You can avoid yellow trap with the doghouse if you do both protected left turns first (both sides get red lights with green arrows) and then permissive left turns until perpendicular traffic goes
And quick question, why is there lag on yellow traps? I noticed when the lights changed to red for NB and SB and then for example NB and SB go both green for thru traffic, the flashing yellow arrow takes a second to go from solid red to flashing yellow. Same goes for when it goes Solid green to solid yellow then back to flashing yellow...
A couple of updates. The original yellow trap phasing during some trials as shown here did not include a yellow clearance interval based on the assumption that the flashing yellow arrow meant a non-protected turn. However the final MUTCD specs called for a standard yellow clearance indication between the green arrow and flashing yellow arrow. Currently there are studies underway regarding retroffiting of doghouses to also use the flashing yellow arrow.
did blue traffic lights ever exist? when i was a young kid i could have sworn i seen them. i read somewhere they did exist and were used for emergency vehicles?
I've seen these in Michigan since the old flashing red signals are being retired. However, this signal would only work on intersections with single left turn lanes. Don't even think about putting these on double left turn lanes.
Interesting video. I live in New York State. I've never seen an actual flashing yellow arrow anywhere in my state as of yet so it's possible they're not allowed here yet.
There are two intersections not far from my home that have the yellow trap problem that you describe here. The NYSDOT addressed the problem by installing signs saying "Oncoming traffic may have extended green".
Those intersections are rather busy and using red arrows for the left turns would have been a much better design.
Yep. Doghouses will no longer be installed over, or to the left of, left turn pockets. Protected / Permissive left turns will be 4 in-line heads with flashing yellow arrows. (For readers of Mudimush's post, "FYA" = flashing yellow arrow.) Also the short clearance is only supposed to occur in the field signal when opposing traffic is red although I'll check. Clearance interval duration is a critical issue to consider, however.
@Mudimush I have installed several of these systems now in Arkansas and the sequence should be a protected left turn green arow, followed by a solid yellow arrow, then solid red arrow, then to a permissive left turn flashing yellow arrow.
The flickering red is an effect between a very rapidly flashing red signal and the scanning rate of the camera.
There is a bad design in the field installation. The flashing yellow arrow face should never have a shorter clearance interval than the straight ahead faces. It should always have a longer clearance, or yel;low trap could happen briefly.
I have a traffic signal and I need a relay for it and switches to change the color.

Can you do a demonstration of a 3 section yellow trap signal?

We started getting these signals in our state. I didn't know what they were. Thanks for the info.

What you should do, focus on opposing traffic and not the lamp when you're engaged. A red lamp won't kill you but a oncoming car can.

I see these lights on every intersection here in Frankfort, Kentucky. I can't stand them.

You have to display the upper yellow arrow as a change interval after the green arrow before the flashing yellow arrow is allowed to be displayed.
