my les paul have the same problem, the headstock just broke off the neck in a clean split. looks like design flaw to me. glued it once and it came off again.
ok. great video, very detailed nice work....however...that sad funeral music, made me think you were about to just put this guit in a casket and bury it.... lol
Hello sir , i see the photos and work was 5 years ago, is the guitar still holding together with the gorilla glue? Also did you ever fill the crack with wood putty or bondo and sanded along with refinishing it? thanks good work..It appears it has sentimental value to you..i feel the same about my 76' stratocaster, and my 73' fender acoustic..
That glue is not the best thing to use. Tilebond is the best. You need splines or pins to fix a break like that. Plus the little rubber bands don't have the push you need the have a strong bond. I've fixed at least 50 or more guitars like that. But good luck.
i got news for ya- the extra 500 you would spend on a gibson is just so you can see "gibson" on the headstock.
he likes his guitar and took matters into his own hands. better than relying on someone else or throwing money at the problem. thanks for the vid wfrank g
I have the same guitar with the same problem (exactly the same rupture in the exactly same place).
My guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Limited Edition (2009) in alpine white color.
I repaired it, using glue and clamps. Just as you did, but, when It was dry (glue and paint), after 24 hours, I put strings, and headstock moved to the front, I quit strings and headstock goes back again to its place. I can't tune it, I used a glue called Resistol, for woods.
@ohYew812 well theyre pretty anal and boast about their headstock angle and says that though it maybe more prone to headstock breakage, no other headstock angles can produce their "sound". i have not noticed it though lol
I have used Gorilla glue on several broken necks I buy 'em for a hobby,I use the Gorilla glue MDI type dampen the two sides first with water, clamp tight and leave at least 24 hours before unclamping, repaired acoustic bridges too
As the glue expands cover everthing you dont want glued with mask tape !
dont use stands use case or the bed or a corner, unplug lead if poss,I got tangled in a lead and pulled my PRS to the carpet floor,no damage though but it frighted the hell out of me.
@davidis29 calm down dude it could be his first guitar which adds sentimental value to it... my first guitar is a epi-335 and it fell down my stand... i felt like shit, i fixed it and its effin badass now
@guitarrmasta shit, you're probably right, if that was my first guitar I would cry like a little bitch and not just "almost cry" hhh, you've said that you're first guitar was an Epi-355 and it also fell down on the floor.
@Insanedrummerof12 the guitar tech i took it to told me it would be easier to fix if it would have split down the neck instead of breaking almost straight across (more surface area to glue and easier to clamp together). Send me some pics if you can. Hope my vid helps.
I've always maintained that there are only two kinds of people in this world - the breakers and the menders! This mender has done an inspired job on what at first sight seemed an impossible task.. I've never used Gorilla glue before but will from now on - it looks like plain PVA but presumably has a secret ingredient that makes it so strong. Brilliant.
Opinion: Gibson and Epiphone should change the truss rod adjustment to the heel of the neck. From what I have seen personally and on youtube, there is not much wood around the truss rod cavity. so it weakens the neck considerably. It happen to my black beauty i fixed it and never took it out again. My compliments to this man, Nice Job.
Its nice to see that u made a great repair.. BUT, that is not good at all, it will need more pressure than what those pny tale holders gives... i guess thats the best repair u could do... so then its great.. but far from good in my opinion... the neck will easy be cracked again cus of the "non pressure" repair... anyways.. good that it works and stay in tune most of the times...
You shouldnt have to add glue to the crack in the back..there should have been enough squeezout. Just for future reference, wax the truss rod nut (so you dont glue it in place), take the nut off (should be removal..only held on with crazy glue) and you might want to use splints for support,
this happened to my gibson the other day! talk about a shit day!!! hopefully it can be repair cause its hanging on my a thread soo it can still be seen exactly where it needs to be positioned
thanks for the video. my epiphone casino's head stock snapped off this morning and I too almost cried. It felt like one of my best friends had just died. But your video has given me hope! thank you
cheap wood my friend how much do u payed for the rapair, same thing in here my epi les paul broke the neck i almost cried, epiphone uses cheap wood in almost all of their guitars, I hope our guitar held! cheers!
Hey, that was cool! i repaired a broken headstock for my friend once. it snapped along a glue joint tho so it wasn't that bad. I like the wood block + rubber band thing tho. thats creative. stay classy!
I have an old Aria LP with a cracked neck looking similar to (but not near as bad as) the 8 min mark where you're q-tipping glue on it....Considering the neck is still intact, do you suppose this would add strength to my neck and prevent further cracking?
To hell with guitar stands. You can have the best stand ever created, and still be at risk for an accident. No stand on earth substitutes the safety and security of a hardshell case. Keep her safe in the case when shes not on stage.
dont be pissed. if you never plan on selling it. i just broke my headstock 2 days ago. i called the guitar tech at guitar center and he wanted $160 to repair it. I said ok. then i went to the hard ware storee bought 2 clamps, wood glue (gorilla) and i cut to pieces of wood to create a splint. once i glued the headstock i put the clamps and wood splints on for 6 hours. i then took off the clamps and let set for 16 more hours. now my guitar plays like new again
so, have you noticed any problems with intonation since you did this repair? For example it will be in tune when your playing down on the first few frets but when you go up around the 12th fret it sounds out of tune.
I like the set up of your clamps that you chose to hold it in an upright position. I would have probably used titebond because im not to familiar with Gorilla glues. Nice video looks like a solid repair
