Ive always been suspicious of labeling things like Autism, ADD, Aspergers as syndromes or conditions, I agree the world needs all kinds of minds, so I see these labels as just different personality types not an illness.
it would be interesting if certain industries or companies were on the lookout for young talent, like grade-school kids, to keep an eye on, sponsor, and train through their lives. sort of like athletic recruiters. sure, it could be sinister, but it could also be quite beneficial.
I honestly thought everyone thought in pictures too. Hehe.
The funnest part of thinking in pictures- if I watch a movie enough times, usually 3, 5 or so times, I actually remember everything and I can watch it in my head if I get bored. Or I simply replay a song in my head in full detail.
I think in pictures too. My mind is more like Bing. It sees specific images but also images that are kind of similar to it. My own sci-fi cinema doesn't shutdown until after 2am too. It's great! I also don't remember signs but remember landscapes to help me remember to find a place.
She is a very brilliant person, and to a degree I believe what she is saying with 1 caveat: People who are severely Autistic do still need research and help, but mild Austistics need to have very supportive parents and teachers to discover their strong suites and focus them on them.
weightpro, my son had learning disabilities, went through special ed, got his master's and wants his ph.d.
It's all about budgeting in schools. These videos would be great for special ed. teachers and I have already sent him several. Much of her information can be utilized but again, there is way too much activity and stimulation and no down time for students, and the SCHOOL BOARD chooses the curriculum. It's difficult.
why are people laughing when she says autists belong in silicon valley? for the techies and visual thinkers, it's so true. :) i'm not sure why the words-people (NLD's) aren't all writing either. but we're just not.
@ChooseMyFamily many....and mostly because the label of autism was seen as being almost a death sentence
i hate that they are scaring parents with that new commercial regarding 1 out of 125 kid will be diagnosed with autism
its a spectrum....my niece and nephew have as and they are both brilliant and i love them dearly...my nephew can do stuff in programming that i could only wish to...he is 12 and has offered to teach me
@brabon1 I think you're right, but it's so sad, especially for people who might now be adults and may never get help, or help might not make as much difference after a certain age. That's terrific about your nephew!
Part if it boils down to the difference in philosophy of whether schools should teach kids direct fact-knowledge or if it they should teach in a way that more allows the child to find their own talents and passions. I think the former has almost no value without the latter. Put differently, though it would make things so much easier, it is not possible to effectively ‘industrialize’ even basic education. There must be the recognition of individuality in even the most fundamental ways of thinking
I agree that school systems can get stuck in the ideology that there's only one good/useful way to think and if you can't effectively think in that way then they can't help you. More educators and policy makers need to realize there's more than one way to be smart and there's more than one way to express that intelligence.
Temple Grandin at TED 2010. An Autistic activist for those others like her who see in pictures and not in words. She draws the correlation between the visual mind and the mind of animals. SUPER INTERESTING and a few minutes well spent!
yes the world needs all kinds of minds, just like our body need all kinds of cells and no one is designed to have others dictate it patterns of growth and developMend . between her, Jill Bolte Taylor and Sir Ken Robinson. . . any educators listening
Fantastic, such charisma and sharp, unclouded intelligence.
And by the way, self diagnosis of Asperger's isn't recommended. It's kind of like a horoscope, if you think long and hard enough about the symptoms you're going to start joining dots that aren't there.
@lwanatt There's always exceptions to the rule. Though, you might want to consider if you have had the capabilities to develop each methods of thought sufficiently. There might be one that comes easier to you than the others, but in realistic terms, and varying degrees, we all use a variety of forms in every-day situations. And, like she said in the presentation, there are different degrees and levels.
@lwanatt Asperger's is also a spectrum in itself. There are no two people with Asperger's who are exactly alike. So, there is nothing to disagree with. She just gave examples of some of the different ways of thinking. You can use all of the different methods, but usually one or two will be stronger assets for you, than the others. Remember a main characteristic of Asperger's is "really good at one subject area and really not so good in another subject area."
Here is the real problem: Managers are the type that are good with words and normal people, they have no idea how to deal with autistic people. I am an autistic computer programmer and all the bosses I have had have no idea how to deal with me. They give me general tasks, not specific tasks. They make big changes mid stream. Several bosses even left it up to me to find something to do!
I think of her as a Ghandi for animals. She has reduced sooo much suffering for animals which I, as a former (15 year) vegetarian think is incredibly great. Go Temple!!!
Superb, I think people should listen and consider what she is talking about and put it into action. I believe fixing school systems is one of the first steps.
@weightpro Fixing school systems requires recognition of all the common varieties of brain... I know from personal experience, that I learn almost nothing if it isn't spoken. Simply reading something is almost pointless, however if I have even a computer voice reading along with me, I remember almost word for word every detail from articles I read years ago.
It's easy to blame the student, and it's hard for society to truly learn how to effectively teach.
You are very right, there are many different types of people who are learn better with certain teaching techniques. And each person is different so yes whoever it would be to try and fix the system would have to realize the level of detail one must go into to create and effective learning system. By the way, I believe USA has fallen behind in nearly every subject :( and I think it should definetly be fixed. However, USA still holds number one in the confidence category haha.
