  • Love that Matrix display, I bet in 1976 that was the most expensive item in the stadium.

  • I see me Country at 8:25

    Go Bahamas!!!!

  • Unfortunately not: 3 hrs !!!

  • @rigaudien You could just split the video up into multiple parts and then upload the clips one by one.

  • oh canada at the opening ceremony was the only time those poor bastards heard their national anthem at these games!!

  • @TheTzdope It was the only Games ever when the country presenting them didn't win a gold medal, you're right. But the anthem was played as well at the closing ceremonies for ("these poor bastards" [sic] )

  • I respect the Boycotting countries, I have nothing against Canada, BUT the IOC should be ashamed for not banning a Pro-apartheid country that year, ITS TAKES COURAGE TO STAND FOR WHAT'S RIGHT!

  • @Killed8Times South Africa was not in the Games.

  • 3:17, U R S S on billboard.. lol

  • @joman66 That's how it was abbreviated in French.

  • how come this doesn't show israel walking in? i think that their entrance is kinda important...

  • @96horseluvr Yes, you're right. I remember that moment well. The flag bearer that year was the young woman sprinter/hurdler who's coach was killed in Munich. Their flag had 11 black ribbons on it.

  • The Queen could speak French?

  • @Roodosutaa Oui Sa Majesté La Reine peut parler le français. Yes, HM the Queen speaks French. She is not only the Queen of UK, but also of Canada, which is a bilingual country. The host city being Montréal in Québec which is French-speaking, she opened the Games by delivering a message in French is thoughtful and considerate, as French is one of the two official languages of IOC and throughout Québec there is a history of anti-British sentiments and French is the official language of Québec.

  • @Roodosutaa The Queen learned French whilst a youngster. As Canada is pat of her dominion, and she has made numerous visits to this bilingual country, she has delivered many speeches in both English and French, or a combination of both.

  • somebody should put out recording of the infamous naked man dancing around disturbing dance performance

  • @ThePalmetadon That was during the closing ceremonies.

  • @ThePalmetadon Err... the guy was in the CLOSING ceremonies... not these ! LOLLLLLLL Anyways you're right: what a dumbo...

  • Didn't this opening have a ballet of some sort??

  • Thanks for the vid. Nice touch by HM to open the Games in French

  • people wore colorful pant suits and bell bottoms back in the day lol

  • faka south africa!

  • What I find strange about the olympic stadium nowadays is that you can still see the East German flag flying high among the other flags, yet the Soviet flag is nowhere to be seen.

  • I have VHS tapes of 1980,1984,1988,1992,1996,2000,2004,2008 opening & closing ceremonies. It would be too long & difficult to up-load all these!

  • @rossstuart100 Could you just do 1988?? That would be fine. :)

  • @rossstuart100 ohhhh please SHARE THEM!!!!! pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee............. :( thanks! :)

  • @rossstuart100 Please upload the Parade of Nations of 1980!

  • its to bad nobody has the whole thing of the opening ceremony

  • @gjaylen5 I do. Closing as well.

  • I wish they had played the canaidian national anthem like that at Vancouver

  • @gjaylen5 A great version. So good that CBC played it for years at the end the the TV programming (Englisg and French network)

  • I wish the roof could still open.... :(

  • @yvoe9 good point

  • viva Rene Levesque !! viva le quebec libre !!!

  • @aereo1973

Québec libre mon ami !!! :-)

  • Even though I'm not Canadian, I was almost crying after listening to this anthem! This version is so beautiful!

  • @VWatch07 Agreed !

  • back then why does the olympic cauldron have to be so small? no one can see it

  • Rio 2016 \o/

  • olympics rio 2016

  • Vancouver Olympics Were Awesome!!!

  • Hmm I don't think they spoke enough english here... It doesn't represent our bilingual country very well.

  • Hmm, I thought that they were gonna light the olympic flame on the top of the tower. But I guess at that time the tower was not complete yet. It's very nice to see that now they light the olympic flame on cauldrons!

  • The very recording of "O Canada" performed at the opening ceremony of the 1976 Montreal Olympics had been used for more than 20 years afterward by the CBC for its television sign-on and sign-off.

