Let' s face it, in real life, people travel together - to the movie, shopping, skiiing or to the beach. I like the hatch - it offers utility. I give it a B+. I like the car, but the 4 things are just horrible: 1. The wheels look like crap - the design of the wheel, the tires and how they fill out the wheel well. Horrible! 2. The exhaust is not integrated in the low back bumper? What are they thinking? You just don't dangle the exhaust under the rear bumper any more, those days are over; especially in a $100,000 car. 3. The wheel wells again, the side looks too flat! It needs some hips (flaring)! 4. Where is the rear spoiler?
I just can't get over the four doors on a Porsche...and yes, I know there's the Cayenne. It just seems so weird seeing the rear doors when it comes through a turn.
You have to see it in person. As an owner of the CLS I know its not going to be a competitor based on the price alone ($89K for the Panamera S) but really lets face it, its a sportier Cayenne. I was invited to view this vehicle amongst many others to give my opinion of this car out in California and to be frank the front end is beautiful and then there is the rear...horrific to say the least. I think the Aston Rapide, soon to come out, will look far superior. I saw the prototype in Geneva '06.
I think that the Quattroporte is in the range of the BMW M5 (or better ahypothetical 760i), S8, XJR, etc. The Aston, Maybe. Remember that V8 Vantage is more expensive than a Carrera S (less exclusive but better (far better) car...
(Pd.: I'm not talking in USA models&prices, perhaps the prices are similar there, I don't know. Here not)

All the cars end up looking like a 911 up front, and from there back, its like they said to each other "Who cares how it looks, just draw a curved line and call it a day." then the next guy draws a curve, and all the other designers go *GASP* "It's PERFECT!" even though it ends up looking like some kind of alien face.
You clearly have no clue of what you are talking about, if you compare the design of 996 with 997, the changes are quite significant, and for the better as well, which is a tough thing to do with already a very successful design. I like the car , it adds to the Posche lineup. But it does lack a little spirit, I think this is due to the "unique" head and tail lights, and of course the fact that it's a sedan.

I really wanted to like this car, but I just can't say I like the looks. I love the way the 911, Boxster and Cayman look and for a SUV, the Cayenne is pretty good looking, but this car is in a class full of gorgeous cars (Mercedes CLS, Aston Martin Radipde) and it is probably the worst looking Porsche I can think of. It will perform and drive well, but if I wanted a big expensive sedan, Aston Martin would get my money. No Question. The Rapide is an absolutely stunning car.
I actually don't like the Estoque that much. I love the Rapide sine it looks like a Rapide with two extra doors, but the Estoque just looks like some crazy concept car to me.
I still wouldn't buy this over say a Mercedes or BMW in the same way I wouldn't buy a Cayenna over a Range Rover...Porsche should stick to what it does best. This is not the same model. This car is exactly what you want, something different, the Panamera is a 4door coupe, ment for families, the Porsche company is straying away from the 911 modle, this car is categorized with the Cayenne, and the Boxer. SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
Actually the reason that it doesn't look right at the moment is because this won't be the most popular version of the car. It will be the two door version (which will finally replace the wonderful 928) In that version the proportions should look right.

What Porsche should have done on the rear end is apply some boxster/cayman design cues (staggered curves, not the 911-style single-curve drop) that would have prevented the 'station wagon' look.
It's inevitable that a sedan would look larger and longer, so there was no need to make it look small with a hatchback rear.
OK OK, I agree , what happend with the back? Maybe it will grow on us with minor changes, a-al BMW 7 series 2001 . I have a 928. Remember what everyone thought of that back in 1978? Yes,same thing. But here is the next steps for Porsche once this credit curnch is over:
1. Redesigne the Panamera's arse end,
2. After that redesigne, launch the NEW 928
3. Do what Ford did with the GT and bring out a limited addition modern take on the 917K.

it looks like a 911 with a midsection added, but substantially more ugly. i agree with nicoadam33; why does everything have to look like the bloody 911? i love carrera, but for heaven's sake, leave it alone.

what porsche is trying to achieve by doing this is to gain some practicality in their cars. But that is not the reason we would buy a Porsche, we would buy it because its a sports car...the sedan idea might be a little unclassy

Sure the Cayenne (especially the Mk1) had it`s issues and was often criticized, BUT without it we wouldn`t have the amazing Carrera GT. Keep pumping out the Cayennes if it means Porsche will be able to make brilliant supercars like the CGT!

You guys realize Porsche has the laziest design studio of any car company? All the cars end up looking like a 911 up front, and from there back, its like they said to each other "Who cares how it looks, just draw a curved line and call it a day." then the next guy draws a curve, and all the other designers go *GASP* "It's PERFECT!" even though it ends up looking like some kind of alien face.

You clearly have no clue of what you are talking about, if you compare the design of 996 with 997, the changes are quite significant, and for the better as well, which is a tough thing to do with already a very successful design. What makes Porsche 911 so legendary is that you just don't get tired of looking at it. Porsche has got it right in keeping the basic form of their most successful model.

I like the car , it adds to the Posche lineup. But it does lack a little spirit, I think this is due to the "unique" head and tail lights, and of course the fact that it's a sedan.

I really wanted to like this car, but I just can't say I like the looks. I love the way the 911, Boxster and Cayman look and for a SUV, the Cayenne is pretty good looking, but this car is in a class full of gorgeous cars (Mercedes CLS, Aston Martin Radipde) and it is probably the worst looking Porsche I can think of. It will perform and drive well, but if I wanted a big expensive sedan, Aston Martin would get my money. No Question. The Rapide is an absolutely stunning car.

I still wouldn't buy this over say a Mercedes or BMW in the same way I wouldn't buy a Cayenna over a Range Rover...Porsche should stick to what it does best. And lastly, as great as this car will be, the interior looks like it came from the 80s...hasn't Porsche realised that everyone seems to be shedding buttons these days...including its successful children Audi and VW...I swear there's like over a 100 buttons on the centre console

This is not the same model. This car is exactly what you want, something different, the Panamera is a 4door coupe, ment for families, the Porsche company is straying away from the 911 modle, this car is categorized with the Cayenne, and the Boxer. SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

Actually the reason that it doesn't look right at the moment is because this won't be the most popular version of the car. It will be the two door version (which will finally replace the wonderful 928) In that version the proportions should look right.

in my opinion it does not look bad at all,ok not the best looking porsche ever to be made,yet a beautiful car that is a sport 4door coupe and a very elegant one. Take a merc E63 amg or a bmw m5: they look very sporty but not elegant at all...unless you are a pimp!

What Porsche should have done on the rear end is apply some boxster/cayman design cues (staggered curves, not the 911-style single-curve drop) that would have prevented the 'station wagon' look.
It's inevitable that a sedan would look larger and longer, so there was no need to make it look small with a hatchback rear.

OK OK, I agree , what happend with the back? Maybe it will grow on us with minor changes, a-al BMW 7 series 2001 . I have a 928. Remember what everyone thought of that back in 1978? Yes,same thing. But here is the next steps for Porsche once this credit curnch is over:
1. Redesigne the Panamera's arse end,
2. After that redesigne, launch the NEW 928
3. Do what Ford did with the GT and bring out a limited addition modern take on the 917K.

i agree with #1 for sure, but i understand it was probably difficult to keep the traditional porsche shape while stretching its overall length.
