I can't say for other versions, but I'd have to say his cover is the only one that even attempts to mimic the original...If you listen to the Richard Berry "original," you'll hear it is just as funky as Barry's...
Same here bud (in fact, Soul Train was the only place I remember hearing the song). Once they played this during the Soul Train Line and that Asian female (Cheryl Song) came down the line with a python.
