  • Planet were man is slave to ape.

  • "This was the pre-cursor to "He-man!"

  • John Blackstar IS TONY DANZA

  • Still remember this cartoon

  • I always thought He-man was a recycled version of this show.

  • Sort of the Buck Rogers premise, with Rambo thrown off course, finding a sword similar to He-man's sword of power, fighting guys that come from the Herculoids planet, and probably a distant cousin of Thundarr (lords of light you know) all the while on a planet that looks remarkably like Eternia. Oh and he sounds so much like Bo from Etheria.

  • Man,do I miss the good ol days of saturday morning toons, they need to bring this stuff back on the air again. Blackstar, yeah he was one I also remembered from my childhood of the 80's.

  • coo coo

  • I remember having some of the toys for this cartoon, but I don't remember the cartoon lol same with a lot of these cartoon intros I'm seein here, like Thundarr the Barbarian

  • ...is it just me or does his female companion look strangely like burstinitrix from Yu-Gi-Oh GX? maybe it's just me

  • I remember there was an episode where Overlord was able to combine both swords, but i forgot how black star was still able to beat him.

  • hahaha the narrator makes it sounds like a documentary ..

  • It's like Thundarr meets the Smurfs.

  • OFWGKTA

  • "In turn he joins their fight", no shit. Like he had anything else to do?

  • @BTeamHooligan And you think you would have a ghost of a chance against the overlord.

  • If you're not wearing a loincloth or a leotard, you simply aren't a cartoon superhero.

  • From what I understand, Blackstar was originally suppose to be.....African American.

Instead the powers that be decided to play it safe and make him Native American.

  • so he's like a futuristic snow white then. he has some dwarves to help him and he's fighting an evil queen.

  • The overlay is when the Overloard is introduced, and you see real smoke / clouds behind him.

  • The sword split and the goodguy and badguy each get half? Sounds like in Legend of Zelda when Triforce splits and the goodguy, the badguy, and the princess each get a thrid of it.

  • @BankaiIchigo12345

actually it sounds even more like "He Man and the Masters of the Universe" which was made very soon after this by the very same people.

  • Nice overlay of live & animated effects... You rarely see that even this decade, if at all.

  • @DesertWatcher

Where's the Live Action effects? I don't see em.

  • @BankaiIchigo12345 the explosions at the beginning I'm guessing

  • @BankaiIchigo12345 the explosions at the beginning I'm guessing.

  • 0:57 ...no relation to john redcorn.

  • Loved this when I was a kid. "..This is his destiny..I am John Blackstar!" thanx for posting.

  • very nice cartoon

  • I had a lot of these toys; each major character came with a sidekick: the good guys with a Trobbit and the bad with some sort of goblin-like creature. Of course, I enjoyed the Overlord toy the best. Hindsight, bring these back to me!

  • Elemental Hero Burstinatrix from YuGiOh looks too much like that lady at 0:48 ...

  • Trobbit's? Hmmm!

  • @madloz76 Exactly!!! :D Also, why is the hero always an American pilot? I like his name though, it does sound like it is his destiny: "black star" (nibiru/stargate)

  • I think I remember this one. :)

  • oh man, this was He-Man BEFORE there was He-man...i LOVED this when i was like 7 or 8 yrs old!

  • oh man, this was He-Man BEFORE there was He-man...

  • @dmariomc yep. It had the same producers:)

  • i loved this when i was a kid...but now i only remember the episode with the giant robot

  • Unlike many cartoons of this day, this had an "ending". The Overlord fell into a valcano and "perished". I enjoyed watching this except, for the Time Lord episode. I hated it, because it took "poetic justice" to far.

  • one of the best toons from back in the day. Dungeons and dragons was prob my fav but this was in my top 5. i watched this when i was 5 or 6 years old and loved it. i had the toy of blackstar that had the glow in the dark sword. i have this and D&D on dvd ;)

  • ""i am john blackstar"".....no shit!!

  • Yo, he is John Blackstar you know :)

  • mmm...absorbed by a black hole...where a heard it before?...¡Farscape!

  • @BatAleph I dont know about "before". Blackstar is 18 yrs older than farscape.

  • yo this use to be my shit!!!!

  • this is my all-time favorite !!!

  • i watched this when i was like 7 or 8... still remember that one eyed dinosaur... still gives me the creeps...

  • Wow! I had no idea how similar Blackstar was to Buck Rogers and Hobbits! I do remember this being much like Thundar the Barbarian.

  • @Allanforbes Fantasy has certain rules, obviously they all talk about something similar, so one recognizes the patterns.

  • Don't forget MumRA and MONSTAR!

  • goddamn, I miss those Filmmation toons....

  • Oh yeah, I remember that I used to have an Overlord figure.

  • @voidingindigo Overlords seem so funny now! (some are very gay) I wonder why we never get to see their points of view?

  • planet sega?

  • That was just a sweet retro fix for me - the 70s and 80s had the best cartoons period!

  • suberb!!!!!!

  • the cruel overlord, skeletor and venger were the coolest bad guys EVER.