@weightpro "USA still holds number one in the confidence category"
That's actually a bad thing... it sounds good, but people who are extremely confident, are more likely to develop narcissistic disorders. Think about it, who else besides narcissists love themselves more ;P
Being confident IMO, leads people to believe that they don't need to learn from others and thus means that teachers can't reach them as easily.
@TheReasonWhyGuy I get what you are trying to say and i agree to some extent but being narcissistic and confident are two completely different things. For example, I am a very confident male, I am confidently aggressive and but I'm not in love with myself, I'd much prefer to talk about others and worry about myself on my own time. I don't want everything to be about me, I want it to be about others. The trick is balancing mind with hormones haha.
@Nahulanham Sorry, but your single word dismissive comment failed to refer to which of my comments you wished to dismiss. Either that or you wanted to proclaim the irrelevance of all my comments, and in that case might I ask, WHY? ;p
This is an odd video for me. I think in all 3 modes. I think in pictures, but with a verbal narrative, and I link up patterns. I think in a spider web, where each junction is a verbal/visual packet of information and links can be made to see the whole, I am over detailed in my explanations after a lifetime of habitually needing to rehash details for people who can't follow. I was okay at algebra, I have musical talent, I love to read. I was also good at geometry. I wonder what that means?
Does that ugly bitch not picture how she looks to the subjective audience up there? Or does she just not care? Because I don't give a fuck about how food on legs lives out its last days. Did she think about that?
@aciiiid82: To be modest, your comment was crude, closed minded, poorly thought out, ill conceived and ill advised. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again:
Thanks you HBO for presenting the magnificant story of Temple Grandin. It's been a long time since I saw a movie that made me feel good about the ability we have to improve and stretch ourselves. I cried when I watched the ridicule and harassment Temple had to endure while growing up. She could go anywhere and do anything now but instead she continues to share and teach the world about her type of disability. God bless you Temple and Clare Danes deserves an emmy for her performance.
I just saw the movie, Temple Grandin, and it was brilliantly made. The story was inspirational. I used to tutor an autistic person, and that movie made me see the way an autistic person thinks.
I'm a graduate student in neuroscience (fancy ey?), and because of that I think about and discuss the brain and the mind a lot, and the beauty of the complex and abstract system that is the mind/brain is hard to bring across to laypeople. This video is awesome because this woman is slightly different at a fundamental level, but we can still relate to her and see part's of our own mind that are not in plain sight, but which gives the mind such grandeur. She also tells on important social issues.
Thank you Temple Grandin for giving parents of children on the autism spectrum the pep talk we need to help our kids move into the future to become the successful members of society that they can become - you are truly an inspiration to me!!
And I agree with those who are fed up with the society at large thinking that there's some kind of "normal" and everyone should be somewhere close to that, then doping them up if they aren't normal. They tried that on me because I am very ADD. Instead of changing the people, maybe they should try changing the material!
Amen sister! Our school system is broken! It's configured to work well with a very specific mindset. They need to better engage the kinetic learner, focus less on "teaching the test," and try not to push that pesky homework too much... thing with me was I was horrible at homework, but I always aced my exams. As a result, I tended to have C's and D's and amazed my teachers with A's and B's on my exams. They had the audacity to call me stupid. However, I was (and still am) studying, reading up...
Yes, stop doping up kids in order to make the "normal". A lot of successfull adults with bi-polar (such a Stephen Fry) would not choose to "cure" themselves if given the opportunity.
I strongly agree that the world needs all sort of different minds for better functioning society. This also includes diverse minds within each human condition with autism being one of numerous examples. I have thought along these terms for many years as I am an artist with a learning difference with central auditory processing deficit and attention deficit.
I think she's generalizing autistic people a bit much with her mind groups. I know an autistic guy who's great at math but also seem to have a "verbal mind," always talking about obscure facts.
Unfortunately, to the rest of the world Im just a retard.
These words just bounce off and vanish because truth is, the world DOESNT want all kinds of minds. They want one repetative pattern that does not object to anything and obeys their rules.
I guess I didn't realize how different I am until seeing this! I too think in pictures, movies, and algorithms. I can think in words if I need to but they are linear and normally 2-3 go in parallel. When they touch I slur. (I'm a published writer and poet, ironically, in addition to my science background). I'm thankful for the 20 years of competitive sports that taught me social skills and helped me deal with excessive energy!
so what mate? you understand that if you walk outside you are inhaling tons of carcinogenic substances same thing if you eat regular food. No substance is harmful in minute amounts and all substances are harmful in too big amounts even water or vitamin A can kill you. Vaccines save lives its stupid to scare others because you yourself are fear driven. Especially that you have no studies to support you
yea and why dont you type in true UFO stories and hunted houses. Just because you can find it on the internet does not mean it is true. And im fully aware that government is run by elite groups that's why im libertarian but it doesn't mean that i have to believe in all the conspiracy theories that people make up and make people that are against big government look bad. And i really like George Carlin
