Never blame your (potential) customers for not buying the game at full price. The market is very competitive and if customers would rather wait and save some dollars than buy the game on launch day it says something about the quality of the product (or your lack of marketing).
The reason "strategy" in rts' has gone by the way side look at DoW2 and C&C4 no base building no real strategy that these games were based off of, hence poor sales SC2 is popular because of the good gameplay and sticking to the basics that the rts was built on
I have nothing against online passes, but I do think that they should offer a cheap online pass one could purchase from an online market place for someone who does buy the game used.
To realize that people just dont have the patience to wait for even a superior product to come out, when a perfectly competable xbox can be bought 2 months earlier.
Strategy gaming is a really niche market. Those who play starcraft -- just ask all the xboxCOD fanboys if they'd play starcraft/total war/supcom. Besides strat gaming is PC oriented and half the people are like "Derp, PC can play games??" Also good games really do go unoticed, back in the 90's grim fandango was video game art at its finest, but it sold like 13 copies.
90% of RTS that are not either Blizzard or Total War just plain suck. So often graphics or worse AI are terrible, and original universe and content is getting very rare. Just look at how the C&C was fucked in the ass by EA...
Amalur is totaly worth buying new for anyone who likes RPG with a fresh and dynamic gameplay. I'm playing the demo over and over, the combat fun is ridiculously fun :D
the problem with a large amount of people in an fps game is that single players feel as if they are making less of an impact and it doesnt make you feel as if it matters if you are there or not.
If companies go under it means there is not enough demand, in the capitalist system that you all like so much that's just how things go so please don't cry for corporations that made or still make millions, and resist the nonsense that is not being able to own what you buy... or at least make them call it renting...
I've never taken interest in any Shooters except for Farcry... strategy gaming is my calling and will always be... and yes there aren't many good strategy games coming out these days... last ones were Anno 2070, Civilization V and StarCraft 2 but before them I can't remember any good ones being released in a long time... FORCE: Could you make a round up of good Strategy games that has come out lately? Many watching your channel would definately appreciate it... Peace
A huge game would be fun, but only if it involved some tactics and skill instead of having two sides senselessly charge at each other until the kill count gets high enough.
If gamers WANT new stuff and innovative content we have to be willing to support those titles that maybe aren't the AAA CoD or BF3 titles. Anyone who waits for a good game to go on sale is just being greedy and not supporting the smaller game studios. If you really want to buy a game but don't have the money? That's what saving is for. Buy it from the producer and not secondhand or don't expect the optimal game experience IMO.
I think a lot of consumers are impatient and will get the Xbox over PS4 because it is available first, but then after about a year of those who waited for the PS4 gloating about how much better their console is (assuming Sony do capitalise enough) some will trade in for the PS4, so in the long run I think Sony are doing the right thing.
I'd love to see more new Strategy games I could just spend hours and hours in but since the release of Company of heroes and onwards (apart from starcraft 2) has bored me to death after one or two games because theres nothing new to it apart from new models and descriptions.

And I've never tried civilization. But starcraft is awesome, blizzard knows what they are doing in the RTS department and it seems they are one of the few if not the only. FPS games require reaction and that's about it whereas RTS games use your whole brain and true intelligence.
I don't think it will hurt Sony to release ps3 after Microsoft and Nintendo release their consoles, but I don't think it's going to be much different hardware... Look at the amount of games released each year, to many and to much and they wonder why they dont make the money they want. To much choice sometimes = no choice in reality. There is to many slices of the pie being divided up between to many companies.

