertoire piece from Ravel? This is the Pavane for a Dead Princess you fool! It was WRITTEN for piano!!!

  • Well, I kind of disagree. This playing by Hemming is rather like a Dead Princess for a Sickly Pavane, and I don't remember that Ravel wrote one, either for the piano or transcription for the orchestra. Do you?

  • Ravel did write this. For piano. It says so in my sheet music for it. "Pavane pour une Infante Defunte" can either mean "Song for a Dead Princess" or "Song for a Dead Infant." According to my orchestra teacher, he wrote it when a king's baby daughter died. He wrote it for her funeral.

According to my sheet music, he was quite upset about over-dramatic interpretations of it. He said, "I have written a Pavane for a dead princess, not a dead pavane for a princess," or something like that.

  • Yes, something like that. But, in my honest opinion, this performance isn't even that. It is a dead princess over a mutilated pavane. But, this is only purely subjective opinion. No use arguing over mutilations. So let us be friends. By the way, I never knew Ravel wrote the work because a king's baby died. I used to believe he was inspired by some famous painting, and the "dead princess" thing is purely fiction.

  • I by no means intended to suggest that I did not want to be friends with you. :) You seem like a lovely person, and we can easily agree to disagree :)

I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it said that it actually wasn't written for any specific princess. I guess my teacher was misinformed. :( Oh well.

  • No, you are incorrect. Infante is the name for Spanish princesses. Look it up. It does not mean infant in the literal sense.

  • I'm just trusting my orchestra teacher, who was obviously misinformed :)

  • Yeah, it's confusing. At least you can inform HIM now =).

  • Lol, her. And I'd feel so bad...she's so sweet! :D

  • yh apparently this princess's portrait is in the famous musium in paris (i cant spell the name :()

  • the louvre?

    i think it's the best!

  • Bravo !!!

    Beautifully played, Thankyou !!!.

  • Gorgeous piece beautifully played. Brava! TY.

  • beautiful!

  • ravel is a genius. he makes me ashamed of myself, which is a difficult task since i've got an ego larger than my einsteinian intelligence and superhuman strength.

  • beutiful piece. xD

  • This video has been played nearly 18,000 times and yet it only has 22 ratings. Just thought I'd mention that. right-o.

  • very beautiful interpretation, i think the instrument is partly the reason (beautiful sound) but the pianist is also very talented

  • It's composed by Ravel, right? Not Liszt^^

    Thanks for the upload!

  • Gorgeous piece of music.

  • I love this piece. It's very reserved & beautiful.

  • Probably my most favourite piece of music. Definitely having it played at my funeral.

  • corrected it

    thank you!!

  • I quoted this music from an album called "the raindrop" of Fujiko

  • Wasn't this piece composed by Ravel?
