in new jersey you can get historical plates or classic plates, both of which allow you to be exempt from inspection (blinkers wipers head lights are all unneeded) your car does have to be 25 or more years of age and you can only drive it 3000 miles a year though.

To our Italian friend who asked about getting License Plates, the answer is yes. In fact, many states have special 'old timey' license vanity plates you can get I think one state says "horseless carriage" at the top.
