i find this very good indeed for early beginners like me as he puts the name of the chord and where i should put my fingers for each fret , as looking them up can sometimes be a nightmare! thanks man this is good help me for me 5*!!
crap I identified the chord wrong, the first chord is actually a Dmaj7, but the fingering is correct and the same as his Dmaj7 from this video. my bad :)
thank you so much nextlevelguitar!! this lesson helped me out a lot and i even made my own progression out of it by changing 1 chord, adding 1 chord, and changing the pattern.
Thanks for the straight forward lesson. A nice chord progression to play around with, just right for my level of playing, or learning. I can work with this and build on it. Peace
Look at the notes being used for a B minor chord (bar at the second fret and do a A minor shape) and all those notes....in the B minor..each and every one of them....he played them as 7th chords ex: F#7 ..that's why they sounds "pretty" together. Hope that helps.
Because the notes all come from the same scale. If you learn your scales, then you can learn chords that hold those notes in each scale and then you have sounds that work together. If you play the b minor scale, you can play a great leed that goes with this progresstion
Great video. But, I don't think it's good to teach people to hit all the strings when you only need to hit five strings (like you did with D maj. 7). I think it encourages bad technique. Nice work, though!
There are many variations to every chord. Just like some basic variations of e minor are 022000, X79987, XX2453, XX14121212, etc... BOTH those chords you mentioned are versions of Em7.
Your not missing anything bro lol. It's just a different position.
X79987 = Em
X79787 = Em7
022000 = Em
02203X = Em7
Note that the note that was changed in the first position (9 to 7th fret) is the same as adding the 3rd. They are both the 7th note in the E minor scale, that is why it makes it a 7th chord.
To understand it a little more, play the 7th Fret on the 3rd string, and then the 3rd fret on the 2nd string. Same note isn't it? :) Hope you get it.
022033 is playing it open, X79787 is the bar chord form of it. Pretty much any open string chord has a relative bar chord. For example 003330 (or X03330) and 577655 are both A major.
Perhaps you are lookingat a different fingering for a certain chord. A major 7th has a 1,3,5,7 and a 7th chord which is a dominant chord has a 1,3,5,b7 in it.
Great video it helped me practice barre chords, and just play some sweet chords that i didn't know before, other than the 4 "classic" barre shapes you see everywhere. This progression sounds really sweet, no matter what strum you use. Great lesson, not for the absolute beginner though ;)
I love jazz chords. Did you know that the same chords can have different names? For instance did you know that the C#m7b5 is the same as an A9th without the root A note or is also known as a half diminished chord - Fabulous!
I don't understand the C#m7b5 chord. In my chord books it is played different than what he is playing here. I looked it up online and found almost everyplace I go they show it being played different from Dave and my book, so what gives?
hey, there is not just one way to play a chord. As long as you got the same notes, although in different order, you are playing the same chord, voicing or inversion of that chord. What you'll have to look for in a chord is mainly the root, 3rd and 5th (and 7th)...
So, you could play your C#m7b5 (which by the way, is the 7th grade of D Major) as:
true, but for someone who hasn't had much if any jazz experience like most people wanting a youtube guitar lesson, its a pretty good place to start...
hey can you give more tips on how to do stuff to your guitar like that granite thing to stop the string from moving....you know...basic guitar maintenance thats easy to do

I was watching all thru this video, and I was hearing in my head the solo licks that can easily be played in between these chords, but I was hoping that by the end of the video, you would have done a demonstration with a once-thru playing single chords, then doing an improvised lead between the chord you just played to the next chord?
How about doing a short Part II to this video demonstrating that?
David, nice video with a very sweet sounding chord progression. I shall certainly be playing and developing it later. Good to see you back it has been a little while.

thank you so much nextlevelguitar!! this lesson helped me out a lot and i even made my own progression out of it by changing 1 chord, adding 1 chord, and changing the pattern.
needed chords:
Cmaj7 ( X57675 )
C#m7b5 ( X4545X )
Gmaj7 ( 3X443X )
Gmin7 ( 3X333X )
A7 ( 575655 )

Cmaj7 -> C#m7b5 -> Gmaj7 -> Gmin7 -> Cmaj7 -> C#m7b5 -> Gmin7 -> A7
