@RetroToledo Here is what I can tell, I think you (and everyone else here) knows about the japanese end of production, but here is what I know about the american side of it. @butchdeadlift10 Sad really, I remember reading up on that years back too. Sounds like what happened with a film Sanrio had to get cranked out back in the 70's called "Metamorphoses" which went nowhere and isn't remembered today (besides those like me who bothered to find it).
@butchdeadlift10 It continued on into the 80's in this country. It wasn't really until the late 80's/early 90's when it came around for us and you started to see some interesting things happen in the medium.
@RetroToledo I would agree that the 80s were a turning point. We had a marketing shift, importing shift, Don Bluth becoming a viable competitor for disney, Who Frame roger rabbit brought in a ton of nostalgia, digital coloring was around the corner, the Cal-arts generation came of age, Tim Burton, Speilberg, Roy Disney...the list goes on
Amazing, just like every other Miyazaki work, and a real shame that it got cut, too. It's about time someone reboots the "Slumberland" franchise (I assume that will be the new name). I don't care if it's by Ghibli or not, but it had better have the quality and awesomeness on par with this clip.

to bad they dont make movies like this animore... youll be lucky if they come out with a 2D movies and if its good it would be like a miracle... the only thing that comes out of western animation nowadays its crappy CGI stuff with lame plots and shallow characters
Actually, I did. They're just color cel set-ups that were posted on a wall, for a scene featuring the character voiced by Mickey Rooney (Flip) and some lizard-like creatures. As I said, they were mostly working on Gummi Bears and Galaxy High when I was there.
Holy crap, this scene is amazing. I like the the look of the pilot character, but mostly it's just a stunningly conceived and directed sequence... I don't remember the last time I saw something like this in an animation. In fact, I like it better than any of the flying sequences that were actually in the film. Wish they'd kept this!
I just find it funny that TMS isn't the first thing that comes in the minds of American producers trying to get their anime-esque projects like Kill Bill, Gotham Knight or Animatrix.
Everyone's about Production I.G., MadHouse or Studio 4°C that for business.
It is ironic that Warner didn't approach TMS, since they did work on some of the best Batman and Superman episodes: namely "Feat of Clay, Pt II", "Two-Face pt I", "World's Finest, Pts I-III", "A Little Piece of Home", "Bizarro's World", and of course, "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker".
TMS had a lot of employers, including Disney (New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers and Ducktales). Not so much "ironic" as much as it's more of greener grass to visit.
I remember them because I was in Japan in '86, and took a tour of TMS while they were working on the Gummi Bears, Galaxy High, and early cel set ups on Nemo, and none of what I saw was seen here, or in the final film.
No, no 1000 times NO! There was nothing in my statement noting they never did domestic works before 1999. I said "they went back to anime" because that was the year they ceased overseas production or at least started to limit their resources for it. They still did anime on top of things.
I know they've done series like Tensai Bakabon, Attack No. 1 and Ohayo Spank before doing business overseas. I was just making note of where and when they decided to shift their business focus.
Clarification to the people effing up facts out there.
Tokyo Movie Shinsha used to be VERY good with overseas animation. Their choice was to go back to domestic (anime) in 1999. Sucks it had to end that way for them, but look at the TV producers and animation market for today: the money's DROPPED.
I loved this film growing up. I had the VHS, but then it was destroyed when I kapt trying to pause and re-wind it to get a good look at one of the character's costume designs. It was ruined. I recently bought a new copy of the tape, and watched it. It really is one of the greatest films of all time, and is the reason I want to be a cartoonist. It used to amaze me as a child, just as it does now.
I still love the film, but I would have liked to see that character. He looks cool.
I am Confused. *laughs a bit* I have the VHS I actually watched it about an house ago. This doesn't look like apart of the film I watched? was this cut?
This was how the movie was originally going to be done. You can see the similiarities but by the time the movie finally found a studio to actually do it, it changed to the version we know now.
yeah, this was my favourite film as a kid. Amazing animation. Better then disney. Did miyasaki have anything to do with this film? Looks like it has his touch.
Don't mean to sound aggressive, but do you understand animation? Saying that it's better than Disney is a very bold statement.
Personally, I feel such comparisons may be a waste of time. This is wonderfully animated, and so are the Disney features. Is one better than the other in the technical department? Possibly. Is it of importance to determine which one is [marginally] superior? I don't think so.
Disney was great. they started the movement. However, studio ghibli offers something far beyond disney. It's sort of like comparing the music of U2 to that of radiohead or LCD Sound system. Disney is a dinasaur that has lost it's roots, while studio gibli has stayed true to the art form that is animation. Long live Miyazaki.
Well ... I was hoping Disney would get back on the right track soon :p. I don't know what you consider "Disney's Roots" since their output is very varied. But if you're referring to traditional fairy tales or musicals then you're in luck with John Musker's and Ron Clements' traditionally animated "The Princess and the Frog" next year, and Glen Keane's technically incredible-sounding CG "Rapunzel" in 2010. Let's hope they deliver.
I think "The Emperor's New Groove" is a wonderful film. It's a straight comedy, and it's pulled off wonderfully. Granted, it doesn't have "Tarzan"'s eye-popping visuals, but it does have some brilliant character animation in Yzma. The film was critically acclaimed.
I'll admit I've only seen a handful of Ghibli films, and they feel ever sooooo different from Disney animated features. I liked "Spirited Away" very much, but I have to say "Howl's Moving Castle" was stunning!
Excellent choice of music here. It is from Wagner's Lohengrin, Prelude to Act 3. By far my favorite piece of classical music ever, even though it is short.
cyberdogg2: "longer fan-assembled cut of Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler"
Whoa, such a creature exists? How did that happen?! And why did fans have to cobble the material together instead of Williams himself?
Where can one see this Frankenstein? I've never actually seen the butcher job that ended up being released, but I sure have heard a lot about the rather heartbreaking history of it.
Miyazaki or Takahata would definitely have done right by it. I'm very curious as to what their disagreements were. In any case it's moot, because the film that ended up being made bears no resemblence to anything they would create.
This clip is lovely because I love manga/anime designs of the overall Ghibli "family" of styles, but have always wanted to see them move with Disney-esque fullness. This is close, and it's a thrill to see.
is this a new clip, or are they remaking the film?
i mean, i know that Miyazaki and Takahata had differing views for the film when they did work on it in the 80's, but that doesn't explain where this clip came from.
it also looks newer than the original, and TMS's symbol is different.
Back In Print. Echo Bridge has rebranded the original Funimation disc. It's available at Amazon and despite the errors in their listing (full frame), it's actually WIDESCREEN, 5.1 audio, and all the (lame) special features from the 2004 disc. Just re-released in Jan. 09.
I always suspected Miyazaki dropped out of the project because he had wanted to do something more faithful to the original comic strip. This clip would seem to confirm that suspicion, but it also looks more "Miyazaki" than "Winsor McCay." Still, there's no doubt a Miyazaki "Nemo" would have been much better than the banal pap that was finally released. But that was back before he was internationally famous and enjoyed the clout he does now. Too bad.
Good point, but Miyazaki also took a lot of liberties doing his adaptation of the Howel's Moving Castle children's novel. But, you know, it was still an awesome movie.
I always liked this demo. It was from sometime in the 80s, seeing that this movie was in pre-production since the early 80s and Hayao Miyazaki was attached to it.
Little Nemo came BEFORE Finding Nemo. Hell, the original Winsor McCay comic strips originated from the early 1900s. That's why Little Nemo > Finding Nemo.
This is awesome! Can anyone tell me the name of the background music used here? It's one of my favorite pieces, but it's been a while since I've heard it and I forgot the title and composer.
Beautiful bit of animation by the Japanese. Shame it never got a release in the theaters here in the '80s. I got the DVD while I was in Japan at least.
such a shame.

