This was a great movie, all the music and stars wre amazing .The woman were so pretty. Joan leslie ,jane Wyman, Janis Page,Kitty Carllisle are beautiful.
It breaks my heart that people like Joan are going to leave us one of these years. I fell head over heels for her when I saw this movie years ago. What a classy lady.
This time in American history seems so much simpler. Though I know there was plenty of bad things happening, human nature, and folks being their bad selves, I can't help but love this time 1940's-50's.
Hollywood could learn something from this. People who can actually sing, dance, and speak the English language, regardless of their country of origin.
I'm a child of the 60's, but this has always been my favorite time. Maybe I'm just a sucker for Hollywood make-believe.
To me the movie itself ends up rather frivilous; I think Stage Door Canteen did a better job talking about the War. But I will say, the song in this clip is lovely:
"May angels up above watch over you and keep you safe, my love, until the dawn breaks through."
That could easily apply to how people felt during the War and wondering when it would end.
It's a shame there's not many comments for such a great movie and era. I'm not of that era, but I appreciate the example in all regards. The dedication, character, and style is long gone but not forgotten. Additional: women seem to look better during the WWII years. When America went to war in 2001, I wish someone would have brought back those hair styles and clothing line. How beautiful they were. Signed: Retired Army male.
Thanks for the nice note. Those were definitely fun days! By the time I came along, my grandfather had comfortably retired, but I met all of his old show business friends. My father, Stuart, was doing very-well as a television series writer, my mother was doing occasional acting parts, and here and there I did some acting as well. So, the whole family was in the business, and we all had, as you can imagine, a ball! I am currently doing screenplays, and doing a "legit" play. R.J.
Thanks so much for excerpting this. This was nominated that year for best song, and should have won, but doubtless I'm slightly prejudiced. The music was by my grandfather, M.K. Jerome, the lyric by Ted Koehler. I met Joan not too many years ago at a screening of another movie she did with my grandad, called "The Hard Way", and she spoke very warmly of him. Thanks again for posting this. R.J.
You're very welcome. They don't make songs like that anymore.
BTW, my hobby has been to get 'original soundtrack' recordings of all the oscar nominated & winning songs. I have all but about 5. Maybe now I'll try to get the video, too!

Black and white films turn kind of greenish when ripping them... I always add the "grayscale" to return them back to black & white...

Good grief, THAT's KC?
I was used to watching the over-the-hill, know-it-all version on To Tell The Truth re-runs!

I had a huge crush on Joan Leslie after watching this film on a wet Sunday afternoon 20 years ago, when I was 14. I've just remembered why...

I felt the same way about her after seeing Sgt. York interestingly enough on a Sunday afternoon around 20 years ago when I was 12.
