Mahalia Jackson is a prime example of the voice being a highly tuned instrument for the conveyance of emotion. She could easily ruin the song by vocal gymnastics like today's singers but instead of showing of like a two bit hooker she hits you good and hard with her soul and spirit.
Notice the legendary Mahalia' Jackson's inflections. I believe this is the style of singing that the great Elvis Presley modeled his singing after. I could here it in his voice-especially when he sang gospels. He used it and crafted it into his own style that separated himself from his contemparies, and anyone since.
This was the last era that giants walked the earth. This is what it seems to me. I loved Elvis so long ago, those early, pure years.... Nat King Cole - such smooth, effortless swing, perfection intonation, relaxed, honey-pure phrasing. Mahailia sounds so good here! I tear nearly just fell, couldn't help it!
Ha ha! Fantastic. Nat Cole was a seriously funny guy, who could make fun with the best of them. How ironic that a black man was making a parody of a white man, making a parody of a white man. Did you also notice how Elvis sang it with black attitude and Nat sang that version well phrased (as a white vocalist woud have done it) alomost in a BBC voice. Fantastic Mikey xx
Hah! I thought "Nat King Cole Won't Rock n' Roll!" LOL! Well, money talks. "Send For Me" anyone?

I found the transition between the dance styles hilarious as it moved from jail house rock to the spiritual LOL

Wow that's neat-Nat King Cole was known for avoiding rock and roll. Maybe it was that he wouldn't record it.
