I think monster land never came for the MD only for the MS. Monster World for MD has nothing to do with monster land. Anyway: Nice review, nice memories :)
WB 5 MW 3 is most likely a retelling of WB in ML. I mean look, They same stuff happens at the same time at the same place. Think about it. See a resemblance of ML Round 2 & MW 3's Alsedo? What about how it begins? Or maybe how the how you fight a knight after completing Alsedo? See.... Just how i.e. Metroid Zero Mission is a retelling of Metroid or Irregular Hunter X is a retelling of Rockman X, Wonder Boy V Monster World III is essentially a retelling of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
Hate to burst your bubble, but how is the megadrive version a port of the arcade just been remade? Ill explain this is monster world, the arcade game was monsterland, two very different games, the arcade monster land had a port with the same name on the master system also called wonderboy 2, then wonderboy 3 came out on master system aswell which is one my fav sega games and it was a full rpg adventure, nothing like monsterland, and this is wonderboy 4 another rpg and a completely different game
Yeah I made mistakes on my initial corrections because I was hastily replying. I only said 7 years because you said that in your review, I should have checked back all the info before I replied. I'm not a Wonderboy expert, I just know that these games were not the same, and the latter was not a "version" of the arcade release.
Wonderboy in MonsterWorld - Blue haired Shion. Different game to Monsterland. The opening and pyramid cave scenes are a homage to Monsterland, and Yellow haired WB appears at the end of the game.
Monster World IV. Japanese only with the girl Arsha. Can get a translation if you can find the ROM.
Ignore the naming conventions. The Adventure Island games can count as wonderboy/monsterworld/bikkuriman games. One of the Adventure Island games is even a platform RPG.
Anyway, the first game in your video is MonsterWorld 1, and the second is MonsterWorld 3
Bikkuriman World games are essentially the same as the Monster World games, same with Monica's Gang. Different sprites, probably different story, but the maps are the same.
Adventure Island is closer to the arcade version of Wonderboy than the Sega Master System game
"yellow haired wonder boy" does NOT appear in that game. You may have mixed it up with Monster Lairs end boss, which is a Demon disguised as Tom-Tom/Wonder Boy.
and he does appear in the shion game. The the final boss kills you at the start of the fight he appears. I can't find an english version of the battle on here, only japanese, but he makes allusions to the previous games
He has GREEN hair (WB3) or BLONDE hair (DC). Are you color blind?
That's Not tom-tom in Monster World 3/WBIMW, that's the Prince of Dark World, as he says himself after you beat him in his monster form. Get your facts straight.
Thought it was brown, but I got the SMS ROM to check, and it's dark green, with light green on the edges. Definitely not yellow in any light, even though it's meant to be the same chap. I don't know what you count the TG16 version as, as it's not officially a Wonder Boy nor Monster World game - but this is what I mean about being able to include games are aren't directly called "Monster World" into the series.
Tom-Tom (Bock Lee Temjin) was the hero in Wonder Boy, Super Wonder Boy: Monster World/Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and Wonder Boy 3: Dragon's Trap/Dragon's Curse (TG16 version)/Monster World 2. He was never brown-haired..
You try playing both games. They share the same plot and even have some of the same levels. Try the coin trick above the first witch's/mystic's house and it still works.
All you have to do is a wikipedia search on Wonderboy. The arcade version you reviewed was released on the Genesis with significant graphical and gameplay changes, under the exact same name as the arcade title, Wonderboy III: Monster Lair. Then, Wonderboy in Monster World came out after, that's why there was a 7 year disparity in releases.
The arcade game you reviewed was the first Wonderboy game. Wonderboy in Monster World of Genesis was Wonderboy IV in Japan. It's kinda inaccurate to say that the genesis version was like a port or something. A more accurate comparison would be the Arcade version versus the Master System release.
No it was not! The first Wonderboy was the one were Wonderboy had to get from a to b without touching enemies and was more of a platformer. The arcade version I reviewed was "Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair" which later recived a remake on the Megadrive called Wonderboy - Monster World which is the game I reviewed and I know this because the orignal company who made the arcade version is credited in the game.
The Sega Genesis/Megadrive version you reviewed was Wonderboy IV (Monster World III) in Japan. It was the 2nd to last game in the series. You reviewed the arcade Wonderboy III and then reviewed the sequel as if it was a remade port of sorts.
Yeah some letters off there. Even so I don't see how these 2 games are different versions of each other lol. They are obviously two different games in the same series.
Lol great review. "I wanna stab those two guards in the FACE but that's not the point" lol.
I love Monster World, Dragon's trap and MW IV. Damn those are good games. I don't quite like the arcade one though (also released on the Master System).
Yeah I managed to pick up this copy from a shop called Gamestation over here in the UK. It was in a B.O.G.O.F offer for £10 so essentaly I got two games for £5 each, one of which was Wonderboy III... which was nice.
Oh and thanks for you kind words. I hope you find a copy of the game to call your own soon! :)
the MD version is my favirote game!
kingbooforums 1 year ago
These two games are similar in some ways but they are not the same. The Genesis game is called "Wonder Boy V Monster World III" in Japan.
1) "Wonder Boy" = 1st Wonder Boy = not a Monster World game
2) "In Monster Land" (the 1st in this vid) = 2nd WB = 1st Monster World
3) "III: Monster Lair" = 3rd WB = not a MW game
4) "III: The Dragon's Trap" = 4th WB = 2nd MW
5) "In Monster World" (the 2nd in this vid) = 5th WB = 3rd MW
6) "Monster World IV" (Japan-exclusive) = 4th MW = not a WB game

Just to clear it up
Wonderboy in Monsterland - (MonsterWorld) The blonde haired Wonderboy, Tom Tom (I think)
Wonderboy - The Dragon's Trap/Lair. Brown haired WB that transforms into animals
dilb80 4 years ago
Wonderboy - Monster Lair. Mediocre Platform shooter

No, they cannot. They were made by different companies, the worlds and story are different and the Wonder Boy games are muc better overall (imho).

ok, according to gens+ screenshots his hair is green in Dragon's trap - 0, 82, 0 for most of his hair and 0, 255, 0 for the highlights
dilb80 4 years ago
Yes, exactly. No hightlights on the hair though, the master system couldn't handle that.
Alianger 4 years ago
Sorry, it does have a highlight. Anyway it is Green.

Yep, you're right about the Dark World Prince. The sprite looks like Tom Tom though (I'm guessing that's meant to be a horn on his head)
dilb80 4 years ago
Some of this info is completeley wrong though :P
Tom-Tom (Bock Lee Temjin) was the hero in Wonder Boy, Super Wonder Boy: Monster World/Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and Wonder Boy 3: Dragon's Trap/Dragon's Curse (TG16 version)/Monster World 2. He was never brown-haired..