@afterbirth83 I think it's safe to say, that in this day and age, those without the internet are in the minority. As technology shifts, those not following the curve will be left behind in the dust - expected to catch up. Afterall, who buys brand new VHS tapes anymore? (are they even sold, is a better question)
@Hellskorn actually alot of people buys vhs tapes, yes we sell em. a company called clas ohlson (norway, sweden finland, uk) sells loads of empty vhs tapes AND vhs players :) ok. noone under the age of lets say... 50 buys them. but yea. they still exist :P
RTS games are falling back because most of the gamers like FPS where you dont need to be smarter and faster than your enemy. FPS games are all about experience and the basic knowledge of sound and maps. however in RTS games everything counts. the speed the build order every fucking detail can change everything at least thats how it works at the competitive scene. all im saying that it much harder to master. im a fps gamer i rape everyone at every fps but still in the bronze league must play more
the online pass make me sick to my stomach....and im not surprise that it comes from EA i will not buy the game....ever! even on sale and every one who do buy it is pathetic and have no backbone
I'm not paying 60 dollars for a generic RPG. Sorry. Where the fuck do these developers get off with this sense of entitlement. You have to EARN my 60 bucks, not the other way around assholes.
Strategy games are not popular because they need much time and focus to be even decent at them. Many strategy games have much micromanagement and complicated stuff so they might seem hard to play for many players.
I agree to an extent. I believe there should be a publisher based limit on how low their product can go. This is not uncommon in normal every day products. Also if they want to sell more then maybe that 59.99 price tag that is so commonly used is just getting to pricey for the struggling economy.
why are stategy games loosing popularity? Because i believe that strategy games actually require a lot of thinking and planning ahead.. the general public uses video games to unwind or have fun.. Even though I do enjoy RTS's as much as any other genre but to the general public its easier to screw ur head off and play Bioshock or talk crap to 7 year old kids on COD..
with online passes... gamestop will soon be forced to lower the resale price on their second hand games to compensate. this means that the origional company will get a piece of the resale. also, online passes can be purchased for the average of 10$.
Thanks for the updates! Also, I just want to mention that the online pass is a good thing. Of course gamers don't want to spend more money but, if it was up to gamers they wouldn't pay for anything. If no one is paying for anything who is making the games? I support the online pass.
Games cost 60 for new and 35 for a game 3-4 years old... go back ten years once a game hit a millions sales it hit greatest hit status and dropped to 20$. I WANT THE GREATEST HITS BACK!
The online pass is NOT crazy at all, ever since battle.net went into place you could only register your games to one account. It's was only a matter of time until these types of structures trickled down into consoles.
I don't like TBS's but my husband loves them the trouble they have is that Civ 5 was so bad. Also i approve of online passes as long as they are available to be bought separate if you buy a used game. I don't think companies should be barred from what they do with their own products. We are the consumer but without them we would have no games. Comaplining about online passes is more wanting somehting for nothing. If some1 comes out with a great product we should have to pay what it's worth.
Oh people just shut up with free2play. We all know that a real f2p model, real non-paid is never fun. You get restricted way too much. Stupid, stupid term.
Wait a minute, wait a minute... If I buy a car, I can turn around and sell it again and Ford doesn't come knocking demanding money from that sale. I can resell books. I can resell DVDs. Virtually anything can be resold without the original manufacturer getting all bothered about it. Why do video game companies think they somehow are exceptional in this regard? Seems to me that they need a business model that takes reselling into consideration rather than taking such ridiculous measures.
Force I don't agree with your statement about Sony not willing to get D3 on the Vita.
Why? You must know that before the game is sold on a console, the game studio must anticipate how many copies they are going to sold and somewhat pay them in advance to Sony/MS/Nintendo.
Therefore the more games are sold, the more money they make, even if the game doesn't sells the expected previsions...
Console games are crazy expensive. If companies will push it and make it happen that players wont be able to re-use games attained from the secondary market, players will show a middlefinger to the perspective company. I am sick and tired of companies whining about money - this is a market economy, either entertain me and make moooney or stfu + gfy
I do not agree with the online pass. I also don't buy the argument that a good game studio can't survive without making one. Sure, a lot of studios has closed down, but a lot of other ones have not. The ones who survived until lately (where the whole DRM+anti used game market bullshit started) didn't have make money on their customer's back. They did it with quality games and a decent marketing campaign. There are exceptions, but hardly enough to justify being this greedy.
If the copyright industry wants to compare pirating games to stealing a car, then buying a game should be comparable to buying a car which would mean the possibility sell the item in its used condition. I'm sure that any product developer would love to get money for every person that uses their item. You don't pay the architect/carpenters money if you buy a "used" house. I wouldn't mind it either if someone gave me a lot of money for nothing.