BPrice1A 3 years ago
TMS had a lot of employers, including Disney (New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers and Ducktales). Not so much "ironic" as much as it's more of greener grass to visit.

Don't forget Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears and The Wuzzles.
BPrice1A 3 years ago
Why yes, thank you for reminding me.
Especially since I almost forgot the Wuzzles ^_^;
KeijiKG 3 years ago

KeijiKG 3 years ago
Miyazaki and Ghibli had NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.

Takaru55 3 years ago
This was how the movie was originally going to be done. You can see the similiarities but by the time the movie finally found a studio to actually do it, it changed to the version we know now.

yeah, this was my favourite film as a kid. Amazing animation. Better then disney. Did miyasaki have anything to do with this film? Looks like it has his touch.
10angrytigers 3 years ago
Don't mean to sound aggressive, but do you understand animation? Saying that it's better than Disney is a very bold statement.
Personally, I feel such comparisons may be a waste of time. This is wonderfully animated, and so are the Disney features. Is one better than the other in the technical department? Possibly. Is it of importance to determine which one is [marginally] superior? I don't think so.
Both are great. Let's leave it at that.
julian7carter 3 years ago
Disney was great. they started the movement. However, studio ghibli offers something far beyond disney. It's sort of like comparing the music of U2 to that of radiohead or LCD Sound system. Disney is a dinasaur that has lost it's roots, while studio gibli has stayed true to the art form that is animation. Long live Miyazaki.
The Emperors new groove proves my point!
10angrytigers 3 years ago 2
Let's hope they deliver.
julian7carter 3 years ago

Marbles471 3 years ago
It is a pity that Miyazaki didnt made it. Nemo´s animation was great but the story was bad. Miyazaki´s version probably could have been better.
toonleap 3 years ago
Miyazaki or Takahata would definitely have done right by it. I'm very curious as to what their disagreements were. In any case it's moot, because the film that ended up being made bears no resemblence to anything they would create.
This clip is lovely because I love manga/anime designs of the overall Ghibli "family" of styles, but have always wanted to see them move with Disney-esque fullness. This is close, and it's a thrill to see.
Marbles471 3 years ago
The original was one of my favorite films ever. If Miyazaki is rebooting this film, then thats like icing on the cake!!!!
Drenn23 3 years ago
is this a new clip, or are they remaking the film?
i mean, i know that Miyazaki and Takahata had differing views for the film when they did work on it in the 80's, but that doesn't explain where this clip came from.
it also looks newer than the original, and TMS's symbol is different.

It would be ridiculous thing to have a new one or too atleast put the old one on dvd.

Coolestmovies 2 years ago
I always suspected Miyazaki dropped out of the project because he had wanted to do something more faithful to the original comic strip. This clip would seem to confirm that suspicion, but it also looks more "Miyazaki" than "Winsor McCay." Still, there's no doubt a Miyazaki "Nemo" would have been much better than the banal pap that was finally released. But that was back before he was internationally famous and enjoyed the clout he does now. Too bad.
mattthorn 3 years ago 2
Good point, but Miyazaki also took a lot of liberties doing his adaptation of the Howel's Moving Castle children's novel. But, you know, it was still an awesome movie.

Little Nemo came BEFORE Finding Nemo. Hell, the original Winsor McCay comic strips originated from the early 1900s. That's why Little Nemo > Finding Nemo.