spelling has nothing to do with you being wrong. But personal experience is deceiving. If you would look into psychology you would notice how flawed and at the same time powerful our brain is. Placebos can actually cure many things yet they are just pills with nothing. Same thing with homeopathy people believe in it because of personal experience yet its just a placebo. Personal experience demonstrates nothing comparing to a scientific study.
show good evidence and i will be convinced. Unless its you who believes in things without evidence. What would you call a person like that? Do you think someone who believes in things without real evidence is a little bit naive? Or should we believe in things simply because other people tell us too?
you can see that it could be caused by something else. Maybe you dont think it was but you cant deny that it could have been. Or maybe it is true that you are allergic but it does not mean that vaccines do not save lives. Vaccines got rid of small pox entirely and other vaccines prevent a lot of people from getting sick everyday. There is a lot of people that dont get vaccinated and then die from diseases.
you might mean well but lives can be lost through spread of misinformation. Just like there are people that say that seat-belts kill people in accidents. That might be true in some cases but they save more lives they they take and same is true for vaccines. Maybe there are some people that will die eating peanuts because they are allergic but does that mean that selling peanuts should be illegal?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
listen listen i understand such base, solid reason/logic BUT dude we live in an INSANE, ILLOGICAL, NO COMMON SENSE LEFT EARTH!!!
"The question is NOT whether or not your paranoid the question IS: Are you paranoid ENOUGH?????" a qutoe from the movie Strange Days.
the Whitecoats are evil because they are parroting evil information, and the methodology of current medicine is to treat dis-ease with Chemical, Carcinogenic Pills or shoots.........MEDICINE CURES NOTHING!
Modern medicine is amazing however advancement has been pushed back by the need to make profit. Curing your patient short-term or long-term from a business point of view is not desirable, however prescribing a drug you have to take daily for years is. Pharmaceuitcal companies make incredible profits, point is, don't confuse dedicated doctors/scientists with corrupt doctors/scientists and businessmen who's only concern is making themselves richer at the cost of people's suffering.
the world we live in is logical. If it wasnt it would be pointless to make choices. Nothing would make any sense and if you ate you could be hungrier then before you ate. If you took a breath you could be suffocating. This world is logical its people in this world who dont think logically. its people who dont understand this world
Sadly I must disagree. Most people in the world live in a cloud of illogical superstitious non-sense, propagated by preachers. Where is the logic in religion?
The world may need many different kinds of mind but not the religious variety.
we do agree then! People in this world are illogical but the laws of the universe and universe itself is very logical. That is all my comment stated. I do agree that the people are very illogical and believe in stuff simply because of their personal experience and limited perspective. And when you try to convince them they just spit in your face and call you names.
simply because you disagree with someone it does not mean that he is wrong and simply because you think that you are right does not make you right. That is the reason why we have debates and discussions using arguments.
wow one of the WORST TED talks ever all she was really emphasizing through the bulk of the movie was the brilliance of autistic people and how they're so great but have no social skills which is as true as anyone born not autistic is a social genius... she then trys to say something insightful which can be dumbed down to "lets have better teachers and mentors" she is also quite self-centered in this talk with personal experiance as proof other then statstical/scientific etc.
Amazing...and her ideas on education, for autistic childrenand beyond, are SO TRUE. Minds are stimulated by so many different things; every person can be great if they can find the things they are passionately interested in!
her emphasis on showing children real life stuff, real problems to 'turn them on', is 100% on spot.
i have asperger's and my drive to think and study for hours on end comes from concrete questions about the world around and within me.
i still have a hard time finishing some of the core courses, but that's a matter of discipline which gets easier when you excel in other courses. the important thing is having a vision, a passion, a solution to a big problem, and the freedom to follow it.
This is exceptional help for those of us with Asperger's Synrome. I was on the Autism spectrum at 2 years old, and today at 17 I no longer "qualify" for a diagnosis, but I still have a very Aspie mind. Which means I think in pictures, and I am very successful in learning so long as I can learn the way that works for me. Mentors are essential. Thank you Temple.
So true. Almost fell off my chair when a friend/counselor told me I have mild autism, in my 40s! I understand exactly what you are saying about life history now makes sense! I certainly appreciate the perks-extraordinary hearing and intuition are super-useful, for example. peace to you.
It's not bragging; she's stating her accomplishments without shame. Shame is a social convention...we learn not to boast so as not to make others uncomfortable. Without that pretext, it's really just a list of what she has done and what she still wants to do.
I think its good to be proud of your accomplishments. IT gives other people things to aim for so to say, well that's if there open minded and want to grow as an individual.
Actually, it may be part of her message. She is trying to establish that severely autistic people can make amazing contributions to society. A lot of people think that Autism automatically means mental retardation
i have chromographeme synethesia (however you spell it) i think in color and shape. "colored hearing" and "colored vision." so i think i can relate a bit to how temple sees the world.