I still have an original vinyl copy of the 1976 Olympics soundtrack album.

  • @SkeeterVT I wish they played this version of the anthem during the Vancouver Olympics. Extremely riveting and emotional to listen to! It's a shame we didn't hear it in Montreal. :(

  • @SkeeterVT Me too. A gem !

  • @t5239857289578947594 Yes indeed !

  • it actually has nothing to do with canada that it is in french. The official language of the olympics itself is french.

that's why they always spoke french first then english this year.

  • @gillybean37 canada is offically bilugal nation english and french are their official languages....

  • @gillybean37 and montreal is a french city roughly 90% of the people there speak french =D

  • @pao1233 But they speak English on the streets, surprisingly, lol!

  • @Charles45633 It was bilingual.. damn loser

  • huh because montreal is a french city stupid vancouver is both

  • i found on wikipedia that canada is bilingual maybe it has to do with legislation... dunno

  • actually the official language of the olympics is French, but yes there is a bill 101, which is annoying at times lol for english people at least, to answer your question Bashnutter, I dont want to offend any french people, he just wanted to know. @chixxgirl2 @Bashnutter @chvick

  • lol and english people are annoying at times for frenchies too... :D

  • It would be until 1988 that Canada's Governor General would finally declare open any Olympics held in that country.

  • I'm up in the stands somewhere.

  • ah ah! Boys and girls are separated X3

  • Des plus brillants expoits!!!!!

  • the stadium looked alot better before they got rid of the seats where the scoreboard is. They should also take the roof off so maybe they could use it for something again. It serves no purpose as an indoor stadium. No roof would make it better for concerts too

  • when did they stop having the flag handover ceremony at the opening?

  • @wl03bu: They no longer do that at the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics. :D

  • Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics: WITH GLOWING HEARTS. Can't wait... I'm from the Philippines, a country that has hardly participated in the Winter Olympics. Hopefully Vancouver's will be as good as this and Calgary's!

  • VANCOUVER 2010!!! welcome the world back to Canada

  • Before the Moscow Games, the Olympic ceremonies were really basic. It was very formal and military with almost no drama. Look at the way the athletes marched in Montreal. With precision. Today they wander in like they are walking the red carpet. Moscow added the theatrical part. I'm sure it was a planned innovation but it helped take away some of the sting of the boycott since the parade of athletes wasn't the center focus any more.

  • maybe not ALL were military ;-)... just search for youtube clips of munich 1972 ceremony - of course its much more formal than today, but it seemed to be a bit more relaxed than the 1976 ceremony

  • @nosuchpersonvideo Munich 1972 had mariacchis, children dancing to "Sumer is icumen in" with flowers, and a poem read with weird psychadelic music. Also, it had VERY catchy parade of nations music.

  • @cgsilverscreen2020 Montreal also had Bavarian dancers, rhythmic gymnasts and other minor performances on the track. At that time, the flag hand over happened at the Opening Ceremony where a tribute was paid to the previous host country. But the point is ceremonies before 1980 were much more simplified by comparison to today's standards of massive floor performances, fireworks, projections, and celebrity appearances.

  • Wow for that National Anthem. The violins are awesome towards the end, gave me shivers.

  • i hate to say this, but why is the ceremony so bland? Did it become artistic beginning with Moscow 1980???

  • There was a more elaborate opening ceremony, by the standards of the time, but yes it was only in the 80s that opening ceremonies really got theatrical

  • Is this the standard version of the National Anthem, or do I only recognize it because it's become so popular?

  • Although I am Australian, but the version of, 'O Canada' at Montreal was fantastic and intense!

I hope they play this similar score at the 2010 Vancouver Games!

  • If the music for Vancouver is half as good as the music was for Montreal, the ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics will be impressive indeed.

  • we need a full version (Trying to find my dad)

  • Je me Souviens .... merci

  • je ne me souviens pas... lol... I wasn't born yet at that time...

  • They used to play this version of "O Canada" in the mornings at my high school...despite the sounds quality, still my favourite arrangement...much more dramatic.

  • how sad that no one upload a whole tape ceremony of Summer Olympic 1976 , 1988 & 1968
