thats wrong that they abandoned the birth place of their sport. who cares if it wasn't as big nascar should have spent the money and run the race for nostoulga purposes.
I always like going to short track races more then a superspeedway. Much more intimate feel. I drove to see a race at North Wilkesboro in October. Was worth the 12 hour drive. Great track. This track may never see NASCAR races but I am glad to see it host some racing again,
It was the most fitting ending for the Cup cars there, Jeff Gordon winning the race and Dale Earnhardt finishing second. Both of those drivers embodied the sport and gave the sport a face that America could recognize. And the track embodied how a race car driver drove, with the sense of courage as you tackled one of the most historic short tracks in Auto Racing history. Its a shame the cup cars dont run there. But the cars got bigger and the sports ego grew. N.W. was built for racing not egos!
The driver's tracks such as North Wilkesboro Speedway and Rockingham Speedway are no longer on the NASCAR schedule. What a shame....the tracks that do not draw fans very well anymore should be left off the schedule and these 2 tracks should be added to the schedule once more. NASCAR would return to its roots if this were to happen.
I agree with everyone talking up North Wilkesboro. Although I wasn't a NASCAR fan yet at this time, I've watched old races at this track and there was a lot of good racing.
I heard the track has been reopened. I wonder what would need to be done to get Sprint Cup cars racing on it with the CoT. I'd love to see NASCAR come back to racing at this track!
@Bluestorm5 Really? Cool! And scratch the CoT I mentioned in my previous post, as NASCAR reverted back to its previous car. I know chances are extremely slim of getting Cup racing back there, but there will be a few minor series events outside of NASCAR there, and that's a good start.
I was a Dale Earnhardt fan until 2001 now i am a Jimmie Johnson fan. I cant wait until the day they open it up for races again. North Wilkesboro was way better than Texas. Now i have to go to Martinsville, Bristol, or Charolette to see a race. I live it Wilkesboro so i would just rather just drive 20 minutes to a race rather than 3 or 4 hours. *** I think if they ever restore this for sprint cup then they should get rid of 1 race a Poccono, there is no passing and just boring.
I hope Texas gets torn down by a tornado. And I hope California gets burned down by a fire. Those two tracks are the reason Rockingham and Wilkesboro are gone.
If you love North Wilkesboro -- you'll be glad to know they are reopening Saturday afternoon! BRING BACK REAL RACING!
Don't get rid of just california, get rid of kansas, chicago, texas, las vegas, and Lowe's. They all are the same, boring boring race track. This race was exciting. The most exciting i have seen in years
All the tracks you named are some of the most exciting tracks on the circuit. Lowes is very historic and puts on incredible racing. Same with Texas and Vegas. And Chicago used to be boring but they've had great races there the last two years.
I only started watching NASCAR in about late 1997 and I never got to watch a race from Wilksboro....but from the clips Ive seen on Youtube.....its a helluva lot better than Texas.....dont get me wrong I like Texas but Id prefer N. Wilksboro
It would be safe I think to add Bruton Smith with names like Tony George and Brian France as men who are ruining or ruined their forms of racing Its why Im becoming more of a fan of NHRA and following it alot more closely now. Its alot more fan friendly
Just last year me and my grandpa made our way up there to see the track were so many memories are kept. The saddest thing I think I have ever seen is a tear roll down my grandpa's cheek as we walked in and seen the track. Of course it made me cry to sit in the seat I sat in back in 96' were I was 7 years old at the time. Me and my grandpa walked to our seats and sat for 2 hours just talking about memories and do you remember's. Some tears were shed and laughs were shared. It still makes memories
I was 7 years old at the time of this race and I sat in the brand new stands over in turn 1. It chokes me up to see the last race here but I really appreciate this race being put on here man it means alot to me. North Wilkesboro will always be one of my favorite racetracks of all time. Someone should give the place a facelift I've been to the track recently and it kills me to see what shape its in now. I love this place and I'll be up to look back at the memories again soon. Thanks again!!
Seeing this almost brings a man to tears. Seeing any short track go by the way side has that effect. And why, because big business marketing wants cup racing on these crappy "cookie-cutter" mile and a halfs.
I remember seeing this race..... I cried when they came to this.

Short track racing is the best. NASCAR needs to bring rockingham and north wilksboro back and lose some of those intermediate track dates.

I can never watch this part of the race...that last lap you can just feel the beginning of the end.
However, tomorrow is a new day and the track reopens with a Super Late Model 200 lap event. Hopefully some of you will make it there.

I would love to see racing come back to North Wilkesboro and Rockingham. Lose a date for California and Pocono and restore NW and the Rock.

I would rather cancel Merlefest, if they would bring the racetrack back

John Kernan knew what NASCAR would become. Very ironic comments by him.
We need him back!

You said it right.
I just don't know who to blame for this crime.

Bruton Smith is who to blame.
Its sad that on that day, the track is EXACTLY what it looks like now...Nothing changed..even the Tyson Holly Farms signs are still at the track..
franticfury 3 years ago 9
yeah i saw that everything is exactly the same, kinda sad actualy. maybe he should go there some day and see what nascar fans really want and need.
