  • I LOVE the scene with them saying the love each other; but they went with the book on the scenery. I think what they should have done is what they did with 96 Emma; Start with them being in the garden then walk to a tree; for the reveal. I KNOW; the were walking period in the 96 version. I'm just saying in the 96 version the tree in the background; was SOO romantic!! The Panout was EVEN MORE romantic!!

  • I dont care what u say about her hairstyle; I like it!! I agree about Harriets it is weird looking!!

  • I swear my bones turn to jelly when he porposes to her xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • must be awkward to hide behind a bush...

  • I love what they did with this version. In the Gwyneth Paltrow version, Emma was much more of an adult. Here we get to see her as a woman who is still very enthusiastic and younger acting, so exuberant and happy.

Also, there need to be more Mr. Knightlys in the world.

  • i LOVE 6:20 AND if i loved you less i might be able to talk about more - AMAZING

  • these dang type of books are the reason so many men fall short!!!!

  • This is a different version than the one on tv, are those extra scenes on the DVD?

  • @Katharos703 Yes, the extra scenes are on the DVD. Some scenes were cut out of the American production that was shown on PBS's Masterpiece.

  • I think this is the best version ever. Thanks BBC made this DVD!!!!

  • Poor, poor Knightley!

  • (cries)

  • Am I the only one whose heart completely breaks when he says, "I will obey you."?

  • "I do not mind what we talk of. You can talk of Harriet if you must." ^.^

  • I think my face cracked in half from smiling. And screaming. And burying it in the blanket.

That kiss was so damn satisfying :')

  • @sokratine19 And also, it's Jane AustEn, nos Austin!!

  • lol@ her failed attempt at hiding behind the bush

  • This film doesnot really understand the time, Jane Austin live in! A women of this time would never, never touch a young man! She would never start to kiss him from herself. I am very dissapointed.

  • @sokratine19

You my friend do not understand women...in any time... peace

  • @fauxgrace :

And you my friend should study the way women live in the 17th century! It was even impossible to touch the hand of a man. Have you read the books from Jane Austin? Have a nice day :-)

  • @sokratine19

Emma, as well as Jane Austin's other characters (and the author herself), lived at the end of 18th - beginning of 19th century, not 17th.

  • @sokratine19 I agree the kissy scene was very unbecoming, even when Frank and Ms. Fairfax kissed. This is my only dislike of the movie.

  • Some people say that Romola Garai is not... graceful enough... not enough filled the time's manners... ?? No. she is perfect... always a good heart... naive... a real girl as opposed to a retrojected political propaganda piece for our times. She is very human and that was what was so appealing. She is also very feminine, beautiful and rounded... not the emaciated semi masculine shapes that we have been made to think are women today. There will be other Emmas ... but Romola is wonderful.

  • I've read the book a few times before and I still feel the garden/proposal scene rather hasty and abrupt. The 1996 movie version handled this sequence much smoother where the dreadfulness in Emma and happy eagerness in Knightley are palpable and tender.

  • Romola Garai's Emma is so good, on par with Gwyneth Paltrow! However, as much as I like Miller (watch him in Mansfield Park), I prefer Jeremy Northam. The way he delivered his love was much more intimate and emotional. Miller did not seem comfortable squinting under the harsh light in the middle of an open garden. I feel that the director could have done better in choosing a more romantic setting for the proposal scene.

  • 8:52 is by far the sweetest look on Emmas face I've ever seen. It tells me just how much she loves Knightly.

  • @lalala13nhc I've always felt that Knightley and Miss Fairfax "deserve" each other more and that Mr. Churchill and Emma have more in common than they do with their partners. Emma and Churchill even recognize this and discuss it in the book. But I agree that it doesn't make Emma any less lovable - though Austen said that she thought she was the only one who would love Emma. Anyway, why do heroines always have to be perfect, but heros can be full of flaws?

  • 4:35 Emma doesn't want Mr Knightley to confess as she thinks that he will tell her that he likes Harriet and that Emma won't be able to handle the truth.

