If I ever hear another person bag on the 80's for sucking musically I'll just take my vinyl copy of this and smash it on their head. Not many albums are as magical as this.
The Woodentops were a live band and Rolo McGinty was such a talented songwriter. A lot of his songs reminded me of Lou Reed's music on the first and third Velvet Underground albums.
caligari, there's really no one else sounds like the Woodentops - live or in studio, for that matter. Closest might be Lilac Time to WT's studio stuff.
hey peopl hiya. the accordian was played by jack emblow who did the grace jones accordion amongst other. no we didnt sanction sargeant, record co. did. he was sharp though, a lot learned from him, just not hard enough! the rough mixes kick the ass but the final mixes were a bit geared towards radio. thats why we put out the live lp str8 after.thanks for your lil debate there.
The accordion is probably Bob Sargeant's influence. On the band's request, he produced this album. I remember Rolo saying that he wasn't entirely satisfied with the production because it was a bit too slick -- but I've always felt the opposite: that the slickness is what elevates it from the "rough draft" feel of their other stuff. Nobody else sounds like the Woodentops, but you can hear similar production styles on English Beat's "Special Beat Service" -- which Sargeant also produced.
Is there any group you can recommend me with the same sound? Benn a WT fan since the beginning and it's hard to find a similar sound. Love the accordeon in this.
Absolutely fantastic!!

Also, if you like the WTs studio work, you might want to look into the Mighty Lemon Drops and the Go-Betweens.

Waa! News from the very source!
Thanks for setting me straight.
Now I'm curious about those rough mixes, even though I love the album as it is.

"Save if for Later" from the Beat album would be a good place to start. It bears some similarity to this song.
This song and "Everything Breaks" are my favorites from "Giant". Thanks for uploading!
