Quite simply, Russia over the last 10 years has sorted out it's econo policies which were in disarray in the 90s, thus is getting richer by the year, most of that wealth comes from trading on it's considerable natural resources. What Putin did do is make sure most of the wealth created in Russia, stays in the Russian markets making the Russian economy strong. The new economies like India and Brazil are following this model and will become powerhouse economies in this decade.
