I really don't understand why people go out of their way to get Pro Tools. The features are intentionally cut down to encourage you to buy even more expensive add ons. Not to mention that (before PT9) you had to buy digidesign hardware to make it work. It's more cost effective to go with an interface of your choice and a DAW of your choice.
Where shall we put that patch bay - hey I know on the floor so I have to get right down there every time I want to patch something. While I'm down there I can screw with the tiny budget mixer that I'm prepared to use in my monitor signal path. Ain't it great when everything just falls into place.
why does he even have the mixer if he doesnt use it for mixing outside of the software? if he mixes in pro tools he can just monitor straight from the outputs on the 002. unless he uses it as an extra volume control that doesnt need to be there, correct?
Thats one thing i wonder myself? if you have software in your computer, it already has a mixer built in. Perhaps having the big board makes it look more "fancy"
@aricbrenner no ..he can have that set up with the monitors and some headphones so that way when he is recording he can have several channels and each one with its own volume knob.
@aricbrenner He said right in the video that he was only using it to monitor. Still pointless though. I'm pretty sure that Pro Tools could be used to monitor...
@aricbrenner he is using the mixer to route signals from pro tools along with any other sources to the monitors or headphones. This way he can listen to say a CD without having import it to protools.
@SirKilthelm you don't have to "import a cd to pro tools" to listen to it the same time as a pro tools session is running, so this argument doesn't help. i'm sure he has some excuse to have it there, but does it need to be? definitely not.
@kornykab the mixer still isn't necessary.. if that is his intention, there are better ways of going about it. not to mention there is headphone out with a separate gain control on the 002
patch bay to patch sounds? lol this guy doesn't know anything.... you just patch a signal... not sound until it comes out of your monitors... this guy needs to study a lil' bit of physics to know what sound is...
its kinda funny how the guy is having audio problems when he is suposed to be a profestional mixer lol and no its not just you i didnt understand a word he said
Ummm... Is it just me, or did he pretty much just tell us nothing. Like really he gave no tips or advice. He just said what a patch bay did. That's it.
HELP! Okay i'm thinking of recording the band i'm in at the moment, firstly to get our ideas saved, and also in the long run i think it's going to be useful to put together tracks using software like cubase. I will be getting a new pc tower soon, which will have 2 gb ram or higher. However i'm inexperienced and all this studio jargon about inferaces/outputs ect is confusing. What do i need to get started? I have watched this vid and it helped a bit but i am still lost. Thanks in advance.
1. Choose your software. If you have a PC then Cubase, Pro Tools LE or M-Audio or Propellorheads Record are all good options but will all cost you money.
2. Buy or Blag a Microphone set. If you have a selection of mics already then you are well on your way. I assume you already have a mixer of some description.
3. Get the best audio/midi interface you can afford which works well with your software choosen above and your microphones/mixer.
What do you know about sound mixing since you want to debate with me? Why don't you take a look at the rest of these videos and tell me if this is really an expert.
Ok you do have a point there, but if you wanted to do that why not just get an interface with the i/o's that you need? Also, he is using LE, which is going to introduceunacceptable latency anyway. You seem to have knowledge of what your talking about, I'm just not convinced that he does.
:/ You're not too convincing either. Virtual Patch bay in Pro Tools? Aux sends does not equate to patch bay. Unacceptable latency? You may consider upgrading or reconfigure your machine to optimal setting if you're experiencing unacceptable latency. LE works fine if you know what your doing. Sorry bro, homeboy conducting the vid knows a little more than you, regardless that he said "Digidesign made by Pro Tools.
So say I have 8 pieces of outboard and 4 spare out's on my interface. Should I crawl around behind my desk unplugging things? Patch bays are essential if you want to operate with even a hint of efficiency.
