@boscoesarmy The Ford Galaxy would definitely manage to get through, because it is one of the best cars in the UK, but the Zafira was a straight fail because its a shit car.
I hydrolocked my car once in a flash flood. Didn't even know I was driving into such deep water since I couldn't see. Funny thing is my car kept running, albeit making the world worst noise. $2100 later, it's fixed.
If i had to make a bet at the start I would have said the Ford Galaxy / Vauxhall Zafira ? would have been the one to get through. I would have expected that little sports mazda to definetely have failed. It just demonstartes the correct way to do it. Don't try and plough through and create a wave to swamp the engine.
I love how drivers from around the world are attracted by a street flooded. They just drive in thinking it cannot be deeper than 6 inches...and there ya go. Them make priceless vids.
@willrep420 the water must not have got in the engine, if so you would not have started it as water does not compress causing bent valves even conrods too.
I was in a convoy of cars a few months back when a main highway was flooded by rain and tides. My little cavelier had water coming in all the doors but somehow made it through :D! Even passed a stalled crown vic.
@ShanesAutos he was going too fast, and as others here say, he caused a bow wave which went so high that it went up into the air intake (directly behind the grill... that's what the grills are for to allow air to be sucked in for the fuelair mix) and slurped the water in great quantity into the combustion chamber. Game over. Engines can't compress a chamber full of water. Often it buckles the cylinder head in the process too. Expensive repair. He may too have made it if he had gone much slower.
It was the Zafira driver who went too fast and swamped their own car, why am I not surprised? Oh yeh, because you have to be an IDIOT to buy that car.
Hey was there some major issue with the Vauxhall Zafira because i remember them being sold in my country and then they all disappeared not long after.
Haha stupid driver of the van. You sped up and swamped your own vehicle. Learn about the bow wave. Dont go fast and dont go directly into oncoming water or it gets higher. Slow and steady and try to keep the water at an angle to your front and a trough will appear like the back of a wave. Or better yet get duct tape and rip out the ventalation behind your dryer, attach to intake and tape open end on roof.
@davidn04 Okay but here is the thing, if there is a flash flood and you need to get out and all roads are blocked, my way will work. Pull the intake from the air box, attach the flex-tubing from behind your dryer and tape the ends together and the other end to the roof. Sorry that you lack ingenuity, but this "idiot" has 2 patents at 23 years old so don't imply I cannot engineer a longer intake from shit around the house. And yes, a bow wave, watch the videos and you can see the bow wave.
haha! now the driver has to do the walk of shame round to the bonnet with everyone watching. dead slow and keep it revving is the way to get through it
I would have. If you have a wrangler, or grand cherokee they have much more height clearance then these vehicles... Hell that Miata made it through lol. The problem with the van was that he was going way to fast. I knew he was going to get hydrolocked the moment i saw him starting to fly through... and thats exactly what happend.
Heh, i have a 98 ZJ 5.9 v8 with 120, and 98 zj 4.0 with 170k. Stock height i belive they are able to handle around 23 or so inchs of water before it even gets to the air intake, but you also have to worry about the breather on the transmission, and the differentials. Going through water that deep may not get you hydro locked but the axles will probably have water in them and you have to be carefull about the tranny.
when you speed more than normal water waves dynamic goes up the hood rather than the right and left sides like a boat the water goes right and left side but believe me if the boat was designed to make the water goes uo it will sink.
I kno im going to get a lot of comments saying im bs'ing, but i drove my VW thru a flooded street, it stalled and stood in the water for about 5 min until a tow truck pulled it out, engine was stuttering but a few days later the car was running. its been about a year since and no problems with the car. i have NO idea how it survived lol.
Some people have no idea about right speed for bow waves (and some got it right).
Always check where your air intake is too. My Citroens have high intakes....and the Fords that we have had have all had high air intakes. The small humble Ford Fiesta (supermini) is very good at wading! Intake right up high behind the headlights and protected. Best place.
However some other cars suck the air right up from a few inches above ground.
Take a look and know where yours is...it maybe good to know.
Why do people keep saying it's in Mexico? You can tell it's in the UK because of the number plates and the steering wheel being on the RIGHT side NOT the LEFT!!! Everyone who says it's in Mexico must be the dumbest people in the world!!!
Go slow through deep water. So the wave doesn't wash over the bumper into the air intake. This should be taught in drivers education. Even better don't drive a car into deep water.

@Zorrosmart Water cant go into most any Engine it gets into the intake and Stalls it. Most any EFI engine will not allow water past the injectors Since when gas gos through them it gets Vaporized Water can't make it through an Injector Since it can not be Changed into a gas form the injectors will simply leave a water bubble over it and not allow gas to get by and therefor the engine will not run.
@MrPenobe thats why the water gets into the air intake and goes into the engine... it does not go though the injectors lolz....that would involve the water getting into the gas tank...
