I don't agree that mumblecore films ignore the rules of screenwriting. Maybe some do, but Bujalski's films actually have very well crafted structures that demonstrate many of the basic "rules" discussed by people like Syd Field and Blake Snyder.

I am starting as a stand-up comic. I have my own style with loads of sarcasm and improv. These types of movies would never be something any of my friends would expect to see me in but I have been watching clips all afternoon and I'm in love. Someday I'll be in one and I guarantee it won't be boring.

By definition mumblecore is mundane. Why don't you just fim your life. Maybe someone will put it on the Sundance channel.

and i agree with you that field and mckee can hold you back... mostly because they encourage you to procrastinate about writing your script because you're busy checking it for adherence to rules.

whether you want to believe it or not this was a 'calling card' for the filmmaker because he got his name out there; if you like "real life" movies about "real people" maybe you need to watch movies about junkies (because that is real life, no matter how much you shelter yourself); while its true syd field might suck i don't see how this is a genre that has room to grow (esp. for others) i'm no doctor but i'd say mumblecore isn't something that would save your life

yea, but you never explain why mumblecore "saved your life"; being in a band shouldn't be defined by anybody, its the sense of unity and feeling important/wanted that makes us want to become part of bands at such young ages; "no one was forced to look like a junkie" and no "forced plot twists" makes for a pretty boring movie, if it was made for the love of movies why should i watch it, i wanna watch a MOVIE;

Iknow... as an aspiring filmmaker their films have definitely intrigued me.