It's only amazing to you because you don't have a clue.
believe it or not. if your trying to start a studio and DAW rig, Look into M-Audio gear. They have really stepped there gear up. The profire 2626 has 8 octane pres that blow the digi 002 and 003 away sound quality wise. also the digi 002 only has 4 pres. Ive tested both and the profire 2626 gives you twice as much for half the price
Expert Village do some good videos, it's just it seems they're always in a hurry and have to rush through everything. I mean if they could make there videos longer, say 5 minutes and pack in maybe a little more information then I'm sure they would be much better.
does any1 have a good video showing an effective design for an analogue only patchbay, to include a mixer, multi effects staion, reverb device and keyboards etc??
any basic design would help, i just wanna do it right! :)
That is why you master a track before it goes to CD. Mastering is simply getting the most volume out of your track without clipping with the use of like frequency specific compression. Slight EQing n stuff like that. Oh and that dude in the back who thinks you can get just as good recordings out of a M-Audio interface than you can an SSL, you probably didn't listen to the engineers work and jus saw a huge console and ASSUMED HE WOULD BE GOOD! BOTTOM LINE AN SSL WOULD RAPE A M-AUDIO BOX!
expertvilage is really cool but there are tons of 1 1/2 minute videos all on the same topic which gets REALLY annoying. Put them into 2 big parts and/or put them as video responses so they are easy to find.
The studio is junk minus the UA pre. I'd take all the patchbay and cords you have and throw them away. Spend some money on your gear if you want to call it professional. I love it when people get an 02 and think they have a Professional studio.
our band paid almost a grand for a 4 song demo at a "pro" studio with a digi24 console...and i bought a m-audio project mix and got better results..i think people like you are just pissed that anyone with 3,000 bucks can crank out a top quality sound without having to pay for "pro" studio time..
3. you and your band mates were jackassing around pretending to be rock stars and wasting valuable time instead of working thus causing such a high cost for your four track demo
wroooong..we got screwed cuz we were paying to use really expensive equipment..what i'm saying is that someone in their basement (with skill) can make a better record than people who own SSL's or really expensive equipment..its all just in your head that your expensive equipment makes you better in any way..fuck high end studios..they are all going out of business anyway..and fuck you
if you say so dude. after youve done everything thats about what it costs. which is only because people charge to much for studio time which is why you always hear about musicians starting studios at home. studios buy 12 grand gear thats obsolete after a few years and keep charging people to use it. i was in a studio that charged about that and they were still using adat. you shouldnt mouth off like that not every town has good studios in it.
"studios buy 12 grand gear" a SINGLE channel from SSL costs at least $2,000. imagine what one of those 64 channel consoles cost. and if it came down to recording through a brand new Behringer or a 10 year old SSL console, i'd choose the ten year old SSL in a heart beat. however, home recording is a lot better these days. like the single SSL channel rack or maybe even an M-Audio setup. whatever. my point is, if you waste time in a studio, they're going to rape you.
Also the biggest problem with studios being overpriced is trends. Dats in, they go all dat. nope nobody wants dat anymore go all hard drive nope it doesnt sound real enough people want analog ok...wait isnt this where we were two decades ago?!@ thus why its so overpriced and also why its better to just build your own. also you risk 7 years down the line you having your masters on dat and now you will have to go pay someone tons of bucks to transfer that dat to whatever.
This is tight! I got a question for you. Do you notice that no matter how hard you try to amplify your mixdown it could never be as loud on cd as the original cd. Do you know what software for technique I can use to make my mixdowns as loud as the original cds out there in the market. Everytime I hit up more than .05 db my audio track distorts but even then it is not as loud as the original. Why is that? I tried Hard limiting, Normalizing pretty much everything.
Yeah..I there really not worth the Hype...I almost bought a lynx22...But did had a limited budget....I settled for a lynx2-C model..I have a couple of quick studio videos that I just threw up on youtube..The songs werent done in my studio..Given that converting to you tube takes away some quality..The songs were done by a friend using some really bottom dollar equip..A $60 mic and beat up guitar interface..I was shocked, considering what I have spent.