same happened to me. a bandroom mate fell back on it and snaped the headstock right above the nut. i did cry. like a 4 year old. i just today after 4 months fixed it myself after considering having a pro do it. it drying as i type. i did the same. exept i used a pressure clamp. i'll post a video of how it went.
this is pretty much what happened to my les paul too! it was the worst two hours of my life i had no idea what would happen and when the ppl at the guitar store told me it can be repaired there was a undesribable amount of relief
@hw6743 i've read that it'll be actually stronger now that it's been glued/repaired. someone on the internet said that gibson's are prone to this happening, any truth to that?
Les paul necks/heads tend to be more fragile cause they dont have boltonnecks and there necks are often thinner.
i keep myy guitar in a hardshell case locked in my closet in side its orgional cardbord package fillled with foam pellets when ever i don t use it for a while. overkill
you retard, they dont break because theyre not bolt on, and quite honestly most gibson necks are thicker than fenders or other bolt ons. Since mahogany is not as strong as maple that most others use, its more prone to breakage. plus bolt ons kill tone. thats why gibsons rule
bolt ons do not kill tone they just sound different give a more percussive snap response neither is ever best through necks sound different to glued in necks ie gibson type the important thing is whatever construction it must be right for the guitar type ie i played a set neck strat once it was very wrong no fendery tone at all and gibson bolt on is pretty bad too quality of construction is the key so no gibsons r not best because there set neck instruments....
@wfrankg But overall, does it sound close enough to how it did before? Something similar happened to mine just today only that the strap broke and she fell to the ground headstock first. And how much time did it took you to repair it?
actually glue is stronger than wood and is almost garunteed never to break again. Gibsons have horrible design flaws and haven't improved in 50 years. WAY overpriced, many of gibson parts are manufactured in china and assembled in the U.S. don't buy CMI stuff.
than you obviously did something wrong.. i broke mine 4 months ago.. it goes out of tune every now and again just from playing it, but thats normal... and mine hasn't snapped at all.. its still a great guitar and sounds just as good as the day i bought it.. .. did you glue it yourself, or did you take it to a guitar tech?
i did it myself. i think the angle of the snaps made it alot more awkward to fix. i asked somebody i know that works with wood about it and he reckons gorilla glue isnt the best for it. aparently titebond is best
oh yes a common break, mine looks almost identical.. minus the fact that min is a gibson. imm going to try my own repair after your video. and i broke mine by a breaking strap while guitar swings.
Are you still playing your SG? I would like to see a picture of it. $25! you got a great deal. The locate guitar repairman wanted about $300, but he gave me the info so I could repair it myself.
t fell off my guitar stand on to a carpeted floor. Apparently this is a common break for the Les Paul and Ive been told that Gibson is aware of this flaw.
it's not really a flaw, but because gibson necks have such an extreme back pitch (13 degree angle) they are much more vlnerable to breaking when they fall. but i've broken a headstock with no angle bend back. the biggest part of it is the amount of tension in that part of the neck that all of the strings puts on it..... it's just waiting to happen if it falls =[
You're right. I guess flaw wasn't the right word. But I've been told by a few guitar "experts" that Gibson should break the headstocks off all their guitar and then repair them (to make them stronger).
I love Gibson (Epiphone) guitars and no matter what they're made of,( sh*t happens) and guitars will get broken.
Thanks for watching my video and thanks for your comment.
yeah, gibson necks/headstocks are actually stronger when they're repaired and hold tune better, so i guess that wouldn't be a bad plan. i just repaired a gibson les paul this weekend. it's a lot cheaper to buy broken gibson on ebay's and repair them, especially since they'll hold tune better after a repair, just makes more sense to me
I'm working on a repair actually i've done a number of headstock repairs. I'm not only into the strong repair but also in the finish where the crack was. I try my hardest to make a seamless repair. I've done it but it is a pain in the ass!! I'm working on a Penco Les paul right now. This one is mine. Putting binding while i am at it on the headstock.
It fell off my guitar stand on to a carpeted floor. Apparently this is a common break for the Les Paul and Ive been told that Gibson is aware of this flaw.
Frank: Why not put some voice over comments explaining what you are doing (instead of that AWFUL music)? I'm sure you could have clarified a few points on your repair techniques.
You're right about the music;everyone has their own preferences. However, I DO thank you for posting the video. I just completed a similar repair and your ideas were quite helpful.
atleast it wasn't a gibson

I love Gibson (Epiphone) guitars and no matter what they're made of,( sh*t happens) and guitars will get broken.
Thanks for watching my video and thanks for your comment.

yeah, gibson necks/headstocks are actually stronger when they're repaired and hold tune better, so i guess that wouldn't be a bad plan. i just repaired a gibson les paul this weekend. it's a lot cheaper to buy broken gibson on ebay's and repair them, especially since they'll hold tune better after a repair, just makes more sense to me

@christopherjc4 Epiphone heads are angled at 14 degrees, Gibsons are angled at 17

Putting binding while i am at it on the headstock.

nice job.. im curious though, how does one break their headstock?

It fell off my guitar stand on to a carpeted floor. Apparently this is a common break for the Les Paul and Ive been told that Gibson is aware of this flaw.

Frank: Why not put some voice over comments explaining what you are doing (instead of that AWFUL music)? I'm sure you could have clarified a few points on your repair techniques.

When i get the time i will be adding audio to the video to help clarify what i did. About the awful music, TO EACH HIS OWN.

You're right about the music;everyone has their own preferences. However, I DO thank you for posting the video. I just completed a similar repair and your ideas were quite helpful.