  • @magicrystalina Is it just me, or was that fact sort of elusive in this series? I've read the book, so I knew why she didn't want him to speak, but I thought something about the pacing and placement of the scenes made it hard to pick up on in this version. Too bad since it's sort of crucial. Maybe others were able to get it though. Maybe I'm the dunce. :)

  • 7:08 you can just imagine Mr Woodhouse looking out the window.

    EMMAAAAAAA!

  • Can't stop watching long enough to comment!

  • I blame Mr Knighley for my unrealistically high expectations of men!

  • @FrostedPingu

    Me too!!! :P

  • @FrostedPingu i know right!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @FrostedPingu How I look at it is; the Austen men: Mr. Darcy; Captain Wentworth; Mr. Knightly; Mr. Bertram; and so on. Are what a man SHOULD be; don't see it as high expectations; that what a man should be. WE shouldn't have to lower our standards; society lowered men's standards!!

  • @FrostedPingu I agree...its all Jane Austen's fault :)

  • I wish I could find a Mr. Knightley!! There must be one out there for me, because my real name is truly Emma.

  • "if I loved you less i might be able to speak about it more" has got to be on par with the "allow me to tell you how adently i admire and love you " line in my books :')

  • I get all warm and fuzzy when they are simply holding each others faces...it is so romantic sorry to sound all dreamy, but I hope to God I find a man like Mr. Knightly one day.

  • Continued.....sorry stupid iPod won't let me finsh my comment anyway the Emma of chapter one certainly didn't deserve knightly but by the end she had changed drastically and was definitively going to make a great mrs knightly. great acting on garai's part though

  • @fleurgi yes you are Probaly the minority but I wonder have you actually read the novel? Generally movies don't explain the characters development as well as the novel, when I watched this movie I also thought mr knightly too good for her, but once I read the book I thought differently the Emma of chapter one Cretan

  • i know i'm in the minority her but i dislike emma and do not think she deserves the kind mr. knightley. but then maybe i am just a little jealous but she is such a pot stirrer and the like

  • Oh.My.Gosh. That was the cutest kiss of all time!!!

  • abominable scoundrel! I love pre-Victorian literature insults!

  • I love how she's trying to hide behind a bush.

  • If only men like Knightley existed in real life...

  • Wonderful... I only wish, that the camera would have lingered just one or two seconds longer on his face when she puts her hands around it, and he closes his eyes - the exact moment that he realises that she actually does love him - "The affection which he had been asking to be allowed to create, if he could, was already his." - as Austen puts it.

  • @hvilborg Yeah, I agree. It would've been nice.

  • Thank you for uploading this! Thank you very much.

To add to the discussion, I love Romola's Emma. I really do. It's different from Gwyneth's interpretation, and I like that they are different. But I still don't like Miller's Mr. Knightley. (I feel like Romola's Emma is going to kick his butt in their marriage =)) He doesn't look/sound to me like somebody who is 16 years older. And I don't like some of his expressions. But I did like some of his scenes.

  • @JDlamusique I love them both, but tend to agree with you that JLM seems perhaps just a little bit young for Mr. Knightley - though he was actually 36 I think when doing the series - so quite precisely Mr. Knightleys age...

  • @hvilborg Oh, was he? Really? Huh...

Yeah, as you've mentioned, he seems a bit young, and in this case, I just get this vibe from him like he's a kid. And I get a different vibe from Mr. Knightley as a character, if you know what I mean. So, every time I listen to him saying that he's known Emma since her birth and he's 16 years older, it makes me laugh =)

  • Romola Garai is the best Emma!!

  • Which of the Emma movies stays true to the book? I really need to read the book because I love the lines in the Gwyneth Paltrow version and this one has less but I haven't read the book so I don't know which is correct. I think movies should stick to the book....some movies don't turn out well because of it....

  • @lmbgemini Each version is pretty true to the book; each draws out different aspects of the book. I've seen three versions that I love to pieces - the old A&E with Kate Beckinsale, this one, and the newer Masterpiece Theatre one - and while they're different and there are different things that they've cut or added, I think they're all beautifully done.

  • Ugh! Sweetest confession. I loved this scene. Best Emma ever made. Bravo BBC. These characters feel alive out of Jane Austen's book~

  • that scene on the bench has got to be one of the loveliest scenes ever :)

  • ilove it!!!