I don't think SONY being last to announce/release their next-gen console will hurt them in any way at all, those who are loyal will wait for it, and many others will probably be tired of their WiiU, Xbox 3 and want something new.
Certainly it will give them extra time to come out with something slightly more powerful, i own a 360, only console i have of this gen, and i'm of the opinion the PS3 is a superior machine in several ways that i don't have enough characters to go into detail here on.
I'm okay with Game companies giving extra 'gifts' to pre-orders, early adopters, or new game buyers (not second hand) as it gives incentive to actually BUY the game, at full price, allowing the company to turn a decent profit, New companies especially such as 38 Studios, but i'm okay with existing companies doing it too. My only beef is, when it's something that adds something big to a game, weapons for an FPS, gear for an online RPG, but gear for SP or a few extra quests unimportant 2 story ok
@stimmedrasmus This is True, but $5 for a game that would otherwise sell for $60, well, 1million x 60 > than 5million x 5. Look at the many indie games that come out at 5-15 bucks, they don't sell nearly as well as a $60 or $100 games, partly because people have come to expect more from a more expensive game, not always true however, though matter of opinion
The current price of games is fairly acceptable, not everyone can afford them all, but making the games cheaper does not net more money
I personally never really understood the problem with online pass. I can see why some people might be mad about it, but the reason behind having an online pass is acceptable. As a pc player I rather have online pass then some retarded DRM system in my game.
I have one game for you when you ask about strategy games: Homeworld. Great game play, Incredible story, and a devoted fan base. This is all the good things that a RTS can be.
1000 people in a FPS will take awhile to get right. How will friendly fire work? With 1000 people having different latencies a lot of players will hit eachother unintentionally. And if you take friendly fire out, the games will be stupid.
As for strategy games, I think developers should bundle them into other games like FPS', MMO's, and Action rpgs either as mini games or as game modes, so that more people get used to playing strat games, both rts and turnbased.
strategy games defenatly have a place the problem is that many are just really dull or boring make something fun like age of mythology and you are gunna sell lots
if it would be possible to host games with 1k or more players, and you have large maps for it, like all of manhattan with access to buildings, it would be awesome!
But with too small maps/spawn areas, 1 team is goin to get raped xD
Strategy games do have a place in the market. The game developers dont realize that if they would only make quality rts games we would buy them. Thats why im exited about CC: generals 2
no good games will sell, I think I will pass on a singleplaygame with a online pass, I dont like the way this is going, whats next? pay to unlock each level of a game?
another reason why there are more shooters than RTS games is the folowing:
RTS games acually have 2 game models, its either the oldscool base race known from command and conquer and star craft. or its total war.
shooters have a lot more different models to play with, like the battlefield 32 vs 32, the call of duty arcade style, the counter strike realism model and all shooters with super powers.
so either make a NEW kind of RTS or just have fun with what we now have.
I played mag, (around 250 players) and it was really boring, the game looked a lot lewss good then the othergames that caem out at the time. i didnt like it.
force i dont think its a hardware issue for ps4 my ps2 was old and was looking at ps3 and there werent enough games available so went with xbox had ps3 had more game titles available prob gone for ps3 but i love kinnect so dont think ill get ps4
i think people (hence NA) would rather play their Xbox and play their fps games like halo, gears of war and CoD and anyother fps out there. im sorry NA is just going for games that dont require that much thinking atleast in my local area
1stly, don't care about online pass strategy. It did not go well and will hurt their sales.
2ndly, Sony is seriously losing out on the market share by coming out late with their console. Unless game developers are willing to have exciting and exclusive game titles that gamers really wanted then perhaps.
3rdly, I feel as console games are getting more attention from developers than PC games and complex RTS games are not easily played on console thus RTS genre are not getting attention
I'm sorry for all the people that play only used games to save money, but as i business student i was called out several times by small firms throughout my studies to investigate certain aspects of the firm and why it wasn't going well. And i support fully to developers claim, too many people think that firms are all successful, especially in the gaming industry, however that is one of the most low profit / high risk industries in the world, of course not as low profit as airlines, but close.
Force, when you were reading off the PS next-gen console info post thing the Wii part was reading out "because they are in decline" and you misread deadline. Just heads up :)
I think Sony is making a mistake. The PS2 was the most popular system when it and the original XBOX were out, but when the 360 was released before the PS3, a lot of PS2 players bought the 360 because it came out first, then did not buy the PS3, so if history repeats itself, PS3 players could buy the Microsoft system when it comes out, then not buy the new Sony system. BTW U CAN BLINK?!?! What is this sorcery?!?! haha

