He simply called them "unbelievers", revoked all press cards from journalists, placed the country on clampdown and had them all shot. The whole affair was so brutal and arbitrary that it was said on the streets of Tehran that, in their haste to execute the "hypocrites", a number of people not meant to be executed were mistakenly sent to their deaths along with the others. You will not see too many Iranians in Iran praising this man...

Closer to 10,000 and that is not including the murderous Iran-Iraq war which he arrogantly demanded to be continued after a cease fire was due to be reached in 1982.  During a five month period encompassing 1987-88 alone, he ordered the execution of 5,000 leftists, most of whom were due to be released after having served their jail terms.

Being invaded is one thing, arrogantly demanding that the war be continued, when an honorable cease fire was in reach, and at enormous cost to your own people, is another. Iran and Iranians continue to suffer 20 years later at a war that one psychopath started and another demanded to be continued for nothing other than personal narcissism...