  • And there you were... Love them talking on the bench

  • Finally! Waited a long time for this scene.

  • I wish Emma wore her red dress dress or coat in this scene, it suits her skin so well... Lucky girl she gets to kiss JLM....lol

  • I wish Emma wore her red dress dress or coat in this scene, it suits her skin so well...

  • Johnny Lee Miller aged rather well.

  • Dear God, pleeeeeease send me someone like Mr. Knighly just maybe a few years younger!! Please!

  • I do not mind what we talk of, we can talk of Harriet.

    AHdorable :D

  • I think it is just the weather but I LOVE that after emma tells mr knightly not to continue it goes grey.

And I lovelovelove this adaption, seen it SO many times, Romola Garai is by far the best Emma :D And SO stunning.

  • 5:34 mr Knightly is so cute!!!!!!!!!

  • Poor Emma she is most definatly NOT well.

Ahh,poor Mr. Knightly he is just trying to tell her want she want's to hear and because she was silly matching other people off she thinks he is going to tell her he is going to marry Harrriet, but he thinks she doesn't love him.:(

  • Poor Emma she is most definatly NOT well.

  • LOL at emma hiding behind the bush.

  • her hiding behind the tree and peeking out from behind it with that smile made me laugh soo hard! that was amazing! loved it!

  • :') sweetest couple EVER!!!!! jonny is quite handsome :)

  • @sashhi25 only quite??

  • Romola Garai is one of the best actresses ever :)

  • Thanks for posting :D

This version is by far the best, with the best cast :)

  • i agree! i enjoyed the Gwyneth Paltrow version but not as much as this one. Jonny and Romola have a chemistry that just oozes from the screen. I love watching them, especially when they are disputing. LOVE IT!!!

  • This is officially my favorite Emma!!! Romola and JLM are just perfect for the roles... have to watch this once again...

  • @lulubibi100 i have watched this version about 5 times. you never get tired of it!!!!

  • Way to hide behind a tree that is not big enough.

  • I love how Mr Knighley sighs deeply as he comes out of the house--it's like he's just heard Mr. Woodhouse confirm that Emma has been mopey/sad for the last while...and he really is concerned to find her/console her....

  • "Abominable scoundrel!!" LOL

  • Back again for another gorgeous meltdown and drool... this is WONDERFUL and the actors are totally sublime too... Well done JLM and Romola, you have totally stolen my heart.. *swoons again, into near-by chair frantically fanning* :0)X

  • Damn, I have tears running all over my face....

  • 7:00 most awkward kissing shot EVER. Why are his arms just hanging down? :P

  • @wendyoffroad if you look one of his arms is raised after about one second but it is on the other side

  • @wendyoffroad I agree but I always wonder if it's on purpose. We are to assume that these characters (of that time) had never kissed or been kissed, so I guess it's the awkwardness of a very first kiss- not knowing quite what to do with yourself! That's my assumption, anyways. :)

  • "I examined my own heart. And there you were... never I fear, to be removed."

    Omg I love that!!!

    I love Mr. Knightley!!!

  • "I do not mind what we talk of, we can talk of Harriet if we must." hahaha Knightly keeps making me laugh. love him :)

  • awww Knightly seems to really like holding babies. Lol

  • I love how Mr Knightley is playing with little Emma... He sure has a weakness for Emmas x)

  • that little caress of his face was perfect.and victorian kissing:)

how i love this adaption.just perfect

  • @Orlaithja000 Emma isn't set in the Victorian era. It's a romantic novel and takes place in the Romantic era... You know like Edwardian and Georgian.

  • It's probably even more correct to call it the Regency era, if we use references to the current royal rulers of Britain. It almost completely overlaps with what we call the Romantic period of course, but that is less of a historical term and mostly refers to the arts of that time. It is also a philosophical concept like the Englightenment according to some scholars we still live in the Romantic era.

  • @Orlaithja000 Victorian kissing? There is still a lot for me to learn.

  • Romola Garai is the most perfect, she IS Emma. Jonny Lee Miller is Mr. Knightley. Each character is played so perfectly. This is by far, and none equal, the best Emma. There is no way around it.

