Too many people (as usual) judge tenors by how LOUD and BIG their voices were. One only has to read comments about Paoli and Del Monaco and how they could tear telephone books apart with their voices and how no other tenor should even walk the earth because they couldn't beat Del Monaco in a fight in a bar. Schipa's voice penetrated and roe above the orchestra - it did penetrate and it worked. Big voices, small voices: if they "work" they work. This is charming which was Schipa's forte.

Anche io magari non sono esattamente ammiratrice di Schipa, ma non mi prmetterei mai di scivere ciò che ha scritto quel... tipetto là!

....my dear dogieblitz.......the small sounds that Schipa made with his small voice were easily outdone by Gigli, Lanza, MDM, Bjoerling Caruso....you misread the comment...........those were the poured honey singers, liquid gold....stylist maybe Schipa was but a small voice that in no way was the equal of the greats.....at best Schipa is never mentioned with the greats, he may have a niche on the third string bench.......

@j72050 Forse lei non sa che questa voce "piccola e misera",come lei la descrive,quando si irradiava dalle terme di Caracalla,a Roma,la sentivano fino al Colosseo,perchè Schipa sapeva proiettare la sua voce.Poi lui,con il suo mezzo personalissimo,poteva fare di tutto,perchè la grande padronanza tecnica aveva reso la voce docile ad ogni sua volontà espressiva.Tutti i tenori da lei citati,Del Monaco compreso,avevano una stima immensa per Schipa.

@j72050 I loved Lanza, but he does not belong on the list of great tenors. Why? Because he never sang on the operatic stage and risked everything. Everything that we ever heard of him was produced in a studio. Re: Schipa, yes, his voice was small but no less beautiful.

Do you know what you are talking about?

The two names (Schipa and Gigli) you are talking about are two of the best tenors in the first half of the 20th century. It's shame to see someone so ignorant and aragant in calling Gigli and Schipa "mediocre singer." Please, show me youe recordings!

Quanto anch'io avrei voluto essere seduto su quel salotto a godere del canto intimo,umano,appassionato di questa voce unica nella storia e pertanto irripetibile.Un suono ricercato non già nelle profondità laringee ma nelle profondità dell'animo umano.
