I would test a spot with paint thinner, if the primer came up easily I'd remove it and start with raw plastic. If the primer was good, I'd just sand it with 600, base and clear.
I'm liking your movies a lot. I've always used wax and grease remover and figured that the static electricity was just from sanding the plastic. SO, if this is actually caused by me using that material, then I will be amazed. I've been adding Stat-Free to eliminate the the static elc. but can still feel it a bit... Thanks, I'll try it.:-)
thats strange, i used to use soap and water initially but then i would get these bubbles like my paint was oil. ended up switching to simple green for my intitial cleaning and post sanding with water.
I've actually never used soap and water just sanding paste. I have found that if you let it air dry after getting wet and the plastic waterspots that it shows threw (more on light metallics), so always dry them right away...maybe your was just a particular type of soap?
@jimmo4life distinct posibility. im in the philippines and the products here are fairly cheap. paint is hard to find quality equipment and tools here. still struggling with getting a glass smooth finish on my top coat. i paint scooters and motorcycles here and while i am unhappy with my results its still way better then any of the local stuff. so watching and learning! great vid btw
@jimmo4life *Nods*. Some soaps leave a layer so make the next cleaning job easier or create extra shine. Specially floor cleaners have this. Most dish washing soaps don't. But the last rub with alcohol base cleaner should remove any residue.
@jimmo4life I have a plastic chromed grille, and I want to change it to match the color of my car(black)and I was wondering what you think the best prep steps are?I want to get a shine like that in the video.Would these same steps apply to my grille?Your response will be much appreciated.
awesome job and video... at the end with the still images of the finishes I realized my monitor needs cleaning haha

Hi, is that a 3M Accuspray spray gun you use for base coat ? Does it work fine ?
I have one to, but i only use it for primer, as the tip is 1.8 mm, and i was thinking it was to big for base coat..

Nice vid. Suppose you were painting plastic pieces that come primered from the factory. What if anything would you do differently? Thanks in advance!