  • @AnnieBanana978 you are so correct. I cannot imagine any other in this role now. It's sad because I cannot watch the older versions without cringing now :D

  • @AnnieBanana978 I was never a great fan of Jane Austen but this was , as you say, perfect.

  • @AnnieBanana978 I heartily agree!

  • @AnnieBanana978 I totally agree.

  • MR. KNIGHTLEY I LOVE YOU!!!!

  • this makes me so happy.

    By far best adaptation

  • when emma and knightley sat ont he bench...my heart went gah gah-i'm so happy for them <3

  • I watched three versions of (Jane Austen's) Emma over the last couple of days..this one, the 1996 one with Paltrow, and then the 1996 one with Beckinsale.

This is the best version of Emma ..hands down !! Completely agree with goodmunki about the acting and casting...the characters are portrayed so well..and extremely naturally ! BRILLIANT!!

  • i wish emma would of tell mrs Weston that she is in love it was one of my favorite part of the movie with Paltrow, that would of made this my favorite version

  • @adriaDythea I 100% agree! Then you get to see her all bubbly with her feelings :D

  • "I examined my own heart.....and there you were." That has to be the sweetest line I've ever heard.

  • @RPtheTruth I was never a Jane Austen fan but as you so rightly say, perfect.

  • @RPtheTruth Most definately, if only men still spoke like this!

  • she is the greatest Emma, a fantastic actress well done indeed!

  • I have watched several adaptations of Emma and like a previous post, I thought Kate Bekinsale's was the best until I saw this one. It's just perfect and the actress that played Emma was superb! I just loved watching her expressions, it was so much fun! I will be buying this movie and adding it to my collection of Jane Austen's movie adaptations.

  • The kissing part was very romantically done. Very sweet!!

  • The best of all the Emma adaptations, no doubt! Am I the only one to love more Jane and Frank than Emma and Mr. Knightley?

  • @cahvalois yes. lol but i think its sweet how they had frank and jane meet (think in previous vid) it showed he really loved Jane.

  • @cahvalois I suppose u are ;) I LOVE mr Knightley and HIS Emma <3

  • @mywishLE Hahhaa, that's ok! The problem in all adaptations is that Jane is always undervalued, Jane from the book is so enchanting!

  • :]:] I just melted into a puddle from 5:50 onwards. Need tissues now lol. Thanks for posting!

  • This is the best adaptation of Emma I've seen so far. Emma is likable and Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightly was swoon worthy.. and their banters were top notch!!

p.s. @mondrudru ... thanks a lot for posting this series.. Fabulous quality videos, best yet I've seen on youtube! :)

  • *ahhhh swoons yet again*... don't you just love the bit where Emma says ".. I was talking to Harriet..." and Knightley says ".. I don't mind what we talk of, we can talk of Harriet if you like..." and she laughs... I wonder if that was an ad-lib... because it seems so natural... LOVE It, love it love it.. Did I say I love it, because I really do... Oh happy me indeed :0)x

  • "I blush when I think of some of the things I said and did..." Don't we all. And THAT is exactly what I love JA for. The little things that aren't very important, yet make all the difference because they make the reader relate so perfectly well to the character. Ah no, now I need to go get my dose of Austen, or I won't be happy. =P

  • Watched again and... YEP.... I am still loving this version above all others... Happy me indeed... *sighs deeply in total contentment* :0)x

  • it only took four episodes for this chick to see the neo-classical light!

  • I used to think Kate Beckinsale's Emma was my favourite but now after watching this version I have 'TOTALLY' changed my mind... Love it love it... Johnny Lee Miller as Mr Knightley and Romola Garai as Emma are superb and I have now watched this version a lot in fact I am upto my 20th session now... Happy me :0)x

  • Comment removed

  • @TheDoctorrWho gotta be the dumbest comment on You tube!

  • this is definately my favorite part of the entire film. it's so cute. but they're hilarious when they're fighting!

  • It's so frustratingly romantic the way the that neither of them know the other loves them and so they keep it to themselves when we are sitting here screaming at them to just say it already!!! lol :)

  • I am such a geek. All I can think of as he is kissing her is, all those windows! What if Mr. Woodhouse looks out...what if the servants see and begin to talk..Ack! Ack! Ack!

I actually look towards the windows with a knot in my stomach. Like I said, what a geek.