Strategy games are not popular because they need much time and focus to be even decent at them. Many strategy games have much micromanagement and complicated stuff so they might seem hard to play for many players.
Angeleyee 1 month ago

TheMurrdawg 1 month ago
Thanks for the updates! Also, I just want to mention that the online pass is a good thing. Of course gamers don't want to spend more money but, if it was up to gamers they wouldn't pay for anything. If no one is paying for anything who is making the games? I support the online pass.

0Sybylle0 1 month ago
Force I don't agree with your statement about Sony not willing to get D3 on the Vita.
Why? You must know that before the game is sold on a console, the game studio must anticipate how many copies they are going to sold and somewhat pay them in advance to Sony/MS/Nintendo.
Therefore the more games are sold, the more money they make, even if the game doesn't sells the expected previsions...
0Sybylle0 1 month ago

Certainly it will give them extra time to come out with something slightly more powerful, i own a 360, only console i have of this gen, and i'm of the opinion the PS3 is a superior machine in several ways that i don't have enough characters to go into detail here on.
happycamel8666 1 month ago
I'm okay with Game companies giving extra 'gifts' to pre-orders, early adopters, or new game buyers (not second hand) as it gives incentive to actually BUY the game, at full price, allowing the company to turn a decent profit, New companies especially such as 38 Studios, but i'm okay with existing companies doing it too. My only beef is, when it's something that adds something big to a game, weapons for an FPS, gear for an online RPG, but gear for SP or a few extra quests unimportant 2 story ok
happycamel8666 1 month ago
Lower the price for games to 1-5 Dollars for any games and you will see an increase in games beeing bought....
stimmedrasmus 1 month ago
@stimmedrasmus This is True, but $5 for a game that would otherwise sell for $60, well, 1million x 60 > than 5million x 5. Look at the many indie games that come out at 5-15 bucks, they don't sell nearly as well as a $60 or $100 games, partly because people have come to expect more from a more expensive game, not always true however, though matter of opinion
The current price of games is fairly acceptable, not everyone can afford them all, but making the games cheaper does not net more money

As for strategy games, I think developers should bundle them into other games like FPS', MMO's, and Action rpgs either as mini games or as game modes, so that more people get used to playing strat games, both rts and turnbased.

another reason why there are more shooters than RTS games is the folowing:
RTS games acually have 2 game models, its either the oldscool base race known from command and conquer and star craft. or its total war.
shooters have a lot more different models to play with, like the battlefield 32 vs 32, the call of duty arcade style, the counter strike realism model and all shooters with super powers.
so either make a NEW kind of RTS or just have fun with what we now have.

usually an RTS game provides a lot more gameplay hours and a shitload of replay value.
thus less RTS are needed in the market.

What is this sorcery?!?! haha