I honestly thought everyone thought in pictures too. Hehe.
The funnest part of thinking in pictures- if I watch a movie enough times, usually 3, 5 or so times, I actually remember everything and I can watch it in my head if I get bored. Or I simply replay a song in my head in full detail.
It's like having an iPhone brain: super fun. :D

I think in pictures too. My mind is more like Bing. It sees specific images but also images that are kind of similar to it. My own sci-fi cinema doesn't shutdown until after 2am too. It's great! I also don't remember signs but remember landscapes to help me remember to find a place.

It's all about budgeting in schools. These videos would be great for special ed. teachers and I have already sent him several. Much of her information can be utilized but again, there is way too much activity and stimulation and no down time for students, and the SCHOOL BOARD chooses the curriculum. It's difficult.

There must be the recognition of individuality in even the most fundamental ways of thinking
alteritY9k 1 year ago
I agree that school systems can get stuck in the ideology that there's only one good/useful way to think and if you can't effectively think in that way then they can't help you. More educators and policy makers need to realize there's more than one way to be smart and there's more than one way to express that intelligence.

@lwanatt you don't have to be just one type
nosafespace 1 year ago

Superb, I think people should listen and consider what she is talking about and put it into action. I believe fixing school systems is one of the first steps.
weightpro 1 year ago 61
@weightpro Fixing school systems requires recognition of all the common varieties of brain... I know from personal experience, that I learn almost nothing if it isn't spoken. Simply reading something is almost pointless, however if I have even a computer voice reading along with me, I remember almost word for word every detail from articles I read years ago.
It's easy to blame the student, and it's hard for society to truly learn how to effectively teach.
TheReasonWhyGuy 1 year ago
@TheReasonWhyGuy

To assume knowledge, is to ensure ignorance.
TheReasonWhyGuy 1 year ago
@TheReasonWhyGuy I get what you are trying to say and i agree to some extent but being narcissistic and confident are two completely different things. For example, I am a very confident male, I am confidently aggressive and but I'm not in love with myself, I'd much prefer to talk about others and worry about myself on my own time. I don't want everything to be about me, I want it to be about others. The trick is balancing mind with hormones haha.

Thanks you HBO for presenting the magnificant story of Temple Grandin. It's been a long time since I saw a movie that made me feel good about the ability we have to improve and stretch ourselves. I cried when I watched the ridicule and harassment Temple had to endure while growing up. God bless you Temple and Clare Danes deserves an emmy for her performance.

However, I was (and still am) studying, reading up...

you might mean well but lives can be lost through spread of misinformation. Just like there are people that say that seat-belts kill people in accidents.