  • @jennyallworthy i thought the same thing!

  • Mr. Knightly's gentle caresses on the bench scene are so incredibly tender and, well frankly, very sexy. With his one hand distractedly playing with hers and his other gently on her neck, it is one of the most heart achingly sweet scenes I have ever seen. I can't believe that Masterpiece Theatre cut this scene out when they aired it. Thank you for posting this and thank goodness the scene is in the DVD. Yay!

  • This version is lovely, but my favorite will always be the one with Paltrow :) I guess I'm stubborn that way.

  • haha ya me too... I think my favorite Knightly is the Paltrow one :)

  • What I would give if I could be Emma...

  • 7:43 my heart melt. Mr Knightley looks like a boy.

  • this is like the millionth time i have wached this now i love it sooooooo much!

  • @ElfoBlanco But Mr.Knightley as well...those two takes of breath when Emma approaches are gut-wrenching!!

  • may i ask why emma says she will "put the record straight?" Did they even HAVE records back then?!

  • @aislingconnell lol, not vinyl records, written records :D

  • @embreydl u'd know i was blonde lol :P

  • @aislingconnell .. maybe Emma means record... as in 'record of an event'... What a fantastic version of Jane Austen's fabulous book... :0)x

  • This is truly romantic! Their confessions were so heartfelt and too long over due.

  • i love how in this adaption they have the part of mr. knightley explaining the love he feels for emma on the bench. Its so romantic!!! I Love this actor so much!!

  • I'm glad they took out that 'I held you when you were 3 1/2 weeks old' line from the Beckinsale version. :]

  • I thought Mark Strong did the best job of portraying Mr. Knightly's evolution from the surrogate older brother of Ema's young years through the struggle with her adolescent selfishness into the strong but sexy lover of her adulthood.

  • Oh, my goodness. Obviously something went wrong on the OPB website when I watched this the first time on their website because after the kissing scene it went straight to the part where she tells him she won't leave her father.

  • i think every adaptation has it's merits. It's just a fantastic story! JA was a great story-teller. This version has the best Mr Knightly i've ever seen JLM plays it perfectly and emma is also very strong. Don't forget Austen intended the audience not to like Emma until she sees the error of her ways. I think they've got it just right here. Brilliant

  • i agree, the beckinsale strong version is great, but i personally think that all of the emma adaptations are fabulous - the best overall of any austen book

they all have a few greats, but the consistancy of the emma adaptations is way higher

  • "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more."

    So true and so sweet.

  • hey the book is pretty good!

  • 1:51 is the best part.

  • Microeconomicssucks he was just acting frigid in his role, but in real life he was married at one time to angelina Jolie ... don't think anyone could be frigid around her lol

  • Wow, I think she played that part beautifully--when he is talking to her of his feelings and she has to respond.

  • Well matched this two- Love them- this version of Emma is really the best.

  • "I will obey you." My gosh he sounds so cute!

  • @ blue not in the book Emma says 'You may command me'

  • I love the way she touches him, so gentle and caring. Oh, how I love this Mr. Knightly!!!! So sexy and a gentleman, wish I had a magic wand and"whosh" in my living room so I can stare at him all day.. JLM you are up there with Colin Firth and Rupert Penry-Jones. xoxoxoxxo Mr. Knightly

  • The best version of Emma! Everybody plays perfectly.

  • I like JLM as Mr. Knightlley very much, but I think that Romola is too foolish and loudmouthed for Emma. Kate Beckinsale plays her a lot better and I prefer that version with Mark Strong.

  • O no, I have to admit I am disappointed, I expected more passion more chemistry between them ( like in version with Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong) and I simply can't find it here, Mr Knightly could be a little bit more suprised and happier when Emma shows her feelings for him!? And I know Emma is a little childish but they both looks like children when they kiss. Is there anybody who thinks the same?

  • he does look kinda frigid...but I think that is how he is meant to be :)

  • It looks like he's trying not to cry when she stops him!

  • Well, it was probably a first kiss for both. They didn't kiss 30 people before finding their true love/ getting engaged. An age of innocence... To some, childishness.

  • alright, calm down. I was just making a point. I didn't mean it like that anyways
